Art In The Garden with Lorie Van Werden – Garden America Podcast & Radio Show [3.9.24]

In this episode, we chat with our guest, Lorie Van Werden shares the innovative journey of West of the Wind, a company that originated in 2007 with a focus on producing photographic prints on canvas for indoor home décor.

Lorie highlighted the company’s strategic pivot with the market for indoor wall decor becoming saturated. This insight led to the pioneering development of giclee canvas prints designed specifically for outdoor use, tapping into the burgeoning trend of outdoor living spaces becoming essential extensions of the home.

The company has since expanded its collection to over 550 images in three sizes. These exquisite prints are available through local garden centers, patio and furniture stores, and catalog and website companies such as Gardener’s Supply, Kirkland’s, Wayfair, and Lamps Plus

Well well well here we go again we are ready and uh yes you are waiting for us I’m Brian M good morning John beg Nasco tigerella Fox it is Garden America and uh some of you saw a test we did about an hour ago uh making sure things worked

This weekend people were saying hey there’s no sound what’s going on that was just a test we are back live now and hopefully because of the fine work that tiger did this past week John we’re going to stay on the air here on Facebook live welcoming those on bis

Talk radio and uh thank you here we are gentlemen here we go start your engines start your engines is right yeah what do you what do you thank we on both ends you know we had issues with your uh your the telephone side of the end of the production board and different things

Like that we had issues with Facebook and connection updates and all that kind of stuff within the apps but I think we got it all resolved been working tirelessly through the week to make sure and due test a few people through the week might have noticed me putting up a

Bunch of blank black screen tests right like I would every once in a while see oh you’ve got a couple viewers or something like that well there there’s a few things that go on there’s the connection to Facebook then there’s the tablet yeah and then there are updates

That Facebook does but they don’t tell us then there’s updates to the tablet which delivers the show to Facebook and you don’t always know that either yeah so there’s a lot so thank you for your patience we are back we got the phones working in fact we called Our Guest

Earlier this morning yeah and checked out the phone lines yeah so she’ll be joining us again we have the same guest from last week I know we didn’t put it in the newsletter but uh you know we wanted to give the opportunity to have

Her back and you know be able to kind of do the show properly we going to talk about art in the garden right exactly lots of fun stuff with Lor um to talk about outdoor art and thanks to Carla for the prayers that’s what really worked that is true you know we’re on

The air because of uh the allmighty and Carla thank you so much that that is John’s biggest contribution for the technical aspect of our show is praying yeah that’s fine you know you I I worked on the in studio stuff you did the stuff on your end and John prayed yeah I had

To because Mark Zuckerberg would not take your calls tiger called all week yeah well you know why he wouldn’t take his calls it wasn’t because he has no idea who he is Mark knows who he is that’s why he didn’t take the call I’m blocked boy the

Uh I don’t think we could have had a better winter here in Southern California oh yeah right yeah for everything’s wet ready to grow grow uh shann and I were I think I told you last week walking to the mailbox and we saw monkey flowers in full bloom I’m glad

You said flowers flowers I hear we saw monkey flowers yeah I’m thinking you live in Fall Brook you’re thinking of Costa Rica you want to hear the Hower monkeys absolutely Costa Rica we leave on the 21st of April six more weeks um but you’re but you’re so right John in

The sense of you know we could talk about rain and the weather but the nice thing that we’ve had is we’ve had this sporadic rain which gives the ground a chance to actually absorb it and dry up a little bit between rain and then it wasn’t so hot that it completely dries

Up between the rains which has happened many times in and so you know we’ll take this kind of weather I mean even the other day it was like the perfect Southern California day where it rained at night you woke up and it was a partly cloudy beautiful day

The rest of the day and then I think it rained at night again and and you know we’ll take that you know rain during the day is not always fun but at night not a problem I don’t want to complain but why change things right so um because the because we weren’t sure

What was going on with the show I was laid on the newsletter and I think for the second time in a row I forgot to let people know about the time change oh so at least in the newsletter so so what you’re saying is tomorrow it’ll be an

Hour later than it is right now yeah Sunday so tomorrow it’ll be 9:10 Sunday night or Sunday morning Sunday night well you have to set your alarm you got to get up at 2 o’cl and set your clocks ahead yeah don’t do it before you you’re

Going to lose an hour of sleep yeah but you know it’s so funny okay the only things that I ever have to change my clock on now are my oven and my microwave my car automatically does it my phone automatically does it Alexa does it you know everything else

Automatically does it the only thing that doesn’t do it is my phone or my microwave and my oven we’re in Dana and I are into clocks we love clocks there’s a clock in every room okay so we have to set those back and forth but yeah we

Have a clock in the living room the kitchen both bedrooms really yeah yeah where’s the clock just those dial yes old school love clocks okay you know what I say tick tock baby I I think that would have someone cleaning your clock BR hey um hey John I

Wanted to see time fly once you know you know what I did what I threw the clock out the window I don’t know I don’t know all right go ahead I I see Michelle’s on the line and I wanted to mention I got an email from Michelle as I was going over

My dozens of emails this week and um she asked if the rose formula that I had put out was still if I still used it and if it was still uh what she should use we haven’t talked about that for a while I know and I just wanted to let Michelle

Know I don’t personally use it because it’s not practical for over 1500 roses but if you’ve got less than a 100 roses yes Rochelle continue to use it and your roses will love you for that speaking of roses I bought uh this Tuesday will be two weeks since I bought a dozen roses

