Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Loved the video Jess I love coffee I definitely will have to try your coffee , and my garden is going great I've already have tomatoes onions and potatoes and beans coming up In my garden.

  2. P.S. Jess… that's beyond amazing your kids could pick up the milking task when you are unwell. I'd encourage that to the fullest. After all, it's their future too if they so choose! I'd love to have you as a friend/neighbor here in Irving TX. There's nothing better than goat's milk with the high fat content which is the best for our health. Hopefully our next President will correct the food pyramid and give the land back to the organic farmers and purify our meat sources as it once was. I pray for it daily.

  3. Have you heard or tried making zucchini flour or flour made from other vegetables like yams? I just learned about it as a good way to use up extra large zucchini.

  4. My Tom Turkey is the sheriff of the farm! If my roosters fight or get to hard on a hen, he breaks it up. Love how the berry area is coming together.

  5. Good video Ma'am! And so true about the weather forecasting of old vs current weather technology – such as the old wives tale for up here that says "whatever the weather is on Good Friday, it shall be for the next 40 days"….so it shall be unsettled based on Fridays weather. The hoar frost predictions is another good one and if march comes in like a lion, it shall go out like a lamb – both of these work for up here. I do wonder if they work elsewhere.

  6. I'm in zone 8A and have been checking the 10-day forecast daily, too! Thursday-Saturday lows in the 30s 😬 I'm so ready to plant my starts!

  7. Ordered our sampler! Misty here. Cant wait to taste it. I have some "tea" bags that decaffeinate my drinks because im trying to cut down caffeine. Ill get decaf later and see how yalls is.

  8. Having unusual moments/days within the tapestry of our routines is what keeps it all from looking or feeling the same. And these are the ones we maybe cherish the most because, regardless of how we felt at the time, these memories are stamped as "unusual" in our minds. Yes, routine can be very good for our mental health, but also routine is what keeps us going when we don't really want to get out of bed – and usually we feel better for it. I love the idea of a snacking garden – especially one you won't have to replant every year! LOL Thank you for sharing this video today.

  9. I find it so endearing that you are just your real self with us but need to put yourself together to go out in public. I am so glad we aren't considered "public" 🙂

  10. I thought chicken pox would be a great birth control.

We got frost on a night we weren’t supposed to and the flowering trees bit it.😢

  11. I’m 60 and now watch my infant grandson 3 days a week. I reflect back to a crazy time of my life when my boys were little and my grandma came over to visit and I felt like I needed to get my younger son down for bed so I could visit with her. She gave me some of the best wisdom I have received in my life. She said, “Honey, go tuck him in and kiss him. It won’t be long before he won’t want you to do that.” Age and wisdom. Appreciate the moment.

  12. Hi Jess! Love all your content I've been following for years. I just used the bootstrap trays and hemp mats. They work great! I agree with you that they produce a lot.

  13. Yeah Can you imagine coming across the ocean to settle Plymouth or Jamestown or being like a Daniel Boone or lewis and Clark explorer? And you dk if in a week it's gonna be forest fire dry and hot or a freezing blizzard and you dk how long it will be that way hours? Days? Weeks? What food can you carry what clothes and gear you will need. Or being a roaming native American like the souix and just not having any idea of basic weather?

  14. Lol, I also go to the garden center when I'm under the weather. Our local nursery also has beautiful things made by local artists, so I spend a good amount of time just walking around. But I'm saving all my coins for the growing season. I picked up some violas, and it makes me so happy looking at some color on my patio while everything else is slowly waking up. I just love spring 🌸

  15. Random I know but please Jess tell me what brand is your cropped sweatshirt. Is it Vuori? So cute and I noticed you have one in blue as well as pink. I NEED one!! 😃
