Hi everyone welcome back to my channel I’m Shamira Benson one part of Team Benson and on this chilly desert winter day we are going to talk about how I grow a year supply of Greens in my small space Desert Garden okay guys so when I’m saying your

Supply of greens I had a southern mother so I mean like Call of greens and like making like southern greens but I do grow a year supply of different types of greens which we will talk about that as one of the tips but I’m going to be talking about collard greens for this

For this video’s purposes but like I said other tips later on now I look at greens as how many do does my my family need in the year so one of the things that I do is I try to grow enough to preserve a certain amount I cook collar

Greens for my family of two which actually feeds four Once I make them as a gallon siiz bag actually think it’s a gallon and a half size bag that I put in the freezer now that means that I need to have collard greens about once a month I need 11 bags just because

There’s at least one month in there that we can just eat them fresh out of the garden and I want to try and get up to two bags a month now I’ve had a lot of people say to me like that’s not enough collor greens like I eat way more collig

Greens than that and to that I say well that might be what your body needs now that isn’t what our bodies needs because we eat a different um type of diet so I’m very particular about the diet that we eat now team Benson is a Jewish

Household as you guys know I’m a Jewish Gardener and I follow the Torah when it says um something about paraphrasing here but the leaves are your medicine and I look at all leaves as medicine so not even just the leaves of like a herb or a tree or something like that but all

Leaves I consider medicine therefore it’s not something that we eat every single day because not every single day you need that medicine now when you look at what greens do like collar greens for instance they are very high in vitamin K magnesium um vitamin C all these

Different things so you kind of need those things at certain times but you don’t need them all the time which is why when I don’t know if it’s like everybody’s family but everybody would say oh my God you ate too many greens now that’s going to make you poop well

There’s a lot of magnesium in Greens so at times where our bodies are higher prone to like constipation or different things like that then we make a pot of greens and it solves that problem or if you are sick and you need some extra

Vitamin C or vitamin K yeah eat a pot of greens and it kind of solves that problem but it’s like if you are eating them regularly then it’s too much of a good thing so we space them out thus we only need a bag to two bags a month of

Greens so now that we have that explanation let’s talk about how I grow a year supply of them first thing is the type of green that I have now I’m going to take you over to my green bed so that you can see what types that I grow I

Throw grow three types that I use for my country Green Mix so I grow collar greens I also grow mustard greens and then I grow dinosaur K now yes I do love things like turnup greens and stuff like that but in regular Kel like um dwarf Kel sometimes

I grow that but these greens I find are the best for my climate to reduce the amount of insects now when I say that I mean that I can plant them early enough to where they don’t get like overran by insects yes I do things like I cover

Them so that then they’re netted um to keep out some of those moths but then also during this time they can handle our cold weather just fine and there’s no bugs there’s no bugs in my garden no cabbage Loopers there’s no mths because it’s too cold so I’m able to really grow

Them and really get a lot out of them at the peak time which is like January or December January February and March and then come like April is when it starts to warm up and then we start to get those moths back but for a long period

Of time I don’t have any moths or anything to worry about competing eating the greens that I’m trying to grow in order to have my year Supply so it all depends on the type of greens that you like too every now and then I will plant

Like a turnup GRE green because I do like the turnup bottoms with my greens but the greens are like a nightmare so I try not to plant them in the same bed that I have my um Regular collards because for some reason they just attract bugs the other thing I don’t

Grow are the red types of greens like your red mustards stuff like that because for some odd reason red greens are like a magnet for M for bugs in my garden I don’t know why I don’t know but literally they’ll be covered in aibs they are the first to be covered in aibs

The first to attract cabbage Loopers all those different things I do grow colors in my garden like swis chard and rainbow chard and stuff like that but red like kale red um cabbage red like mustard grains all are like attacked so soon in my garden the next

Tip is I harvest often I don’t wait until my greens get super Super H huge I find that one they are tough when they’re super super huge and two they’ll grow more leaves if you keep cutting them because they are a cutand come again plant so you can get way more

Collor greens way more kale all of that if you just keep cutting it so we’re going to go through and we’re going to harvest all of our greens now I have green I’m going to cut these all the way down to their top little Crown so this

Little crown of leaves right here I’m going to leave and I’m going to do that starting when they’re really young because as you can see these these very bottom ones look a little rough but these other ones don’t like that looks perfectly fine so if you get these

Grains when they’re young and they’re just now starting to grow then you’re getting more out of the plant because other as you can see these ones will always get eaten by something because they’re lowest to the ground and they’re really not needed for the plant same

Thing with the K I’m going to go ahead and I’m going to harvest all of of these leaves and as you can see my leaves don’t have any type of damage or anything like that to them because I’m harvesting them at a young age now I have greens here I have some greens