For Dana Oh I thought you going to say you bought another Rose Bush and that would have shocked me no no so florist roses and I told her I said these aren’t going to last as long as the normal bouet of just you know daisies and everything else right but you know if

You get a few days to a week be happy yeah they still look brand new we’re going on two weeks florist roses from Trader Joe’s oh florist roses are supposed to last longer than any roses but my luck usually like after a week they start to look a little peaked and

You start picking one out throwing them away leaves my uh I’m amazed my wife Janine is a is a is a sucker um and so the other day she was that like convenience sucker that’s going to say why she married you exactly she she was at the convenience

Store and on the way out the convenience store there was a a panhandle over there and I’m sure maybe they he had gotten some roses out of like the dumpster or something like that was selling them to people as they came out or something like that and she’s like okay fine so

She bought a few and so she tolds me tells me this on you know I see them sitting in our counter and just these little purple roses sitting there and so then that same day Chrysler Imperial had some beautiful blossoms so I cut some of

Them I put them in in the house as well so the Chrysler Imperials lasted maybe like you’re saying like four days maybe a week okay yeah and then the little ones that she got that were already practically spent when she got them from the panhandler they were still going

Strong they were still looking good days after I’d thrown out the Chrysler Imperial once and she’s like oh look at these roses you know she rubbed it in now they sprayed don’t aren’t they sprayed with something for elasticity as I say for those Flo roses they don’t put anything on those

Things no they’re bred florist roses are bred to have thicker petals than regular roses but I thought and because they have thicker petals they last longer you know because years ago my cat got into the Roses this goes back probably eight years was chewing on him

And then he had his his throat sounded funny his started coughing and his his purring sounded like an aquarium pump and so I took him to the vet and then Sharon told me well yeah they treat those florist roses with something and that’s maybe like just pesticides and

Stuff like that in general no what Sharon might have been talking about was the um solution they put in the water to make them laugh yeah yeah that was yeah and to this day our cat who’s still alive it’s banded he’s 15 or 16 his purse still sounds like an aquarium pump

But his his meow came back because for a while it was like meow meow I’m like I’m like dude are you possessed and then so we we took him to the vet and they put a scope down there and he had some irritation in his throat yeah the Thorns have a hard

Time digesting they catching your so there’s our cat Ro story John we’ve got a quote today by Helen Hayes which seemed familiar have we used this quote before by Helen maybe but if we have it’s time toing I this quote was I wasn’t sure if

We were having a guest but I thought it fit and I have a Helen Hayes Rose at home and I had just pruned it when I wrote this wow so Helen said All Through The Long Winter I dream of my garden on the first day of spring I dig my fingers

Deep into the soft Earth I can feel its energy and my spirit sore that’s a great that is a great quote I feel like that too right those of us that garden and get our our fingers dirty can certainly identif we talked about the bacteria that’s in the soil and how it physically

Can help you the good bacteria yeah I just uh you know absorbing it through your skin the other thing that can’t help you is the time changing it throws off your circadium Rhythm right I mean there’s an increase in heart attacks as the time changes oh my goodness I

Remember turned our clocks back going into winter and I had a hard time adjusting to that I’m think well I should have the extra hour I should be and then I remember that John likes to you like to keep those hours I used to save my hours he would save them so he

Would have to go through that till you need it right so like but now there’s nothing you can do now no you can’t save it because you’re losing it yeah you can’t save it because you’re losing it that’s going to be our theme today hey

With that in mind we’re going to take a break for our good friends on bis talk radio welcome bis talk this is last week’s show when we come back on the other side as they say in radio and TV we’re going to be talking to our guest

Lori who was supposed to be with us last week and she’s with us this week talk about art in the garden we fixed the phones you got the restraining order and art can’t go in your garden anymore but for talk about that all right back after these messages thank you for joining us

Right here on bis talk radio alrighty welcome back to Garden America thank you for sitting through that break as we continue it is the weekend uh perhaps you’re listening to us at some other time that’s great too we’ll talk about all the ways you can listen and

Watch Garden America but in the meantime tiger and John Lori is back with us so kind so patient we’ve waited a week she is back ready to go so let’s get into this tiger yeah so this morning we have Lori Van Wen joining us from west of the

Wind a company that originated in 2007 to bring photographic art into your garden by putting them on uh canvases and using inks and colors that would withstand the weather the elements the Sun and all of that stuff so that way you know when we talk about these

Outdoor rooms just like any room in your home you have the ability to bring in some art you know sometimes you have an area where the plants just aren’t enough and you want to incorporate some art while west of the wind has made that an option Lori thank you for joining us

Thank you for being patient with us and uh rejoining us this morning yeah thanks for having me guys and I’m appreciative for Carla’s prayers because OB obiously has worked exactly you know what I thought Lori might you know be kind of sneaky and after your introduction she would have been

Silent exactly just to give us a little bit of a heart attack very stressful make make us nervous you bet hey so so so Lori tell us um a little bit about your uh story here and then we’ll get into the west of the wind story yeah so

My story is I sell for Sue we met at a garden trade show and um she liked me and I liked her in that product and so we um I started selling for her um to the the um garden centers uh patio and furniture stores uh catalog companies websites Etc so and so

Did you start back in 2007 or did you come along later yeah so I’ve been with her for nine years um yeah so um but it’s just it’s it’s fantastic product and it’s it kind of sells itself at the shows because it is so beautiful and colorful and there’s just so many looks

