It’s impossible to do wrong. The fun is experimenting; what ever happens, happens.
That being said this is just a jar of water and dirt. You’ll probably see worms or Cyclops, maybe some bug larvae. Should add some Algea or some plants.

I feel you left your coffee out to long. Think it spoiled.

No you did nothing wrong. It will eventually clear, just give it time 🙂
I think you only took the water from a clayey place
(maybe a puddle),
the clay is very fine-grained and it takes weeks for it to completely settle,
I’ve done this before when I took the ecosphere from a muddy puddle.

After many successful (and honestly without any knowledge on the theory of ecospheres, nor experience) ecospheres that are still going after almost a year, some time ago I got “the itch” to go to a nearby river after work to do another one and, well, just relax in nature a bit. This time, I’ve got some experience and some reading done on the subject over the winter PLUS a full on DIY collection kit. So I was prepared. I even went to the same river where I’ve made successful ecospheres in the past.
Well… when it settled, god damn it was a dreadful sight. Much like yours. I immediately thought of taking it to the river and dispose of it. But pushed it over to the next day (it was raining) and eventually forgot about it. It had no life whatsoever. Apparently. Because a few days ago I finally got to go dispose of it and when I looked at it, it’s now full of life!
So, just let it be! Maybe you will get a nice surprise! Just don’t let it sit in bright direct sunlight. Put it away, forget about it and come here to update us when you finally remember to see what’s going on 😀

See how it goes.
Next time, I would leave more air. I also prefer to include plants.

You did well. Just sit back and watch.
the air/soil/water ratio looks good.
