Edible Gardening

David Domoney: Rhubarb

Rhubarb is one of the easiest edible plants to grow. It’s frost-resistant and doesn’t need much care and attention. You can grow rhubarb from seed, but it’s much easier to plant a dormant crown. The crowns are taken from strong plants and will be established faster. You can even buy pot-grown rhubarb if you want a super fast start.

Rhubarb will grow happily in a container on a patio or a balcony, though its large root system means it will need a deep pot.

Rhubarb you think of it as being a fruit when it is in fact a vegetable it’s this beautiful established uh root system uh when it all dies back it dies back we call it a crown uh and then it erupts with these these beautiful beautiful stems that laterally turn red and you’ve

Got these huge leaves just at the top which are a perfect shape for the rain to land on and funnel back down all the way along the stem to rehydrate the root that’s underneath I mean I grew these from seed and for such a big plant they’re such a

Very small seed and they germinated really quickly and then i’ I’ve planted them out and of course they just establish themselves year in and year out and and the thing to remember with rhubarb is the redder the stem the sweeter the flavor