And um styles that that you can purchase um so originally when I started with her there was a lot of photographs so there were um a lot of uh you know just like pictures of a cobblestone street in Italy or a window sill in Paris with flowers on it or uh

A landscape of you know the sea with the Cliffs of Italy or something so it was a lot of Photography and then what we noticed a as the years went on is we offered both arti artist paintings watercolors and that sort of look but also uh the photography and what was

Happening were the the consumers were more looking and buying and purchasing the artwork so the paintings and um so that just spurred Sue on to then start to license with all these um USA artists um she has over 30 that she um contracts with and licenses with and then we um

Use their artwork for these um watercolor or these um UV protected canvas okay prints so so now let’s kind of talk a little bit about that you know um maybe the the interesting part of this is you know people are sitting there thinking oh that’s a great idea

Incorporate you know some kind of painting some kind of photograph into your landscape seems like an easy no-brainer once you really think about it but you know canvas prints sunlight weather you know you can’t just do that with with any normal canvas any normal photo because it’ll just fade and you

Know begin to disintegrate right so so your guys’s product is specifically made to be outdoor right right so the um the proprietary lacquer that that she came up with uh is so the the canvas is actually UV protected on both the front and the back and then it is stretched

Over a polyvinyl um it’s almost like a the frame but it’s the same materials that the windows uh in your home are made of so it’s very you know durable and it’s not going to warp most most canvases are wrapped over wood which obviously if it’s left out in the in the

Environment it’s going to it’s going to warp so then when the canvas is stretched over these polyvinyl frames we staple it with um stainless steel staples so that’s not going to rust and then there’s Hardware mechanism that is also stainless that won’t rust now most of the wall art that you outdoor wall

Art that you see if you type in outdoor wall art in any you know Google search most of it is metal and you know that’s great and that’s you know a fun look to put metal um outside but eventually it’s going to rust and it’s it could potentially damage your

Wall or you know leave rust streaks on your wall so that’s what I love about this product is you can add that pop of color and that that interest to your outdoor areas and it’s not going to damage your walls at all I didn’t even yeah so that’s that’s the good thing

About this and and also there’s so many Siz that you can purchase like we have 24 in square we have 30 by 40 um 30 in x 40 in vertical or horizontal and then we also have 24 by 48 vertical or horizontal which allows you to use these in

Different you know depending on how much room you have uh in the outdoor setting that you’re putting it in um you there’s lots to choose from okay and so you know that is such a a a neat thing when it comes to like technically I didn’t even

Think about putting a you know frame on a wall you know you’re going to have rust marks or you’re going to have problems down the road because I mean you know you you don’t realize those until you take that off you’re like oh wait a minute now my walls all messed up

And I have to either repaint it rucco it you know kind of go from there with uh different issues that you may have when it comes to the wall art um right now you know the now let’s kind of talk about about you know ideas um you know

Obviously an outdoor room an outdoor environment you know you’re going to have a theme you’re going to have colors that you have incorporated into this area um just like any living room that you know or or room that you have in your home you you guys are saying now

You can incorporate art into this area right correct yeah so um we’ve had customers who put them on fence lines you know if you’ve got uh if you’re living in Suburbia Ville and you’ve got you know the fenced in backyard um what a beautiful way to just add interest to

Those plane uh fences uh to put these beautiful works of art on the wood fences so it’s just a way to bring interest to that area that would normally just be kind of dull um and then there’s you can put them on fence lines you can put them on uh outdoor

Like she sheds and all those little you know potting sheds that people have in their yards um sides of uh external buildings porches these also work well indoors for really sunny areas where um I know when you have prints and things in in like sun rooms and other areas like that that are

Exposed to a lot of light they will you know fade really quickly um so these serve the purpose there for sunny areas inside the home as well and also you know kind of like damp areas like if you know you want to put one in your bathroom and it’s it’s you know gets

Damp in there you won’t have to worry about any anything like that happening to the print so okay these also work inside but they’re great for outside and Sue does an excellent job of selecting the artist and the colors and the look um to just match any outdoor decor hey

Hey Lori we’re gonna have to take a quick break when we get back we’ll continue chatting with Lori Van weren with west of the wind art of course do stay with us those on Facebook live any questions comments for Lori or one of us Post it right there on our Facebook page

Those on bis talk radio going to take a break for our sponsors by the way Today’s Show brought To Us by the good Folks at ferone we hope you’ll support them ferle and garden America back after these messages with our friends and from your friends too on bis talk radio

You are tuned in to Garden America Brian M John Basco tiger pel Fox here with you every weekend most every weekend thank you for joining us as we continue this morning talking about art with Lori and again back to you tigers as we continue and again those on Facebook live any

Questions be sure to post them right there on our Facebook page tiger yeah please um you know I do see some uh um chatter happening on our Facebook Chat feature people talking to each other good and so we will monitor it for um uh questions and Carla does say

That’s a great idea always have had a problem with art and photos fading even in the house so you know as Lori mentioned you know people say oh this is outdoor art but if you have that sun room or you have that very well-lit room that you’re like oh these paintings or

These photos that I have um always fading this seems like a product that would also work well for you now um Lori real quick do you guys do any custom uh printing of four people or is this something strictly that you know you guys have a select uh series of artists

Like series of photos that you guys released great question we get that question all the time at all the industry trade shows that we uh show at and it’s all you know based on quantity these are made in China so it’s all quantity based so if you I if you have

