@THERUSTEDGARDEN
Can you overseed basil and split up? What about tomatoes?? Saves space when I can load up individual cells. What vegetable can I overseed and split up when I up pot? Thanks a bunch
I may consider doing this next year. The reason I can't do it this year, despite having an abundance of excess plants, is because I didn't label my pepper plants! I have no idea what is what with those, so I can't sell like that.
Lots of good information, thanks!
Gary, where did you locate your greenhouse. I am looking into getting one now. Looking for about a 10 by 12. Any suggestions. I am trying not to make a boobo.
great idea! I use to sell at a big market here in TN for 4 years and plants go like crazy..those who sold plants sold out early every day!
Always have lots of one, five and 10 dollar bills ready for change!
Great
I’m also a big fan of Agrothrive. I use it on all my seedlings and they are very healthy. Great idea of having a plant yard sale. I always have too many plants but end up giving them to friends and neighbors. 😊
Thanks
Wouldn't you make more money just selling the produce ready to eat/use and save the money and time you spend nursing starts along and up potting them and all the work and expense that goes into that? For example. You could probably gross the same amount of money from selling one large tomato from one plant that might grow 10 others than you would selling one tomato seedling. You'd have to grow and nurture 10 tomato seedlings to sell just to equal the revenue you'd get from the tomatoes you'd sell from one plant. isn't this more or less true or am I missing something?
I did a tomato plant sale fundraiser for my church and raised almost $300 on about 50 plants.
Thanks to you. I have at least 600 seedlings going to sell. I can't wait
Did you sell a lot last year at $3 per small pot? That's £2.37 and seems a bit expensive for UK driveway sales. Are plants really that expensive in the US garden centres?
For those small pots the mint was in, even if full of growth, £1.50 – £2 seems like a fair deal. The customers don't seem to care about the costs involved in getting the plants to that stage. When you actually go to garden centres the soil the plants come in is pretty poor.
I want to do the same here. When i went to the garden centre last year small tomato plants were £3.50 and the larger ones that were about 2ft were £6.50.
My friend said that trying to sell the 2ft plants at the school fair for £3 was too expensive and i should list them as £1 but insisted at £1.50 at least, with all of the profit going to the school charity. Was she being a bit tight or was not understanding about organic plants? Was i also in the wrong for saying £3 per 2ft ready to plant tomatoes?
I had previously always gave them some of my spares and never treated them different to my own plants and had great success. Her husband wants to get allotment too, although she doesn't seem into it as much as he is. All the plants had decent compost, perlite, vermiculate, had blood, fish and bone meal and were given a liquid feed.
Like i said i used to give away plants to my friends and neighbours but asked for the pots back when they transplanted as i am currently out of work due to illness and can't afford to keep buying pots for them to just put them in the rubbish. She might have just been peed off with me last year as i put them in recycled containers in stead of plant pots as funnily enough, i ran out of pots!
I have made sure not to create as many spares as i used to but would do more if i thought i could sell them and give a % of the profit to the school charity. Am i being too outrageous to want to sell them? If there were low quality then i would get that. The free plants that i gave away to friends and neighbours were in decent hard wearing pots that i asked to be returned as i knew that they are too small to grow in full term.
If i were to sell them to make a profit i would buy some proper pots but cheap in bulk. I just want to make sure that i am not being paranoid about pricing and that i am not being unrealistic, if you know what i mean?
I was also thinking about subscriptions, where if they wanted i could sow ready the next round of plantings, like cool weather, spring crops, and summer, autumn and winter crops, like you would for yourself but a bit extra. A bit like a CSA, where you pay a fixed price but slightly cheaper and you get a set of plants ready to plant out for the time of year and location? Would be great for people who didn't have time or space to do that. What do you think?
Thank Gary!
Do you need a greenhouse license to sell plants?
Hi Gary how are you doing today iam doing fine today thank you for the information stay safe 😂😊😮
What zone are you in? Wondering if i could do this in an unheated greenhouse in zone 6b.
I have a love of gardening and am without a job right now. I started 1200 seeds back in February and the plants are doing amazing! I can't wait for my first sale.
Hey Gary – Do you need any permits to sell plants?
