Come along to our ‘Weekend of Self-Sufficiency’ course at Swn-Y-Coed: https://www.swnycoed.org/courses-events/a-weekend-of-self-sufficiency

Thanks to Peni Ediker for sharing the way she has been starting seeds for decades! This is perfect for saving time, money, and space! I can attest this works well having known Peni for the last 3 years, visiting her inspiring garden regularly.

  1. A lady after my own heart! There is only one left in my family – me. I cannot eat so much, so huge harvests are not important. I like variety, though. I have limited space. I do exactly the same as the lady does but use vermiculite over the seeds which marks the rows and the vermiculite holds moisture (the light vermiculite also appeals to my artistic eye). Also, I use a spray bottle with water to water them when I have run out of trays to feed water into, having to juggle space a bit. Then I then cover with the clear lid. I also separate and replant them in larger pots when they are still very small which everyone warns against but works really well for me.

  2. Wondering what happens if one variety germinated and needs potting on before another? Will you not disturb the smaller ones when you prick out the bigger ones?

  3. Why do people overcomplicate sowing? Fine, expensive potting mix is absolutely not necessary, and watering with a rose is completely fine (how did nature ever manage with rain?)

  4. What a beautiful set up. Glad it's appreciated by people that know what that set up means. The city has just come to tell me to essentially dismantle my set up and permaculture garden. Sad state of events when my neighbours still use glyphosate, fertilizer and pesticides. In my garden I have loads of pollinators, in theirs, green grass …yet they care about the environment because they have the stickers to prove it. 😢

  5. I have had quite a time trying to propagate poppy seeds this year. It was my first time and so far I have practically two failures in a row. My first batch has about a dozen out of 72 seedlings. They are barely hanging on and only about an inch tall at the most. I did another wide open tray of scattered seeds and I think they all got cooked by my heating mats. Definitely learning a lot about poppy seeds.