Something like where you own a string of hotels let’s say and you have a certain look that you’re going for and you want this certain canvas that you want to hang on all of your if if it’s based on quantity yeah we can work with you and

Get that printed for you and then you can put them up at your um business yeah um so it’s it’s all based on quantity we wouldn’t do like a oneoff kind of thing but yeah there’s just so many different um we have over 500 50 images right now

Currently in the line so I mean we can we can work you you’ll find something that will be exactly what you’re what you’re looking for in your outdoor setting okay or indoor yeah perfect or you know if you want to give out 400 Christmas gifts oh there you go there

You go maybe maybe that’s something they can do for you but but you know um in the and sold my chain of hotels because I would have been able to take advantage of this everybody’s listening and they have a chain of hotels you know yeah I don’t

Want to interrupt but I guess I am uh lla and po wants to know uh what type of Staples they were that um we were talking stainless steel staples stainless steel staples attaches the um the canvas to the polyvinyl frame ah thank you and you know when when we’re

Talking about this idea you know we we’ve talked about our homes a number of times on this program Lori where where I live where John lives where where Brian lives Brian has you know a patio an enclosed patio and you know Wonderful setting I think for this CU he’s got you

Know three walls basically and you know on any one of the walls he can put you know some art like this and have it be a backdrop you know to his plants backdrop to his Fountain you know John you know out there in Fall Brook has a wonderful

Covered back porch back patio um that you know has ample wall space but then he also has these setting environments with wood structures out in his landscape that almost like you can just hang this up almost freestanding as as a piece of art out there in the landscape right so you know

You mentioned having a wall having a fence but you know this might be kind of neat to put in an arbor and have it hanging down with some chain or some wire as you know being in an outdoor environment right right yeah for sure yeah that’s a great idea actually and

Then if you got the same size print and you wanted two different looks you could hang you know because if if your prola or wherever you’re hanging this from is two-sided you know you could put two of the same size prints back to back yeah hang them and have you know two

Different looks from two different angles so um yeah it there’s just so many um ways to utilize this art and I actually have one that I have on my deck um in michig I live in Michigan um that is still you know for this is going to

Be my fifth season with the print and it still looks the same as it did when I when I bought it so um it there is a two-year guarantee uh against fading so should a customer purchase one at their you know local Furniture patio store uh Garden Center wherever they’re buying it

From and they have an issue um we just were very good about you know standing behind our product and um you know warranting that for two years obviously anything that’s out in the sun for long enough will eventually fade there’s nothing that you know you I don’t care

If you had the strongest lacquer in the world it’s you know eventually going to fade so but I think that you’ll grow maybe grow tired of the print and want to refresh it with something new before it will fade enough to where you it doesn’t look good and you have to

Replace it yeah definitely I mean as you say Trends in the trends in your home trends in the landscape yeah probably are something that change quick more quickly than this art will change um yes you want to hit that question real quick uh H can can you purchase it directly

From the website that question is that the one um yeah so where do you drive does not sell direct to Consumer um we have many places first of all check with your local Garden Center um and if they don’t have it by all means tell them

They should stock it because that is the thing with this product is anybody who is into gardening is into their outdoor and making it beautiful and so we just are such the perfect accessory for anybody that’s a gardener so we always um you know obviously check your local

Garden Center um there’s patio and furniture stores that stock our products we also have catalog companies and websites like Gardener Supply Kirklands Wayfair Lamps Plus those are all uh examples of customers where you can find a a pretty sizable bread of our line on their on their in their locations and in

Their cataloges and websites yeah so I yeah and I know that you know at our Nursery in Mission Hills we have some of their artwork too that is for sale there at Mission Hills Nursery but yeah like she said check the local garden centers but a big selection probably going to be

Online because yeah as you say l 500 options for prints um you know it’s very rare that a probably Garden Center brick and mortar is going to have all 500 options in different sizes as well like maybe they can offer online hey um Lori

I was going to ask you you know and I’m sure this is probably very difficult for you but with 500 prints is there kind of a favorite for you I mean you say you have had one on your back uh patio for a series of years I mean is there a

Favorite one that you got out there right now well the one that I have is the hummingbird and it’s called Ambrosia and it’s just a beautiful painting of a hummingbird um that one is a is a top seller um but we also have so many beautiful florals and

Landcapes and um butterflies and um there’s some really cool ones that if anybody’s Into Horses um there’s some really beautiful paintings of horses now so the the and a lot of coastal a lot of the coastal scenes are really really awesome too there’s just I mean when you

Walk into our booth at a trade show I mean it’s just it’s it’s so beautiful just to look at I don’t know why everyone just doesn’t put this in their stores because it not only makes their stores look good but the people will buy them because they are just so so

Beautiful and they just bring so much color and interest yeah to an otherwise kind of dull and lifeless area you know beyond you know nice furniture and a really cool pillow and maybe a nice throw rug um this is a really nice way to add just a lot of interest and like

You say not just that but I mean also it take carees of some of the issues that you may have when you you know even when people hang up those metal art uh pieces you know on a wall you know and and it’s wonderful outdoor art that you know is

Metal and you know it’s been cut and you know maybe powder coated or something still sometimes that will either begin to rust and then it leaves marks on your wall or you know the the system that you use to hang it up could you know rust or

Fade or begin to break down over time time which then creates issues as well um so you know this solves the that issue a little bit of being able to kind of have something on the wall and not have the wall get messed up later on um

