  1. I did an experiment one year with beans. Even though the packet did not recommend indoor sowing I did half indoor and half outdoor.
And guess what? Even though the seedlings were a good size, the outdoor beans surpassed the indoor sown by size and vigor!
    I am in Zone 6.

  2. Starting a garden in Grand Rapids and WOW I need to get moving!! We built raisted bed last year but necer got them filled. Looks like I need to order some soil & compost so I can get this garden to happen this year. Thanks for all of the great Michigan information, I really appreciate the knowledge you share for our region!

  3. Thank you for not doing an April Fools Prank on us. At 3:36 you mentioned cucurbitacin concentration for cucumbers during seedling stage but doesn't Cucumis melo (Muskmelons) also do the same thing? What about other cucurbitaceae crops like Squash & Watermelons? Also isn't the cucumber beetle our best friend since they only go after those plants high in cucurbitacin (bitterness) leaving you with non bitter cucumbers (Since the ones they leave alone have too low levels of cucurbitacin to attract cucumber beetles?).

  4. I will always watch you because you make gardening so accessible. Keep helping the masses learn to grow the best vegetables and fruits with 100% nutrient content.

  5. Love your videos! I’m learning so much information as a second season of growing a productive garden. Last year we watched lots of videos as we ramped up our gardening after deciding to “Grow big!” We were very successful. I’m turning to your videos again to refresh my memory. Sad to say I made mistakes this year with first seedlings by planting in some 3 inch pots. I’m waiting for my order to arrive of the smaller seed starting trays for round two of planting and I will add trifecta to the seed starting mix. I thought I had to wait to fertilize the seedlings until they emerged and had their true leaves. I will bottom water and additional water soluble fertilize once a week those seedlings until they get transplanted with the trifecta added. Now I know I can avoid the messy step of using water based fish fertilizer which stinks my house…by adding trifecta to my seed starting mix.

  6. I am jealous of your location near a large body of water. Here in central Ohio I have 6 weeks before the last frost. If I am lucky, maybe it will be 5 weeks.

  7. Any suggestions for starting rose aster? All of the other seeds I’ve started (including a bunch from MIGardener) are doing really well but I’ve gotten zero germination with the rose aster twice now. It’s my first time growing them, so I’m assuming there’s something I’m missing about the specific conditions they like for germination. Thanks in advance for your help and for a great batch of seeds overall!

  8. I can't tell you how consoling you are when you voice, "probably should've started them a few weeks ago…ooopsie". We all are busy with our own stuff and we (probably) are all too hard on ourselves when we don't meet expectations, ourselves or other. You're very kind. Thanks for relieving some of the chains!

  9. I got my seed tray order and couldn’t be happier! 😁They feel very high quality, durable and they are 1/2 the price of some others.

  10. Only thing that matters is when your nighttime temps are consistently above 50 degrees. Cucumbers, peppers, beans, tomatoes, summer flowers will do way better if you base your seed starting for this rather than paying attention to frost dates.

  11. There’s at least 5 starting seasons in cold country.
—Onions and flowers with long starts
    —Hot peppers bit later sweets
—Brassicas, lettuce especially for low tunnels
    —Tomatoes and quicker flowers.

Then beginning June while we transplant we are starting seeds for fall crops.

  12. This is all great information as a zone 5b gardener. My biggest issue is space to start all of these crops.

  13. Wow! Never thought to start some bean plants inside. That would help with sequential planting for sure! Do the packets say when to sow inside? Ill have to look. Youre starting earlier than me on some things. Im in SE Michigan and if i started cukes or summer squash now i think i would have issues, so im waiting a couple of weeks.

  14. Spring time for me is synonymous with tuning into my favourite gardening channels. Thanks for doing what you do!!

  15. Thanks for the bush bean info. Last year all of mine rotted that were direct shown. I will start them indoors this year.

  16. I thought things like cucumbers, melons, beans didn’t like their roots messed with so direct sowing was best. I had trouble growing cukes last year so starting them early might be something I should consider.

  17. 0:00: 🌱 The importance of starting seeds in different seasons for optimal growth.
2:45: 🌱 Starting seeds in small pots is not recommended for fast-growing summer crops like cucumbers due to water retention issues.
5:27: 🌱 Optimal timing for starting seeds is crucial for successful growth of herbs and crops like Dill.
8:18: 🌱 Optimal timing for starting flowers and crops like melons and squash to avoid overgrowth.
10:54: 🌱 Starting various melon and squash seeds in designated trays to prevent overcrowding.

  18. Would watering a raised bed with hot water before planting green bean beans help start them off?

  19. I usually plant 8-10 densely planted 32` rows of bush green beans for my family each year. Sometimes I also add an additional 4+ 32' rows of pole beans. That's an insane amount of beans! There's no way I could possibly start that many seeds indoors!😂 Unfortunately groundhogs have tunneled into my fenced garden and mowed down my beans the past 2 years.😡 They love them as much as we do!!

  20. I am confused… When you say start them… are you saying in a green house? Or can start them now and leave them outside? Zone 5b to 6 here. Can anyone help, no greenhouse here?

  21. Luke,
I don't have space to sow seeds indoors. I am in VA Zone 7B.
Other than cool weather crops (i.e. lettuce, kale), can you perhaps cover some crops that can be sown now using the winter sowing (in jugs) method?
    Thank you. 😊

  22. I understand starting too early; but when is too late? I live in a California desert zone 9a, high heat, high winds daily. Last frost date is supposed to be between mid-February to mid-April. This year is the pits. wide unseasonal temp swings. I haven't started anything! I want to grow an early summer tomato crop garden and then do a fall tomato crop of romas. help.

  23. I am just now startinh peppers and tomatoes. They dont go on the ground here in n. Idaho til after Mothers day to the first of June normally. Last 2 years had to wait til 3rd week of June due to cold and rainy weather. Hoping for a more normal Spring this year! Early crops wont get started til the end of April.Except cabbage and a few others. Living up in the hills we run a good 2 weeks behind the valleys. Thanks for the video today!!

  24. I've really struggled with my health the last few months and I'm feeling so far behind seed starting and garden prepping and hearing you say "oops, well better late than never" really has me motivated! Thank you!

  25. I swear there must be some master schedule of videos gardening channels have to put out. Today is the "Start these seeds in April" video day.

  26. I cant plant outside till the end of May. Its so tempting to start my seeds too early when everyone on you tube is getting ready to plant outside by early May.

  27. I started tomatoes and peppers but don't have enough lights to do more. I planted the things in the garden that can be planted now that the cold won't hurt.

  28. I thought with cucumbers it is just the opposite and you should plant them later in the season to avoid issues with insects. The different bugs decimated my cucumbers last year. I think 3-4 different pests
