Tips For Planting Onions Sets – Vegetable Gardening For Beginners At Home

Today we share tips for planting onions sets in this vegetable gardening for beginners at home video. We grow onions from sets every year as they are easy to grow and we use them in our home kitchen. We grow onions from sets as we find they grow best for us so we don’t sow onion seeds. We plant our onion sets direct into the ground as we find they start very well and we have a near 100% success rate sowing them this way. You can always start your of in modules particularly if you want to start them early or if you have late frosts where you live.

We are planting Centurion onion bulbs this morning. We will also be planting Red Baron in a couple of weeks. We plant the sets just below the soil surface and cover them with netting. We find that the birds will pull them our of the ground when looking for food if we don’t cover them. We try to set the bulbs about 4 inches apart and leave about 12 inches or 30 cm between rows. It is important to space out the onion sets as this allows us to weed between the rows with a hoe in the summer. It is easy to damage the onion sets when weeding if they are too close together.

We will harvest the onions in the summer so they will only be in the ground a few weeks. Onions are normally ready to harvest in July.

  1. Nice video for beginners. I live in a different region but a similar climate as you. I work at a store that sells onion bulbs like these (plus the green transplants), and I'll try to direct new gardeners to your video. Seeing someone do something is so much better than reading how to do something.

  2. I didn’t do well with onion sets last year, but my seeds are coming in well this year.
What would be really helpful is to know how many of each vegetable to grow. I’ve sown 60 cabbage which is a bit excessive as I live alone! I am expecting failures so I know I won’t get as many, some may not germinate or some get pest attacks etc x