Right and the these are true all weather and people ask us all the time well you know what if I put this right outside where it’s raining and the snow and all the other effects of weather and it just they are all weather so you truly can

Put them outside in the rain uh and all the other elements that um Mother Nature provides so um yeah you shouldn’t be afraid of of putting this in you know places where you would never think you could yeah you know one idea that I had when you were talking about being there

In Michigan with your art is what a what a great way and and this might be going a little over the top but I figure people people up there where it snows many months out of the year if you had it somewhere where you can see it from

Your house house and then you could keep the snow off of it like a melting system or something that you look out in your yard and you know with with everything else being white put some heaters around it yeah you know and you have this beautiful piece of art just sitting out

There you know in the midst of this uh you know blanket of white that’d be pretty neat hey hey Lori we’re GNA have to take another break when we get back from the break we’ll wrap up chatting with Lori with west of the wind art and talking about how to utilize outdoor art

In any environment you Bena thank thank you for tuning in those on bis talk radio those on Facebook live again probably just one more segment with Lori and then top of the news for our friends on bis talk radio so questions comments on Facebook live make sure to get them

In uh during this uh segment coming up until then we’re going to take a break after these messages from bis talk radio and great sponsors including ferum we are back from the break hope you had a good break those on bis talk those on Facebook live thank you uh for tuning in

By the way this is the final segment of hour number one for those tuned in on bis talk radio news coming up top of the hour we come back at 6 minutes after hopefully you can catch at least one or both hours on bis talk radio tiger yeah

So we have a few comments uh here Lori number one um you know it’s funny we mentioned large quantities we’ve got Frank that mentioned uh hotelier here listening in so um you know Frank uh if you’re looking for some outdoor art or or art for your hotel there you go and I

Wonder what hotel and where Frank is yeah so you know there’s there’s one connection there and whether or not we could get a commission on the sale yeah um yeah no that’s great just um contact you know go to West ofthe wind.com and just uh do a contact us and

Let us know where you’re at and what you’re interested in and we’ll work with you uh to supply your hotel with some beautiful prints and that was westof thee wind.com westof the wind yeah west of the wind.com yeah yep um they have cheaper prices at East of the wind but

They fall apart in a week yeah they don’t there’s no two-year guarantee no no um and then Tanya um this doesn’t have anything to do with Lor at the moment but we were talking about changing clocks Lori because uh you know time changes coming tonight and she has

27 clocks to change every time and so she is uh frustrated with that as well terrible um and then Lori um you know one thing you know Lenor mentioned maybe it helped to hang in a shady location to help against feing oh yeah for sure I mean it doesn’t you

Don’t have to have it out in the in the weather um and obviously ly it’s going to you know stay brighter longer if it’s under like a porch area or it’s not in direct sunlight all the time or it is in a shady area for sure yeah definitely um

Does you know make the the vi vibrant colors stay vibrant um for longer when it’s in a shady location for sure now I will say though and this was something that did uh strike my comment when um she mentioned that is you know one of the issues with shap

Areas of a landscape you can’t trust them yes right um is is it’s sometimes very difficult to bring color into those environments right a lot of plants you know a lot of plants don’t produce flowers in the shade it’s always greens and it’s always kind of dark or the

Flowers that bloom in those areas are not blooming for long periods of time so now what a great way to incorporate a little bit of color a little bit of light color because you can control it right I mean look or you can you can

Pick a a a bright painting you can pick something that’s going to give some pop in a shady area of the garden that normally it’s very hard to do with plants in that in that kind of environment um what do you what do you kind of think about that yeah no that’s

Definitely uh that’s the thing about these is that there’s there’s certain areas that where you do need color that you really I mean most of the people like I said before they their outdoor furniture maybe just a muted not neutral tone and then they color with you know

Decorative pillows or you know a strong color in a pillow or something or a rug but this is just a way to bring it to a lot of other areas where you normally you know don’t see a lot of color or potential for color but the trends are you know still booming with

Outdoor uh decorating your outdoor I mean it did that just we we saw of course in 2020 uh when the world shut down our business just exploded and it’s because of you know people just realizing oh gosh I’m going to be stuck at home uh let’s let’s make the outdoor

Area where we we have um you know we’re eating dinner and things like that and hanging out just to look a little better so yeah we we had a huge surgery and it just continues to grow like the the um growth that we’ve seen in the last five

Five years is just has continued to increase so I don’t think this is going away anytime soon because I think people do want to accessorize their outdoor spaces and and bring interest in color and and this product just is a great way to do it and you know the other thing as

I’m kind of prising your catalog here online is also the ability to incorporate maybe a color um that you really want in your patio in your outdoor landscape that is sometimes difficult to incorporate with just plants right like if you if you’re like oh I want orange orange yeah there’s a

Lot of orange flowers out there but maybe where you live those orange flowers don’t do well or those orange flowers are only in the spring but now you can kind of have it year round right correct yeah yeah no it’s it’s great because you can select a lot of the

Webites you know that have these prints on there they they sort by color so if you typed in you know you want a teal or a bright blue or you know whatever color you’re trying to accessorize with uh usually those prints will you know come

Up into view so that you can um choose that to to make that color happen yeah um I’m building an Adu right now in the backyard of my home Lori and we incorporated these um uh stained glass Iris windows in there so I’m going to

