Hi!
My name is Justin and I have my managed my family’s business (S&K Greenhouse) for the last 10 years! It is a local garden center in Shelby, NC that my family started around 25 years ago.

We have a strong desire to discuss and teach gardening to the online community and welcome anyone who wants to learn. Though we have been involved in the plant world for decades we have found that there is always something to learn when it comes to gardening.

Whether you are a master gardener or just starting out this channel is for you. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch our videos!

What’s up everybody Justin at SNK greenhouse and today we’re giving another Connor for tour we’re in the month of March spring is right around the corner and I am so excited to show you guys what came in up first we got the cedris Atlantica glocka pendula that’s just a weeping Atlas Cedar these

Are in Serpentine form as you can see it’s got the S going back and forth that’s just how it’s been trained I see this as a really great specimen in if you look at these right here same exact plant but just trained in more of a they they call this a fish

Hook uh style where the top leader has just been trained to go back down over a long period of time these can get very large but they’re very slow growing so if you need a nice little specimen in your yard nothing to worry about this will definitely make a great talking

Piece and but I don’t want to skip over this pisia pons uh p doua this is actually called slenderina it’s a it’s a weeping Blue Spruce it’s going to stay a little smaller than a typical weeping Blue Spruce but same idea here nice weeping pendulus foliage year round blue

Color stunning specimen and I don’t want to walk past these guys pcia ab’s acrona so this this type of Norway we have showed on some other videos this is more of a uh mediumsized Spruce it’s not going to grow too large maybe around 12

To 15 feet but you got to grow it for the cones the red cones are actually the prettiest thing about this tree although it does kind of have irregular shaped branching this is an absolutely great specimen if you need a mediumsized tree and then right up above it we have

Mr bowling ball Arbor VY now this is a great foundational Conifer so if you know I could see maybe these going along a border or maybe some foundational places around your house these will help accent the plants like I just showed you some more of other specimens Mr bowling

Ball uh turns a lot more blue in the spring and summer right now you’re seeing it’s a little bit more coppery foliage that’s the kind of color it turns this time of year but it will be turning back pretty soon stays about 2 to 3T tall and grows in a mounding habit

Absolutely gorgeous shrub and then right here one of my favorites forever Goldie Arbor VY this is a great specimen or uh great for Corner plantings it’s going to get about 6ot tall 3 foot wide year- round gold foliage and the roots are pretty shallow so I’m not scared to plant this one

Close to the house if you need to although it looks great out in the lands cape and then right here we have some more foundational uh coners this is Golden Globe Arbor V these came from eisy Nursery shout out to eisy Nursery these are some of the prettiest Golden

Globe Arbor VES I’ve ever seen these grow up into a 3 to 4ft ball shape not a lot of pruning is going to be needed with this I could see this accenting uh other darker green shrubs or um maybe even purple shrubs like Laura pedum I

Think would look nice against this but I love Golden Globe and right up in front of it is a head Arbor V this is another great foundational shrub uh kind of like the Golden Globe except for it stays a little bit smaller maybe a 3X3 ball another great you know Arbor vites

They grow in a lot of different places a lot of different zones we’re here in zone now 8A in Shelby North Carolina and they do absolutely great here in our Southern heat check out this guy this is a weeping White Pond I believe this one’s Niagara Falls don’t see the tag

I’ll put it on the screen but wow just a crazy specimen the needles on these uh eastern white pines are very soft they’re not Stark hard like a Japanese black pine or a Bosnian Pine which I’ll show later on um this is just going to have more more of a regular shape it

Might need help training if you want it to look a specific way but that thing is just absolutely gorgeous whip cord Cedar this is another thya I have some of uh one planted down at our sign at the entrance very slow growing but it’s just very unique I mean

Check check out that texture that is just unreal it will eventually get about 4 feet tall 4T wide it is Evergreen and it really brightens up going into uh spring and summertime and then right right behind it we have a bird’s nest Spruce this is another Pisa abies but this is not uh