There excuse my mess we have cloth because soon it’ll be cold again and then we have greens up here we have some greens over here in this bed and we have some greens down here in the pots so we have greens everywhere all right let’s Harvest

Them now the greens that I don’t find to be perfect like these ones are those first leaves that come out um they’re at the base of the plants these ones I give to the worms my worms love them and they turn them into worm castings which I

Then go back into my garden as fertilizer and guys on a side note don’t forget to feed the worms in your bed too so all you do is you just dig a little hole Pop Some Leaves down there and then just bury that hole now we’re not going

To put anything like um of meats or anything like that it’s going to make my soil like go like bad or anything like that or super I think it’s called anerobic so we’re just going to use the leaves that we have bury them down in there and the worms are going to be

Happy and they’re going to eat that probably in about like two days also like a side note I have R wiggler worms so they are voracious eaters they love to eat and they produce a lot of compost which is how I have such a healthy garden

Motorcycle which is how I have such a healthy garden without having to over fertilize it or use a lot of fertilizers a lot of people ask me what I use to fertilize some sometimes it’s just fish fertilizer and that’s if I remember but I always do these steps to feed my worms

Because they’re like my pets and they just produce fertilizer which is natural normally it’s not until the summer until I get big giant leaves because I don’t have a lot of sun in my garden my Garden’s already not full like full sun like I probably get like 4 to 6 hours

Like during the summer but right now I’m only getting like maybe three hours of like direct sun but when I get leaves this size it makes me so happy cuz it’s nice and chilly and they’re big leaves but yes more big leaves to come so guys one of my other tips is

That I like to grow my Greens in waves so I started with these ones which are my older ones and they are bigger than these ones so what that did is it allowed these ones to grow I cut them all the way back to the crowns it GES

More sun to those then I cut those back to the crowns and then it’s just going to be kind of like an alternating thing to where they’re going to get equal amount of sun soon they’re going to be all the same size they kind of equal themselves out and then I get really

Huge leaves that I just keep cutting back now this also allows me to plant a lot of plants in a small space as you guys can see there are 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 just from this side to this side

And we’re going to grow a lot of greens that way now with that said when I get to the third cutting so the third Harvest of my first round of greens then I add compost and as you can see the layer of soil kind of um lowers and that

Is because I have the red wiggler worms so the compost which is excuse me pile of mess which is my worm compost from the Arizon worm farm it is going to just really feed the soil now I don’t worry about adding worm castings or anything like that because

Right now my worms are active it’s a little bit cooler so it’s not as hot and I am feeding them so I’m feeding them in there by putting like little green leaves down in there um Sometimes some orange peels down in there and it’s really making them active which makes

Them poop a lot so I don’t have to worry about topping with worm castings or anything like that I’m just adding some compost which is also going to give the worms more um food and it’s going to give the soil more nutrients so don’t forget to do

That now the goal here guys is not to bury the leaves or the stems it’s just to sprinkle it around the plants you’re just adding more nutrients to your soil now this isn’t going to like I said if it’s not like a tomato plant that if you

Bury it it’s going to add more roots or add more stems or anything like that this is just simply as your watering it’s going to add more nutrients to your plants and give them more like nitrogen and stuff like that to grow bigger better leaves now guys some of the other ways

That I fertilize my garden is with fish fertilizer I like to use this one and all I do is I just fertilize maybe like once a month sometimes twice a month depending on how the garden is growing um this just adds like some extra nitrogen but using the compost I find is

Like my best solution and it helps a lot and it keeps the Flies down because this will make their it will just give you like a Jumanji level of flies now um when I’m building the bed too if you guys remember that video of me building

The bed and preparing to plant any of these plants I also put Garden time down in the soil um Sometimes some bone meal well I always put bone meal sometimes a little bit of blood Mill and I bury things in there like while there’s nothing in there I’m always burying

Something in there whether it’s food scraps whether it’s like a fish head like anything like I chop up really small bury it down in there and while there’s there’s nothing in there I just let the worms eat and so that makes it to where I don’t really have to add a

Lot of worm castings CU by the time I plant in there there is a nice level of worm castings in there also I use um steer manure too so that’s just a little extra things of what I do to the Garden before I plant things even even in the bed okay so I

Grew this amount for my worms I’m going to feed my worms and don’t worry my worms aren’t going to starve I do have other leaves that I’m going to feed them in a different video and then I grew this batch for us so many greens I’m excited

About this now some of these greens are smaller because some of my green plants this is the first cutting off of them so they’re just going to get bigger and bigger and bigger and I didn’t waste any of these small leaves because I cut them early so I hope that this video was