Have to I’m going to have to see if there’s also some Iris flower uh painting canvas that I can maybe incorporate into the new Adu as well we’ll go from there um yeah Hey so uh we gave we put the website as a link online um again check with local garden centers

Or local retailers to try to find something in your area but otherwise online is a great resource for it um lots of great information about the product Lorry anything else you want to cover before uh we let you go okay yeah I mean if you’re just if you’re looking

For something to accessorize your outdoor spaces with this this outdoor canvas wall art from west of the wind is is the place to it’s it’s the thing to go to oh hey real quick is there any notes for people that maybe a frame you know for these canvases like I mean is

There anything tips that you might be able to give people for that you as far as framing them yeah uh well because they’re wrapped canvas there really is no frame okay but they could obviously build a frame around that I would think I I’m not really um skilled in that kind

Of knowledge so I don’t really know how that would work but I’m sure somebody who is very crafty could do that okay perfect well thank you very much for joining us Lori have a great rest of the weekend and uh we’ll talk again soon okay sounds good thanks so much bye bye

Great thank you Lori lot of interest very very good you know who knew yeah you know Frank the hotelier that made the comment on Facebook says that it should also work for apartments and HOA settings very true as well right um in in in those settings you know they’re

Always trying to incorporate a a good environment you know whether they have Courtyards or or different things like that okay we’ve got uh we’re up against the clock in terms of bis Talk Radio in news coming up we return on bis talk radio 6 minutes after for those of you

Now available would you like to hear it and she sounds just like that you know our listeners always have such great ideas Lisa mentions what about hospitals oh yeah yeah yeah like you could have a picture of every organ as you walk down oh gosh hey um I wanted to where’ we give

Him that’s what I want to know for the first time in a in many many years I planted something in my yard without even knowing how it grew or where it had to grow okay that whole Jack and the beanock thing it’s just a story John no

This was um you know sometimes you think you know what you’re doing cuz you’ve been doing it for 50 years yeah turns out you don’t did you read the newsletter at all about did you know this week I talked about Iris nada I did NADA yeah there’s no no Iris

Okay do you know do you sell Iris Nat I don’t think so okay it’s a it’s a cross between uh a SI Siberian Iris and another species that came was developed here in California I think and maybe maybe the 50s or 60s uhhuh but it is it’s a shade Iris and I

I just assume all irises grow in the Sun and I picked one up at the Huntington Botanical Garden sale which I think is coming up in April and and I planted it and it kind of yellows in the the sun it probably would prefer shade but it

Spreads by underground ryom o and it blooms starts to bloom this time of year in dozens and dozens of flowers on on panicles that come out yeah did it already spread for you yeah only one year and it’s already spread well and not only is it already spreading it’s

Like from where I put in the main plant I saw a new shoot coming up I put it at the base of the Hill uhuh it’s coming up like probably 2 feet up the hill oh wow so that’s an aggressive spreader huh yeah yeah but I I’m just shocked at the

Number of flowers and it’s really T it’s less than knee high okay so no I mean I’m expecting it to be only six inches but you’re saying almost two feet are you talking about just the leaves or with the flower the flower stems come up about kneehigh wow that’s bigger than I

Thought but the uh the leaves kind of arch over and they’re probably less than a foot I like the way you worked in you know Soda Pop and kni John that was good all all in one discussion very good you you were a fan of knei for a long time

You know what’s interesting is kni grape or knei orange I don’t think that knei is a California oh really soda but but when I was a kid there was a Mexican restaurant we used to go to called Oldtown tamali Factory in Oldtown here in San Diego and they sered kni and I

Think I probably liked strawberry really or whatever was red whatever I like I like how John just asked you grape or orange and then you say strawberry yeah because it was red but but I remember that’s we talked about this before the number one or one

Of the top selling uh soda brands in Michigan was fago you know and their commercial was always which way did he go which way did he go he went for f go but um uh there’s the commercial where the kid wants to order a pop soda pop

And the uh the waiter says well what kind of you want he lists like 20 flavors and the first one that he listed was red pop and then after 20 kid go all have a red pop always the red yep sounds fun Tiger’s or uh Brian’s like a kid at

Heart so do you want to answer Dell’s question John what do we got yeah what are your thoughts on pre-emergent after weeding you know my thoughts would be depends on the area if you have Acres I would say I don’t know if it’s going to work but if

You have certain beds um I I don’t know do they still make the product a maze or is there a new one NOP there’s there’s and do maybe ferti has one too I don’t know but pre-emergence last a long time you’re looking at what up to four months

Six months yeah exactly I I’m a full fan of pre-emergent kind of you know anytime just from the standpoint of being able to control some weed growth in beds um because you know especially after rains it can kind of get out of hand I was

Going to say yeah right and if you let those weeds go to flow and then they go to seed again you’re just going to have this problem over and over again where if you use pre-emergence regularly you decrease the amount of seed weed growth in your garden which will just

Make it easier later on to weed the Garden or control weeds in the garden um and the only time that it’s kind of a downfall is if you’re ever trying to have a wild flower area or you like you know some sometimes like for instance my landscape I got California poppies that

I love to just let come up that was the Isaac project yeah yeah and just let them go well if I throw down pre-emergence my you know California poppies will not be coming up so you kind of you know working that balance but if your landscape isn’t a seed

Annual landscape with flowers then you know pre-emergents are good to go and I know some people are um are overboard on using Organics and they so they want organic weed killers and they want to use uh uh vinegar and things like that oh yeah um and corn gluten is a