Going to grow into a big specimen this is a lower growing shrub great for accents great for foundational plantings year round nice green color kind of grows flat on top so it’s not going to get very tall but just an excellent plant right behind it I have Pia

Orientalis not Skylands actually this is Firefly Firefly is pretty much like a dwarf Skylands this is probably one of the lowest uh or slowest growing shrubs I have out here but in the spring and this is going to be happening here in a couple months the new growth is like

This really really bright gold like it they call it Firefly cuz it it’s like a firefly like I don’t know how else to say it I’ll throw a picture up so you can see it the new growth is awesome and it is actually the dwarf version of

Skylands which I’ll show you right here if you want to walk up and see Skylands this is more of a full grown tree here this will get 20 25 ft tall it’s a lot faster growing but same concept the new growth is absolutely gorgeous the gaps in the branches are a

Little more they don’t grow as tight as Firefly but if you have the space this is what you would want instead of the Firefly but if you have a smaller space in your landscape Firefly is perfect now I got to back you up just a little bit

Cuz I don’t want to skip over this this is Cammy Cyprus blue Boulevard again thank you Isley for pruning these up like this just I love this plant for so many reasons one easy to grow two it’s hard to find a blue color especially if we’re eliminating

Sprues so this is a false Cyprus it loves to be pruned you can shape these into squares rectangles triangles circles whatever you know this is why they a lot of times they’ll do the Hindu pen style and they’ll trim them up or they’ll make spirals out of them but if

You if you just left this Al it will get into maybe a 12 to 15t specimen but if you keep it trimmed up you could keep it easily 6 ft or more I’ll show you I got in a big one back here check out this big boy this thing’s

Already probably 10t or more uh but you get the idea like this one has not been pruned this was kind of well it has been pruned some but it’s not been it’s not kept small they just kind of let it get some size on it so it’s absolutely a gorgeous

Specimen now right over here we have amberglow Redwood amberglow I love it for a couple reasons one if you remember the older one I’ve shown before called uh Gold Rush this is similar but Amber glow does not burn uh in the Sun so even in our

Southern heat even in the dead of Summer and our brutal July and August this thing is not going to burn it’s going to grow up about 25 foot tall and redwoods are and bald cypresses are some of the only conifers that you can plant in a

Low spot where it’s supy or maybe if you want a tree to kind of soak up the water this won’t get root Rod it’ll actually enjoy it so keep that in mind if you have poor drainage now this these two right here some of my favorites that we got in I’ll

Start with this one this is Paia glocka uh I mean pinis glocka brevifolia I believe I’m saying that right pinis parva Flora glocka brevifolia sorry it’s a Japanese White Pine let’s just put it that way it’s a variety of Japanese White Pine it’s a very soft needle I

Love the spacing and gaps in between the branches as this grows up it it it really is uh a beautiful tree again you got that blue color which I love uh right up in front of it is a weeping white spruce this is a narrow weeping Spruce it’s going to get probably in

That 12 to 15 foot range but it’s never going to get more than 3 or 4 foot wide this is really great for Corner plantings uh maybe on either side of your steps on the corner of the house or out into the landscape I think this is a

Great specimen maybe plant some of those Golden Gloves around it I don’t know I think that would be a pretty look and this is a weeping white pine now this is hard to appreciate right now but when these things get some size on them I know we’ve done some uh garden tours

Over at William mcross house he’s got a couple of these weeping white pines that I I think they’re the prettiest thing he has in his yard and he’s got a lot in his yard very soft needle you can train these to grow however you want in a lot

Of different forms they’ll probably get around 15 ft something like that eventually Joe cozy umbrella Pine I’ve talked about these before if you’ve never touched an umbrella pine you’re missing out on life rubbery needles the texture is just it don’t even it feels like a plastic plant I wish I wish you

