  1. 😂 I work in a retail chain that sells MG soils and try to educate customers, but they SO don’t want to hear my words. I don’t like moisture control soil. My one time using it in pots grew mold/moss on top rather than healthy plants. Thank you for showing people the truth!!!

  2. Luke,
I built my 1st raised bed last year. Filled it w/ roughly 80% top soil (researched 1st to find a decent one), 5% perlite/pinebark fines for drainage, 15% coir/peat for moisture retention, plus Biotone to organically fertilize & inoculate it w/ microrhizae. Much less expensive that raised bed mix. Worked like a charm. 😊

  3. Many people do not know that many mfgs buy their compost from other vendors and they add their own propietary ingredients to the mix, for example, they may buy compost from a local source and then spread it out and spray urea on it and then bag it up in their own bags with their own marketing labels that can razzel and dazzel consumers with marketing statements. I personally buy my own bulk compost and add various ingredients pretty like most soil mfgs do. It's basically adding percentage of this and that.🤭

  4. In theory, raised bed mix should be richer with compost since drainage isn't much an issue, but it's usually the same as garden soil or potting soil.

  5. I buy fox farms, miracle grow, and generic local topsoil with rocks and mulch included, then i spend some time stabbing it and pulling the rocks out to put in the bottom of my pots. Then I amend perlite, vermiculite, and/or sand into it to get the right consistency. All this stirring breaks up a lot of the mulched wood, but i pull out the big chunks. I'll have to make myself a sifter, that's a good idea! I Recycle all my old soil into the mix too. There's enough compost in there plus bean roots to sustain high nutrients for my plants.

  6. some of these mixes probably also claim to have "added fertilizer", maybe not as compost or solid soil components but like added chemical fertilizer added as they mix it up. like dumping liquid fertilizer in

  7. Thank god I watched this video before buying raised bed mix because I'm about to fill 2 8x4x1.5 garden beds. Saved me a lot of money!! Thank you!

  8. I wouldn’t use any thing that isn’t organic. Luke that bag of orchid mix retails for 5.99. Not worth that price either.

  9. They’re adding so much wood to these bags of “soil” I just get my soil in bulk locally and I make my own seed starter using a whole 8lb cube of coco coir and a bag of perlite. I have started close to 800 starts with $20 worth of just coco coir and perlite. I feed when I water. One of those bags is $9-10 where I am

  10. Thank you I appreciate the video ❤ It’s like when they put a gluten free label on orange juice 😂 What about fertilizer? Are there ways to save there too?

  11. Once, one of my coworkers said to me, "You cute when you angry!" The same could be said of you. 😆

I'm off to share the video; it's a good one. 😅

  12. Raised bed mix is like 70% wood chips some soil /perlite and a dash of fertilizer . They write all the fancy names on them and ppl who aren’t familiar buy them and they don’t work

  13. Great info. And to think that I just made a sifter last week. I even use it for my compost if it's not quite ready.

  14. I'm a smart person… but have I fallen for purchasing the expensive bags? Yes….. yes I have😢. Next trip to the garden center, I'll have a smug look while picking up the cheaper bag 🥴! Thanks for the vid!

  15. I was just on a cattle farm and my buddy said NEVER purchase manure from one any more as they are now treating pastures with herbicides which will kill vegetables … never heard that before.

  16. Very interesting video.
Regarding the sand, which you say could be added to sifted grow mix, there are approximately 20 different kinds of sand found in different places and with different sizes of granules. It’s not quite as simple as just saying “Add some sand and you will have cactus mix”.🤷‍♂️