Pre-emergence but it doesn’t last as long as the others so if you use corn gluten you’re you’re probably I mean you might be lucky to get a month if that yeah and depending on like you’re saying the weather so it yeah and so it has to

Be re reapplied but there is an organic way to do it if you if you’re into that Brian yeah gluten-free Gardens John um oh I do want to mention before I forget though for those of you in San Diego uh right now at micho’s Nursery tomato Mania is happening starting today what

Today is the day today is the day so thousands I no warning for this wish I would have known what’s new for my patio wall this year tiger you know what I’ve been so busy this week that I have not had a chance to kind of pru the what

Whatever you come up with and then we’ll see how how I’ll be on Sunday though I’ll be there on Sunday yeah you got tiger to supply all your plants for you now no no no my tomato he’s my tomato connection and you got me starting to to uh bring you

Food hey you know oh yeah thank you for the eggs John brought his chicken eggs in this morning to which tiger said well I can give you you some too I don’t think we have to go back to the store anymore for eggs between the both of you

Well you John just saved you 40 bucks right now basally yeah Dana’s gonna love that when we get home yeah um anyway so we do have uh Daniel Web Master put up the link or was that you that was Daniel Daniel yeah to uh uh the events happening tomato Mania tomato Mania John

You got a question here Mania uh do you see it I’m yeah I’m digging up some roses to put in pots because of weed abatement Pro project what can I give them to help their success I think I have a na Iris had it so long I couldn’t

Remember the name of the plant um so some notes about transplanting from the ground into pots I I would say that you know roses are pretty easy to grow anyway but if you want a foolproof soil if you use the ocean Forest that has the fertilizers

Mixed into it so if you use the the ocean forest and then um at planning time uh just water that in with HB 101 I I think that’ll be fine now let me ask you this regarding that John because you know this is we’re getting in Southern California getting into that weird time

Of year where you know the roses are coming out of dormy you know for those that actually went dormant um and they’re starting to grow is there is there a really bad time year to do that meaning because they’re growing right now they came out of sleep and they are

Starting to grow is that worse than if they were May and June you know and they’re fully growing or no it’s kind of like yeah they’re tough and they can kind of handle anything well it depends where you are if you’re in the summer and it’s hot yeah roses kind of go

Dormant then right you know weo dormant yeah so you probably could move them but the absolute best time to move roses would be between probably between January and now right so uh Carl is in Huntington Beach so she’s on the coast and uh her season’s a little bit more delayed

Because it’s cooler than Inland so I would say you know another two weeks to dig the Roses up is no problem at all we’re going to take a break real quick hang on to any thoughts you may have or we’ll have we have to take a break for

Our our good friends we say good friends because they are bis talk radio thank you so much today once again sponsored by fertile stay with us back after Biz talk radio breaks and Facebook live yeah we’re coming right back stay with us we have returned the mics are hot we

Are back Facebook live bis talk radio good to have you along as we checked things out that tomato Mania happening starting today Mission Hills Nursery for those in San Diego the iris is white with markings it’s in the newsletter if you get the newsletter yeah there’s a

Picture of it in the newsletter yes it’s in the newsletter or if you Google Iris NADA uh you can you know see images of it for sure but you can also find out where to buy it since Iris nothing huh or or if you Google that while you’re in

Sp in Mexico nothing will pop up exactly Irish nothing that’s exactly right just type in Iris and N shows up okay um hey so um you know it’s funny I I am posting as myself in the comments because I tried to post as Garden America and it

Won’t let me do it you know I’ll tell you why some update you did it’s got to be the Facebook tablet update it kicked me out of uh being able to post from garden America but least sorry sorry about that they’re getting your posts and a nice picture of you and your

Family looks like there it’s kind of small right So Good Times um if you are a rose grower interested in growing roses uh one of the Facebook groups I belong to is ashrose chat and um Teresa buyington uh hosts a podcast and I’m going to be on her

Podcast I think in a couple weeks talking about the auction coming up now it’s going to be live people are going to want to know where to go how to find it what time all that I think that uh it’s recorded and then um posted a week

Later but we’ll have you’ll have the information for all those people that are just dying yeah when I find out for sure on another podcast I’m just talking about nothing but roses nothing not not our roses all roses all such a smile right now for that roses make me happy

Whenever we whenever we give him a show that he can just talk roses Lenor posted that the color orange makes her happy she read somewhere tiger yeah John I need to send you a picture I keep forgetting of the uh Australian Bottle Tree oh yeah goodness gracious that

Sucker tall well it’s stretching to find the sun in your patio it’s uh no you know what there’s a lot there’s a lot to be said there still getting Shadows but uh what about the trunk is it uh swelling yet it should bulb out I have to take a

Look at that I will take a picture and let you decide now what’s interesting you might need to you might need to uh cut the top off if you want it to Branch out a little bit actually no because in my patio I like the way it’s going

Straight but here’s the thing so it grows and about maybe 2 feet it it you know branches out and then there’s nothing for another two or three feet and then at the top it branches out yeah that’s why I was saying if you cut it

Back if you wanted to fill I will send you a picture or a small video and then you can advise me on what you think the best course of action would be yeah now you said Bottle Tree uh for the for our listeners but I know you prefer to call it brachia cut

Rupestris yeah but you know what I can spell that backwards Brach kiten I’ve always thought brachio kiten remind me of a dinosaur yeah a Brachiosaurus yeah right Brach like brosaurus Brachiosaurus I guarantee I always thought Brau kitens were maybe something like a dinosaur tree there’s probably nobody within what