Could feel it but Joe cozy is more of a narrow form umbrella pine but it does get still about 15t tall maybe in the 4 to 6 foot wide range again excellent specimen uh slow to moderate grower like this weeping Norway spruce I got here now the leader of this has been

Trained to go back down that’s what I love about weeping Norway sprues the tops can be trained up they can be trained down so this will actually never get taller than you see right now but it will continue to get Fuller and it’s going to be putting on some new growth

Here in May and that new growth is a bright green that’ll knock your eyes out let me show you another weeping Norway spruce back here that we got in you see this one’s been trained to grow a little bit taller see it right here they’ve taken this leader let it grow up

And now it’s on its way back down but if you wanted to you could train it back up and you could grow it probably 20 ft tall or more if you wanted to now this tree right here this is Pia Omar pendel Bruns and Omar is a Serbian Spruce and I

Have found these to be very hearty in our area my my two favorite sprues for our area as far as like the the easiness to grow orientalis which is Oriental spruce and the Omas I have found to just grow really well here um in our Zone 8A

In the South but this is a weeping Omar pendel lebrun’s it does get a lot of height on it but kind of like that white spruce I showed you it’s going to stay very narrow so it fits in small Landscapes I love it let’s walk on up

Here I was about to show you something this is not forever Goldie this is another gold Arbor V called gentar now these have been pruned to get that nice tight shape you can keep it that way left alone this will get about 15 ft tall 4 feet wide so if forever

Goldie doesn’t get tall enough for you this is a good one cuz it looks very similar same hardiness level I would say now let me show you a couple more foundational conifers I really love this one’s so gorgeous I mean yes you could use it as a specimen you could use it

Along a border this is a a Colorado Blue Spruce called globosa Pia pons globosa this is like a 3 to 4 foot tall and wide um shrub very very pretty with gold shrubs maybe the Golden Globe or the Skylands or the Firefly that I showed you pretty slow growing and then right

Behind it I don’t talk a lot about junipers especially gold ones this is lime glow Juniper and what I love about it it only gets about 2 feet tall but four feet wide so it’s got a nice spread on it but it’s not necessarily like a

Ground cover Juniper this is more of a shrub and the reason they call it lime glow is because in the summer when it warms up this is the winter coat it’s a chartreuse green color like it it’s gorgeous here’s that same globosa but on a standard uh this has

Been grafted to make into a tree form so you’ll always have that trunk but you have the big ball uh shape on top it’s a very great for um smaller Landscapes or Corner plantings let’s venture over here and talk about a gold H noi I really love this

Is camius confucious and this is a hinoi Cyprus I love The Irregular branching on it uh confucious is a moderate grower but it’ll eventually get around 12T tall this central leader will become more prominent and then you’ll have the gold weeping foliage it’ll green up a little

Bit more in the summer this is an absolute standout in the landscape I’d love hinis they’re very easy to grow very versatile they’ll tolerate a decent amount of shade but for the best color I would put it in at least six or more hours of Sun this is a Japanese black pine I’m

Very familiar with called Thunderhead I have one of these at my house that’s probably at least 12et tall by now probably 8 foot wide it’s probably the most spectacular specimen I have in my yard in the springtime these candles will put on about a foot of growth and

That’s pretty much your new growth for the year doesn’t it change you know even the dead of winter you got the dark green needles this is very different this is Pisa ab’s Cobra now I know it looks crazy right now this is a very slow grower you just have

These branches at the bottom right now but there will be more branches later on but it’s just extremely SL slow very different very narrow growing gets pretty tall but in the landscape this would just look completely unusual if you want to talk in piece grow you a

Pcia ABY Cobra now this is a Suga canadensis uh this one’s called Golden Splendor sugga is hemlock canadensis being Canada so we have a Canadian hemlock that stays gold year round so most conifers need a lot of sun this one can take shade almost almost all hemlocks are pretty great in shade

