Gardeners and homesteaders welcome back to Sandy Bottom Homestead and I want you to know that today I’m going to prove how much I care about you guys and I’m going to do something that I hate to do more than anything in the world and we’re going to get into that in a minute

But I want to know uh before we get started leave us a comment below if you know the difference between your climate and your weather because this is everything about gardening to give you guys a little update this Garden right here is 98% planted the main section of

Our garden and then if we come over here yeah I can see I was using Cletus recently um this is about 90% completed and once things germinate we will do a complete garden tour of everything we’ve got going on here so um and this totally ties in to this right now because we

Know our climate but we’re following our weather and it seems like it would be the same thing but it’s completely different and the the full disclosure on this is I had a company reach out to me and um they sent me a weather station to review and

So this is going to kind of serve as a review for that weather station which believe it or not I was already I was actually just about to pull the trigger on it and um they reached out so we got it and um I’m going to show you the

System how we use it and why I think it’s so important to get out of just following the temperatures and knowing more and more I’ve talked about this before and people really don’t seem to care about weather but I’m telling you if you don’t do nothing else and you

Follow nothing else your weather will dictate everything for your garden and it’s going to keep you going in the right direction the point where I do something for you guys that I hate and that’s ladders I absolutely hate ladders more than you could ever imagine and um

I just installed this the other day so let me go over this thing for you and then it’s going to kind of and I’ll break down as we go through what it’s reading and why we care about it so first of all I had to install this like

Super super high well super high but as high as I could and um it’s obviously telling me the wind it collects the rain up here so it tells you the rain how much rain you get the direction of the wind and then this will read the

Pressure and the humidity so all of this combined this one sensor will give us all of that information and the way I had to install it think I’m going to try and Conquer my fear and stay up here for a minute um the way I had to install it

Is you have to get it high and it has to be like I think it was like two times as far away from the tallest structure around it but I mean if you can see I got trees all around around me I got my

House so I did the best I could but this actually works out really good because it’s going to give me all of my weather information that’s in my garden and that’s super important so I don’t really care what the weather is down the road I want to know what’s going on in my

Garden I want to know when the greenhouse blows over what was the wind that was hitting the greenhouse when it blew over I want to know how much rain fell in my yard I want to know what the temperature was in this microclimate that we have here you know I’ve seen it

Frost over there at my neighbors and then not freeze here so I want to know all that stuff and this is really going to help me and so when we go in to look at the readout on it you’ll see but this has already helped me more than I could

Imagine so before we go look at the uh the readout I do want to say weather is basically what’s going on currently let’s say this year um climate is what happens over time like period of years so it’s an average of everything right so your last frost day would be your

Climate but the frost that I had last night which we did have a frost last night in coastal North Carolina was my weather and so it’s really important that we know the difference between all those and when you start to break it down you’ll see Trends right and you can

Build your own Trends so we can take this weather station here and we can start you know trending what our temperatures are doing what our winds are how much rain we’re getting for instance my B Mentor he’s got a um a weather station and he over the years

Has figured out that in the winter and spring I may be a little bit off by this but it was fascinating that if I think it was either three or 5 Ines of rain a month led to a better honey Harvest so he was able to figure that out based on

How it was producing in his yard versus what the rain averages were in his yard in his area so we have to think about that right now I’m going to go in here and show you this readout and then we’ll kind of go over what it does so we’ve

Got all of our stuff here um gives you like a rough forecast our temperature our humidity now see this humidity here is going to be really really important for outside in the summertime because I’ll be able to track when the disease hits my tomatoes and that’s something

That I need to know because I know that the humidity helps with the disease on the tomatoes it helps magnify and make it worse um this is inside temperature which you know is nice but doesn’t really matter for the the garden um the wind direction so this wind direction is

Important because and I know this already but you’ll learn that wherever the wind comes from will dictate the temperatures in your area or help to dictate it and then obviously your gust and your average winds and stuff like that and your barometric pressure as you can see it’s been climbing so we’re

Getting nicer and nicer whether we just had like a couple days of rain and it tells you your moon phase so if you are planting by the moon this is a great way to do it um and there’s a whole thing behind Planning by the moon so I don’t

Do it but I do kind of understand it like I understand the draw to it but it’ll also tell you all that thing that’s made me really happy about is I have another temperature sensor that I’ve been using for years but when the Sun hits it like the other day it said

