  1. Great video! A great resource to go back to time and time again! I'm looking forward to seeing a series of these 'masterclass' videos 😀

  2. I made my own carrot and radish seed tapes this year. It’s not hard and they are already spaced. I love watching your videos!! Thank you for your work! ⭐️⭐️⭐️🌻🍠🥔🌽🫚🧅🧄🍅🫛

  3. The purple ones as I'm sure you know already, were the original colour but the orange ones were developed for the Dutch House of Orange and have been that way ever since until recently.

  4. You deserve an Oscar for this epic roots video! Love your dialogue and record of growing the different styles of carrots.

  5. Help for herbs: I just killed three more marjoram plants. My yard/garden is sand, and I can't figure out if I am killing the plants, about 20 over the past two years, by watering too little or too much. Any ideas?

  6. I wonder if you have experienced this; it seems that orange carrots will fight against other color and variety
survival. When I attempt to grow other variety like purple dragon for example with classic (orange roots) the purple do not do well. I've tried this with other variety and color with the same outcome. I have to grow them in another patch all to themselves in order for them to do well.

  7. Lol just been chatting to my mate about carrots. We talked about this video! We're both on our second year as allotmenteers!! You've been an enormous help, so thanks so much! Here's a funny for you……. we had little success with carrots and my friend said his intercropped ones were tiny. I said it's not a waste tho, pop them in a salad, that's what Ben would do!! He replied "Ben would put his finger in a salad if he accidentally chopped it off!!" My vote was for the compost heap!! Its all just carbon right? Eventually! Lol x

  8. Thank you for another masterclass. You are so thorough, and I appreciate all the information.
Especially all the varieties for different soil types. 👍

  9. I saw your book at my local library in Maryland! They had it on display with other garden books. I was like "I know him!" Well, I watch your videos. 😂 Thanks for all the helpful info!

  10. When I was a kid we would gather wild carrots from the ditches. I am going to try and grow my own for the first time since I don’t even live in that state anymore.

  11. rather than a very narrow row of carrots, nowadays i sow a row about foot or so wide. maximizes crop for space used, and carrots keep for ages in ground, to be picked at intervals.

dont sow too wide, or they become too difficult to pick, with their tops getting tangled easily.

i just tamp down the sown seed with back of rake, rather than bothering to cover, and water daily. i dont need/do thinning.

  12. I love the garden planner. I've been gardening for over 35 years and have tried several programs like this, but none of them come close it. I also like the way Ben presents his topic.

  13. I seed my carrots using an old spice jar with the appropriate size sprinkle cap. I also do radishes and other small seeds this way.

  14. I cut the top of a purple carrot, put it in water and when it rooted planted it and then harvested the seeds. Growing a crop now.

  15. I saw on utube an interesting tip i plan to try. Take a paper plate punched out with seed sized holes and a solid "parking lot" section. Place handful of seeds and swipe them across the holes. Park the seeds remaining on the blank space, move plate, repeat. Sounds like it might work for all seeds. Just make a custom spaced plate for each seed type. Write on it what it is and reuse next time.

  16. Hands down the best master tip for carrots that I don’t see here: wait for cold weather to harvest. Turns delicious and fresh into ‘best carrot I’ve ever tasted’. Big sugar boost after frosts.
    Great video!😊

  17. Hi, Ben! I live in the Pacific NW of America where it's cool and rainy most of the year. I'm planning on growing a few vegetables this spring in a standing garden bed. You said that carrot flies are low-flying- is planting carrots in an elevated garden bed a viable option? Thanks, I love the channel!

  18. Saw a video where the carrots were planted in a paper egg carton with the bottom cut out indoors and then buried in the garden. The egg carton rotted away and the carrots looked good.

  19. I planted my carrots and the seeds had just started. The rain came and washed them away. I’m going to try your tissue tube.

  20. I love your videos, they’ve helped my veg growing no end. I found the background music very distracting in this one, I think it’s a new thing you’ve introduced? I’d rather just hear the sounds of nature while you’re talking.

  21. Get a plastic shopping basket with a few used silicone applicator heads to prevent knots on your line. Use a bungy cord to attach it around your waist.

  22. Thanks for that Ben. I've just emptied a pot I had some growing in last year and they were quite small but beautifully formed. I didn't know I could have left them to get bigger this year. I thought after one year that was it. Lesson learnt! 😜

  23. Great video. Thanks. I absolutely love garden grown fresh carrots and take them regularly to work in my lunch. There is no comparison to store-bought carrots. Lots of really good tips here and I always look forward to your videos. You make great videos. Thanks again.

  24. I love these videos and info you give us. As spring maybe coming I have a bit of a dilemma I don't have a garden but a small balcony and at the side of my flat I have built a raised bed and put a cloche on that's 2 foot high my raised bed is a foot high I have 2 tomato plants sungold 1 moneymaker and another I can't remember the name until I get home from work. I also have a strawberry plant which I have put in a bucket can someone please give me some suggestions where to put these as they all like sun my balcony unless I place buckets and boxes on top of the frame. I have onions, carrots and parsnips ohh forgot to mention sprouts they've germinated.

    Thank you

  25. Nantes half core and coreless are my absolute favorite carrots of all time, crisp, sweet and amazing carrot flavour!.

P.S. This really is the best garden show on all of youtube, I've been gardening for decades and I always learn something new here, plus, I can tell that you love gardening too by your ever present smile, I call it "the gardener's grin". Happy gardening to all!.

  26. Hey There. I've noticed that my glass greenhouse can tend to burn my early starts if there is too much sun. I put up some polycarbonate under a section and it spreads and softens the light better. I'm wondering if the green algae on your glass is accomplishing that for you? It seems like maybe you're not cleaning the glass on purpose.

  27. A tip I learned is to presprout the seeds in water, takes about 4 days. Then make a corn starch water mix like a paste and add the sprouted carrot seed. Then place that mixture into a plastic bag and cut the corner off like a icing spout and squeeze the mix into your furrow. This helps space out the seed evenly and keep it moist. The seed will sprout in a couple days and be very high success rate.

  28. Great video, thank you 👍 I tried ‘Amsterdam forcing 3’ carrots last year, maybe I left them too long, or they didn’t like mushroom compost, they came out so woody I gave them to my friends as dibbers 😂
I’ve just spilt the old packet all over the living room rug, I’ll just have to flap it inside and see what happens!

  29. Can make your own seed tapes with toilet paper … I watched a man on YT doing it
I'm starting carrots in a grow tent in egg cartons … I'll plant the whole carton when it's warm enough and they're big enough. It's tedious to plant but I sprouted them first. There won't be thinning to do, the carrots are evenly spaced and the carton suppresses any weeds. This is the first time trying it but looks promising!
Thank you for the carrot growing masterclass!!!
