Moon flowers

Does anyone have any idea how to get rid of moon flowers? They’re beautiful but spread like crazy and I’ve been told they’re poisonous to humans and animals. I have several bushes of them in my yard and no clue the proper way to deal with them.

If you don’t like the look, that is one thing, but I wouldn’t get rid if them because you heard they were poisonous. TONS of plants in our gardens are poisonous, a shocking percentage if you look it up. Most people and animals just leave them alone and it isn’t a issue. Unless you’ve caught a kid or a dog with a moonflower in it’s mouth, I think it’s bo big deal

They do attract a lot of bees in the early morning.

But if you want to get rid of them then cut them to just a few inches above the ground so that you know where the growing point is.

Now that you have access to the main stem, you can gently dig around it and try to pull up as much of the root as you can.

Even a little bit of root will grow back so get as much as you can but just know that you might have to repeat this process whenever you see the new growth, and get that next bit of root that you missed.

The seedlings are also easy to identify so just pull those up every time you see them.

Do this for a couple of seasons and you should at least minimize the number of germination of new plants in your yard.

Fortunately they don’t grow by runners so it’s not like you’ll see them several feet away from the mother plant, unless seeds got shifted over there somehow.

Mostly any seeds are dropped near the mother plant and you can just deal with them all in that one general area.