And that’s unusual for a conifer up through here we have some more uh blue sprues one of my good old standbys Fat Albert this was this is probably um the best Blue Spruce you can grow in the South whatever they have uh grafted or created it out of is very

Tolerant to heat I would feel very comfortable growing this up to Zone 8A maybe even 8B if anybody’s out there in 8B and has successfully grown this leave it down in the comments I’d like to know but mine at the entrance of entryway of our business I’ve got one down there and it

Has just done absolutely perfect it does get really well draining soil so that’s probably why but it’s put on a ton of growth right here we have another weeping Norway spruce called froberg it’s a lot slower than a typical weeping Norway spruce so it’s not going to get

Quite as tall maybe train it up to about 7 feet three foot wide but when the top leader comes back down it just has a lot of personality I I’m a I’m a personally a big fan of weep and conifers I know not everybody is but I think they look great sorry these

Pear trees are blooming behind me it’s just got my throat tore up this is Pisa pons uh hoopsy or Hoops eye it’s similar to Fat Alber but it’s it doesn’t get quite as big it’s going to stay a lot smaller probably get up to about 10 12

Ft and stay a lot narrower but what I love about hoop side is when it puts on New Growth it’s it’s baby blue it’s it’s crazy and then the interior needles stay a lot darker blue so you have like this two-tone effect back here we have a

Larger specimen this is a deodor cedar called gold cone you will want some space with this one it’s going to get probably 25 ft tall probably 8 to 10 feet wide could get even bigger over time absolute standout if you have the space for it if

You don’t have the space for it you might want to consider these two guys these are both Bosnian Pines pinus Luca dmas this one is Irish Bale so it’s only going to get about six foot tall Max probably 4 foot wide it it grows in in a really fat pyramidal shape and then

Right behind it this is another bosing pine called compact gem but it still gets some height to it maybe 10 12T tall but it is going to stay a lot more narrow so I recommend this uh maybe if you want to put it on the corner of your house or if

You have a smaller landscape this would be actually a really good tree for that and it grows slow before you wonder off too far let’s squeeze on through here and talk about these Falling Waters bald cypers now they’re pretty bald right now again we’re shooting in March

They’re just starting to Leaf out these things are crazy like I don’t know if you’ve seen weeping bald cypresses before but they just look so cool again they can soak up a lot of water so if they’re in a low spot you don’t have to worry about drainage with these and as

They grow they’re just going to develop so much character right here we have another Canadian Hemlock called ginch White I think I’m saying that right the new growth is what you grow it for it has it’s Ivory almost a white New Growth very pretty again if you have more of a

Shaded area hemlocks are great this one’s not going to grow real tall it’s going to grow into a big ball more or less so very different and then right up above it this is another gold hinoi kind of like the confucious but this one’s verdona and it

Grows about half the rate so if confusus got too big for you you might want to consider uh verdona as a specimen it’ll probably get up about 6 feet and then cap out maybe at 8 feet I mean again conifers really never stop growing so I

Don’t know if you guys know that they do slow down but they never really stop growing right here is a Alaskan Cedar this is Cami camius n n contensous pendula you got to have some space for this one again probably going to get about 25t tall 10t wide pendulous

Branches one of my favorite conifers of all time just because I just think they’re so unique and while we’re at it let’s talk about another eastern white pine this is blue shag now I have one of these in my landscape it’s now gotten about maybe 3T tall probably 3T wide eventually I’m

Going to say 4T by 4ot very soft needles again eastern white pines very soft this one glows grows in a natural Globe shape so great for a specimen or a foundational shrub and then over here this is pcia AB shwood compact it if this is a more of a a

Small a medium siiz Norway spruce but I love how dense it grows very pretty natural pyramidal shape but I got to show you and I just walked right by it a minute ago come over here I’ll show you one of my favorite Norway sprues this is Pia ab’s

Tmore check that thing out again a Norway spruce this one very slow growing grows GRS very dense and compact will kind of grow into a pyramid over time just look how full this thing is like this to me this is absolutely gorgeous while we’re on the topic of Norway

