How much work to replace this lawn section with a mulch/native plants garden bed?

So as the title suggests I want to dig up the lawn in this top section (outlined in red) and replace it with a garden bed, probably with wood-chip mulch and native plants/flowers. I’m sick of wasting money to water it when it doesn’t grow well anyway and always looks terrible compared to the other lawns. Also it’s a nightmare to mow.

My main question is how big of a job is digging up the lawn? I’ve never dug anything this size up before and am a bit hesitant to get my shovel and just start digging cuz I’m worried I might be biting off more than I can chew (I’m working and studying full time atm)

Is it worth getting a landscaper to come and give us a quote or do you reckon my wife and I could smash it out ourselves over the long weekend?

3 days for one guy. remember you have to dump the grass. (bin)

Are you removing the palms? It will be a struggle to get anything established under those.

Don’t dig the grass out, smother it with a layer if cardboard them some soil that natives like and mulch on top. Plant the natives into that soil and by the time they are settled the grass should be dead.

Just attach a section at a time 4 sq m at most.

You could spray the grass, then the following week mulch it and plant straight into it. Are you planning on leaving the palms in place? If not, then they would have to be dealt with first.

Note: I do not plan on getting rid of the palm trees.