It was like 98° outside dude it wasn’t 98° this one was reading 58 which is what it was so it really nice but going through through all of this and knowing our weather and our climate is going to help the whole process so we’re going to get averages we’re going to understand

The weather that’s coming by looking at pressure and this is something that we should all look into I thoroughly believe it because if I didn’t know that stuff I wouldn’t be able to have my garden so planted right now so we’re following it and we’re tracking it day

By day and then for specific reason our potatoes here we’re watching it we you know when it’s cloudy for a couple days the temperature doesn’t warm up and we know it we know it’s not going to warm up and then oh by the way we planted four rows of lettuce the other

Day too so you can see that you can do stuff like if you want to know more about your climate obviously you have an app on your phone you can use a weather station would be great which unfortunately as of yet it does not give

You a 10 day forecast on there but you know who knows one day it might but as far as climate goes there’s websites you can go to look at it pasts and histories and averages and look at them as a whole you know I was doing a uh seed starting

Chart for somebody in California the other day and I was looking at their I look at the averages of the temperature so if you want to seed starting chart you can uh email me in the email below in the description but um they were saying um like you know the

Average high was 87 degrees in July well that dictates a lot by what they’re growing but no knowing that they you can have I just see my cat digging up my wildf flower seeds and I just got instantly mad she’s about to pee in there too go figure um I digress

Quickly I know that even though that’s the average there’s always going to going to be highers and lowers but usually high so there’s going to be higher and higher temperatures right so 87 easily be 9394 which is a planting nightmare planting nightmare so knowing your climate versus your weather so

Important and using the right tools to do it so you know we have technology available to us and I would strongly suggest doing that because taking advantage of it there’s going to be a link below for you to get one if you’d like but all these covers all came like

When I decided to use them I was using the climate that we have to make the decision to build them and then I use my weather to decide when to cover them so just use that food for thought I thought I’ll leave you on climate versus weather is this is what weather does

Goodbye [Applause] hi

  1. Morning from Ohio! I’ve had a similar weather station for several years, it has been very helpful. We are at a slightly higher elevation then where the weather prediction comes from so when the forecast calls for a light frost we usually don’t get it. It’s a fun tool to have!

  2. I always go by the weather. It's like your old bones ache…well damp rainy chilly day. I planted white pines in the corner at the top of my property cause of the north wind comes down over the hill and settles in my yard. With the trees there it breaks that north wind. My little greenhouse at the bottom of the property stays warmer. With no wind, warmer no frost and the heater doesn't have to be on full temperature in the greenhouse. Plants grow better. My flag I have on top of a post about 5' up very seldom doesn't wave. Nice breeze comes through keeps things cooler in the heat of the day. I use the weather for better use for my property. No waste kind of a deal. My Uncle flew pigeons most of his life and always said the "birds don't fly against the east wind". My neighbor has sheds I put my greenhouse about 12 feet away from them. It turns out I am nestled in there. Use the weather and your surroundings. I would love someday to have one of those so I can learn more about the weather. You are so fascinating with your knowledge. You teach well.

  3. Good morning! Wow, a weather station! I've wanted one forever. At first to track the barometric pressure effect to gauge my migraines! But mostly for tracking other pertinent weather. Since becoming a backyard gardener, the Old Farmers Almanac(s) are constant companions for me to garden by; but a weather station is a whole 'nother critter indeed.
I use Weather Underground for my 10 day usually.

  4. If you don't mind, I have questions about the Sainlogic weather station in the Amazon link provided. Is the one you are currently using WiFi? The one on the Amazon page link is not WiFi. Is this a drawback for its intended performance? How are all the features listed for it to be utilized by a laptop/desktop if there is no wifi? As you may realize, I can be technologically challenged….Thanks.

  5. So true I watch my weather daily sometimes hourly 😝 I’m in California Central Valley our weather is whacky!

  6. Good morning from South Central Alabama. I was just getting ready to purchase this exact same weather station, so I went ahead and pulled the trigger and purchased it off Amazon from your YouTube channel that way I get what I want you make a little extra and we're both happy.

  7. I installed a simple temperature sensor near my garden. It keeps track of the temperature throughout the day and graphs it for you. I was shocked that the forecasted temperatures were way off compared to the actual temperature. This is super vital. Overwintering the flowers that I planted in fall.

  8. My “climate” is cool wet springs, harsh drought summers damp frosty falls and cloudy biting winters. My “weather” changes every 5 minutes in South Carolina. It can be sunshine and 75 and in a few minutes it will be windy and cloudy.