Sprues this is Pia ab’s pumilia or pumila this is more of a low growing shrub it grows probably 4ot across again very dense I love this very similar to tmore but if tmore gets too big for you you might I want to consider that one and if we want to talk about a

Larger specimen another uh Ori orientalis and Oriental spruce this one’s called gouty and I know a lot of people successfully grow this all the way through Zone 8B it it’s it gets tall and and large like the Skylands grows about the same rate up to probably 25 ft

But stays dark green and just has very soft sort of pendulous looking branches a little irregular shape but over time this has a very nice look to it well folks that concludes this Conor for tour if you’re local to the area or maybe you’re within driving distance and you

  1. Hey everybody! I started a raised garden bed company, Gro-Rite! My first product is a beautiful raised garden bed you can assemble in 10 minutes or less. Claim your bed before they are gone – pre-orders are piling up fast and quantities are limited. -> https://groritegarden.com/launch

  2. Great video Justin! If you had to plant a conifer in a small space (tree can't exceed width of 3' max) would you choose a Jantar Arborvitae or a Lemon Cypress? I've had LC on my list for awhile, but the JA on this video has also caught my eye. I know that a mature Forever Goldie would be too wide. Thanks in advance for your input!! 🤩🌱

  3. They sold the fat Albert in my zone 9a Jacksonville, Florida and I got it. It will be in a big pot for a year or two and will get morning sun. We’ll see how it does, I’m hoping it survives our summer.

  4. Question friend. Is it a bad idea to plant berry producing plants close to your house as they can attract mice? Also, im enjoying the Morgan arborvitae, which i learned about it from you.

  5. I'm not good with flowers, but can I ask a question I live in near holden beach nc. What zone would that be. We have sandy . I planted stuff but never succeed with anything . Any ideas that are low maintenance

  6. That is absolutely the best example of a gardening video I have ever seen.
By showing the mature plant as you discuss the currently available stock really
helps us make informed [smart] purchases. Thank you for all the effort.

  7. Yay your back! Love your videos and really enjoyed the tour of the conifers. Thanks for all the detail and showing the mature specimen. Have a great growing season!

  8. Hi Justin, is there a type of fertilizer that you would recommend or like for newly planted emerald green arbrovites? Planted them last year, they have done great, but now looking a little brown :(. Thanks for help!!! Looking forward to visiting yall soon!

  9. I would like to see more videos about weeping and other unusual conifers that do well in the South and how to take care of them properly. I fell in love with Conifers in the Pacific Northwest and have tried to create a conifer garden in Middle Tennessee and it has been a struggle lol.

  10. I love your videos, I sure wish you wld do more! Question, I’m in zone 4 and I have deer issues. But I have a wood line that is slowly clearing from oak wilt. I’d like to plant a screen across my property that’s in the woods to hide from the neighbors that I’m stating to see. Dapple sun, any suggestions?

  11. Love seeing these varieties. Such a helpful video. I am in zone 5 and found some I’d like to get.

  12. Thank you so much for all these really informative videos. I live in Kentucky and we have a limited selection at nurseries near me and so I end up ordering a lot online and it helps to know what I'm looking for and love!

  13. I’d love to see a video incorporating conifers in a landscape that has essentially none. My house is surrounded by 100% hardwoods with a good deal of landscaping that is almost no conifers, native or ornamental.
We live on the other side of Lincolnton and will be stopping by!

  14. Thanks for the great content. I’ve been able to choose and install conifers you taught me about. Great plants in the right places.

  15. I LOVE CONIFERS…..but I live & do landscaping in Los Angeles and our climate doesnt support most of this, my east coast roots cant shake my love of these…. I’ve been using Mugo Pines as understory to olives and they do ok!

  16. Wish I would be able to know how to plant conifers, I think you don’t actuallyplant them you mound dirt up to them is that correct?
