Big Changes in the Garden – Redesign, No More Lawn, Container Time, and Cool Plants

Big Changes in the Garden – Redesign, No More Lawn, Container Time, and Cool Plants – In this video we go over some changes that were made in the front garden. There is no more turf in the Raleigh, NC garden and I’m happy to never mow again. Also, we pot up shrubs into our containers and show off some cool plants around Raleigh.

  1. Look at me naming plants in Jim and Steph's garden… all of which I learned from watching this channel. Such a pleasure to watch and learn 😃.

  2. Jim, I LOVE ,the Shasta Viburnum. I had one that was fully mature but taken out for a garage build. It was gorgeous!
I'm planning on putting a new one in. They are gorgeous shrubs in full maturely unpruned. Still gorgeous in your garden!!
Thanks for all of your expertise !!

  3. Fairly new here to this channel and I love it! So much great info and inspiration! I now realize it’s okay to have one of whatever I like in my garden in Columbia, SC. Not a lot of repeats in our space 😊.

  4. Watching these "mixed and/or odd jobs" videos is like what I call puttering in the garden. I love to putter in my garden and I'm thoroughly enjoying watching you putter in yours.

  5. i have an american fringe tree & i love the smell of the flowers! I cant wait for mine to bloom this year

  6. Hi Jim and Stephanie! Another great video! I love all the new paths and beds etc. And your house looks fantastic! You teach me something new with every video! Thank you!

  7. I purchased my viburnum plicatum in a 4 inch pot years ago – she's now probably four feet tall and six feet wide and in glorious bloom. It probably took 3 years to do that! Mine is in a spot where it will never have to be pruned, and her natural form is exactly what I want, so if folks have the space, I highly recommend it. Mine is also in soil that is damp almost all year.

Great work, Jim! I would love to have no lawn, but it's going to take a long, long time to get there.

  8. I have a fringe tree in my backyard. I’ve had it for 18 years and the most beautiful and fragrant tree. I wrap the branches with small white Christmas lights for nighttime ambiance. It’s really beautiful when the fringes are blooming. Thank you for all your garden knowledge.

  9. Back in the Fall, when Steph planted the plants in the ground from the ceramic pots did she cut the roots back? How often do you guys cut the roots back when putting plants in a pot?

  10. Hi Jim (and Pam?),
Glad you got rid of that small piece of turf.
It didn't really have a purpose other than having room to plant annuals in a circle, but now you can plant out some nice perenials and make a great looking garden.
The viburnum is a stunner along with your fragrant and colourful hawthorne.
I'm doing a similar thing by cutting the undergrowth off shrubs and planting lower perenials underneath…….by following your steps.
Love the idea of having mainly annuals with your veges.
I think it makes more sense than sporadically mixing them in gaps….unless they complement the plant its near to.
The drone gives us a great view of your alterations.
Looking so good. Love the pots too and better draining soil mix. Joanna New Zealand 😊

  11. I truly enjoyed this video! You have inspired me to possibly eliminate our turf. Psssss…don't tell my husband!

  12. The fringe trees on main campus in front of Ricks Hall are amazingly full and in their prime right now. A fabulous example close by.
