#fbf April 2020 ⏩ May 2018: If you don’t read past this line, you’ll just think “wow, he’s good with plants.” But read on to understand how this whole plant care thing works:

Plant: Davallia fejeensis (Rabbit’s Foot Fern)

Humidity: Misting? Never. Humidifier? Nope. My hygrometer hovers around 20% in the winter months and 40-70% through spring/summer/fall depending the weather (yes, outdoor humidity affects indoor humidity – you don’t live in a sealed box)

Watering: planting medium is purely sphagnum moss; pot has no drainage hole. Whenever I notice the moss is nearly totally dry, I run it under tap water, get it completely soaked, wait a few minutes, then carefully turn the whole thing upside down to drain the excess water.

Fertilizer: I dissolve some 3-1-2 granules into a watering can and pour that into the planting medium whenever I see new fronds growing.

Leaf turnover rate: I’ve observed 2 or 3 fronds dropping off each month, which to me, is an acceptable rate of leaf drop. If you plant is consistently getting thinner it’s probably because…

***LIGHT***: part of its life was spent right in front of a shaded west facing window, 100-300 foot-candles most of the day, then 1000-1600 fc when the sun came into line of sight with the shading material in the afternoon, which lasted 1-2 hours. In the recent months after moving to our new place, it now lives on a shelf a few feet from the windows of the solarium so I put some grow lights on it yielding 400-450 fc, which stay on for 4-6 hours a day (I don’t have them on a timer but since we’re always home, we just turn them on manually each day – it’s a great way to be mindful about seeing how your plants are doing).
