  2. Brilliant planting strategy and use of space!
And huge thanks for acknowledging the outrageous pricing on the beds being promoted on other gardening channels. Thank you for the link.

  3. The tree roots will get into the garden beds in about two years. I learned it the hard way. It's a lot of work to clean out the roots, at least twice a year.

  4. The irony for me: since I bought my last big batch of lumber during COVID lockdown I paid more for my most recent raised beds than these metal bed kits.

  5. If that 3ft wide bed is as light as you show, then I am sure it will be bowing out from the weight of soil. The "better" ones have cross bracing to prevent that, I would suggest using some wire or timber across that bed to maintain the shape.

  6. Once again I shout THANK YOU. You are one helpful gardener. The effort you put into your own gardening and are willing to share the good and the mistakes is so appreciated. I followed much of your plan last year to get started and had wonderful results. I just installed a retractable hoop house. And have plans on the shade high tunnel, too. On a budget…and your plans are budget friendly. I just ordered two of these raised beds to give them a try. Thank so much❤

  7. Hi, I love your channel. How can I keep my cover in the raised garden bed when windy? The wind is taking my cover with clamps included

  8. Great video! It is actually very timely. WARNING – I have a raised bed setup in similar spot and when I was getting them ready yesterday,
I found that the tree roots grew upwards into the bed from down and it was like a web of roots when I dug up the bed :D. Closest tree is at least 8-9 feet away but she probably loved all the nutrients in the bed.

  9. I just bought 2 of these style in 6'x3' back in Feb of this year. Got one of them planted already and about to start the next one this week. Mine had two inside rods that connect both sides to keep them from bowing out over time

  10. This video was so informative! Thanks so much! I’ll keep this in mind for when I eventually get a house. If you’re looking for video ideas, I’d love to see some recipe videos showing what you cook with your produce, maybe on your second channel if you didn’t want to put it here. I have two community garden plots this season and am wondering what to do with all the veggies 🤣

  11. Seems like an awesome idea! Do you think tree root might migrate into the bottoms of the raised beds? I'm sure you will find out

  12. I use pressure treated wood and set 1 rectangle of 2x6s on top of another after treating the insides and bottoms of each with preservative. The top is drilled and toe-nailed into the bottom one. The bottom one has stainless screws partially drilled into the bottom with the heads sitting on pavers flush with the 4 corners (to make mowing easier). I also used plastic edging nailed to the inside to keep the material from coming out the 1-inch air gap at the bottom, after which we lined the entire inside with heavy duty aluminum foil but with 1" excess sticking above the top edge. Filling with compost or other material holds the foil in place. When done, I cut the 4 corners of excess foil, folded flush with the top and caulked all around. This is the best raised bed solution. Cost is about $50 and life expectancy is about 50 years. One thing caught my ear: the black plastic preventing pests/disease. We have a sick juvenile fig tree and have been looking for empirical data on this. After removing diseased (I'm guessing fungus) foliage and spraying with copper, we will put down the plastic.

  13. Our Texas Gulf Coast "soil" is clay/gumbo. In the dry summers it turns into concrete. I've tried amending the soil to no avail. Finally I bought 2 of the 4' x 4' 18' tall metal raised beds from Amazon. The fact that I could fill it with quality soil made it the ideal solution! I filled the bottom 8-10" with sticks, leaves, etc that would eventually break down to feed the soil even more. I had so much success with the 2 beds that I bought 2 more for this growing season. Filling them can be pricey, but it is an investment that will pay off with delicious tomatoes, peppers, squash, etc. Love that you pass on such great gardening advice!

  14. That is heat. Just know that tree roots go toward the food and water. That means they will eventually grow up into the raised beds if you don’t put a barrier under the raised bed

  15. Love the idea, I just bought one last year, and I gonna add one again this year. And this is work really great for a really small garden like I have. Hi Dale!❤

  16. I have put a raised bed under a juvenile oak tree to grow tomatoes and noticed lots of other roots coming from underneath and taking over that whole bed. I assumed it was from the oak tree (only one around). I’d love to know how “hungry for good soil” will your fruit trees nearby be and if they’ll try to steal nutrients from the raised bed. Keep us posted ❤

  17. You absolutely have the best garden channel I’ve ever come across. Thank you so much for all your garden tips and ideas. Newbie Container gardener from S/W Missouri 👍🏼 Dale is a beautiful dog.

  18. bought these metal raised beds this year … very similar except mine have a support bar across the middle. From reviews I've read of others that do not have the support bar, they do have issues with the sides bulging out from the weight of the soil. Love mine so far. Thanks for your informative videos

  19. Hi! Thanks so much for your informative videos! I have two 4’x8’ vego beds and they supply two metal rods to attach the two longer sides together so it doesn’t bow out when filled with soil. I wonder if your bigger raised bed might benefit a rod or two as well. Perhaps you already have one but I couldn’t see it in this video. Happy gardening!

  20. I wonder what the tree roots will do over time? Will they invade the new growing medium sitting on top of the ground as the years go by.

  21. Question. I have a santa rosa plum that had flowers from the store still in the pot. This is its 2nd year in my yard, and it didn't flower. Why? How could it have flowers last year that I plucked off because it was the first year here & wanted more root production instead of flowering BUT now this year, I have no flowers. Weird. I thought it would flower more this year, but nope. Kinda sad. I definitely thought we'd get plums this year. Nope. The leaves are out now but no flowers. Disappointing. My peach tree that I just bought this year has flowers already.

  22. i am going into my 3 year of using 6 of the Vego steel raised beds. I picked them all up on huge black friday discounts off Amazon. I am in Maryland, and they work fantastic and honestly, still look new. I have the 17inch tall ones, and honestly, with the price of lumber and treating the lumber with tung oil to prevent rot, these are cheaper.