50 miles that has that tree that Australian Bottle Tree no is that how common is that it’s not as Comm there’s a brachia kite and um what’s the other one populum uh-huh the one that has the Spear shaped Leaf yeah that’s like well is it spear shaped yeah isn’t it from the popler

Like it’s a popler leaf yeah pop leaves aren’t spear shaped yeah they are they’re like kind of like pointed Oh you mean like like uh Shield a of Spades type shei yes yes okay yeah spear I think of long oh okay no no no I’m thinking I’m thinking like Ace of Spades

Type shoes yeah yes okay um but Brian the one thing you got to remember you say 50 miles the one thing that you got to remember is that you have probably some of the the most diverse tree Selections in the world right where we’re at where we have the San Diego Zoo

San Diego wild animal park you know Balboa Park you’ve got the quail San Diego Botanical Gardens that we have such a cool selection of trees in our area guess I should rephrase that like from a personal level not from a public or a park or the zoo but like

Anybody in their backyard or patio whatever well I would say definitely you have something unique for your HOA want to make it really personal within four houses of you it’s very unique what we need are more eucalyptus trees in the area exactly if any of our

Listeners are in the LA area or you want to drive up to the LA AR bitum they have some mature bottle Tre and you’ll if you’re walking by them you you’re going to stop and go oh my gosh Is that real yeah yeah it’s really neat to see some of the tree selection

You know it’s funny I was talking to a guy this week uh they had to take down a uh carrotwood tree they had to take down a carrotwood tree and they want to put up a new tree to create some privacy they’re on the coast down here in uh

Southern California and so looking for some options and you know it’s always the you know we want something not not very messy you know grow growes fast you know it only gets a certain height I’m like all right please stop because I I’m not going to satisfy that right now so

Let’s just not even talk about those things because whatever grows fast is going to be messy whatever is Evergreen is going to be messy I used to when I worked with your dad at Nursery land the customers would always sounds like uh the requests have not change but they

Would come in asking for something you know that would grow fast but not get too tall and right we had a sales person who would say oh this is what you want this grows really fast as six feet stops it never grows after that pickes

Up its own mess yeah if it’s going to grow fast it’s going to be messy and it’s not going to stop growing it’s going to keep growing yeah but you can top it that’s up to you well that’s what Hedges are I mean they’re meant to be pruned sure yeah exactly

I guess that’s it I’m kiding we have we have two more segments after this we’re we’re well uh well into the show and uh enough ahead yeah you know um I I know I talk about this too much but you know I’m trying to fill up everything on take care of everything on

My bucket list and this year there were some things I wanted to do and it’s already too late like we missed might be going on this weekend the Orchid show and Santa Barbara and I think we were had planned on going to that didn’t we we talked about it and it started

Yesterday we didn’t do that and tiger and I were talking about going to the Philadelphia Flower Show we talked about it we missed that we tal we got Costa Rica coming up you know that’s that’s a huge trip hey Rick’s got a question Rick says last week he tried to ask the

Question this week he’s trying again the question is how far out should you start your veggie seeds should you count back from your last fost or freeze well yes yeah absolutely he’s an Idaho and it depends what it is but yeah you need to know how long it takes to

Germinate before you can put something out so there’s websites if you Google last frost date you can uh put in your zip code and it will tell you when the average last frost date is for your area yeah and it’ll even go so far as to say definitely will not freeze after this

Date but up until then it’s a possibility okay we’re going to take a break we’ve got two more segments coming up our next segment is one of the longer ones and then we’ve got a short break closing the show so do stay with us Facebook live Biz talk radio again keep

Those questions comments coming on Facebook live this is Garden America I’m Brian Maine John beg nasar tiger palifox having a good time on your weekend do stay with us as we just keep on growing all righty we are back from that break thank you to Stephanie and her team at

Bis talk radio keeping us on the the year each and every week doing a great job as people nationally can pick us up on the bis talk radio network and of course Facebook live we are all over the world gentlemen yes we uh we are big in

Sri Lanka I do know that and I think parts of Fairbanks and Modesto tuned in this morning you know I always forget you know that um we used to be on in Salon yeah and now the names changed to Sri Lanka and yeah Patagonia so we were we were in

Bombay uh of course you know twice in the last year and a half I’ve been on an airplane and S sat next to someone who had just been in within the last couple months to Patagonia and they love it right it’s the new new place to go yeah

Uh speaking of all around the world and things we’ve forgotten and not made but now is an opportun opportunity to make that up I do want to say at the San Diego Botanical Garden May 4th through the 27th is their uh world of orchids

Event so no why don’t we do a show from there yeah we got to talk to our friend John Clemens and see if we can uh do a world of orchids show we’re g to be in no no that would be the weekend after we

Get back we get back on the 29th no but it’s May 4th through the 27th right meaning well we could do any any two weekends probably after that yeah exactly so there’s plenty we should we should you know what I think that would be good yeah that’s kind of a neat

Program that they do where they have classes they have vendors different orchids are coming coming in at a bloom when I was at the Huntington in their Orchid area the one thing that I was just so you know intrigued about is they have a whole Greenhouse that’s

Like a backstock of orchids and when they come into bloom they bring them out into their public viewing area and then when they go out of Bloom they put them back in the back let them regroup and reform a bloom and then so so you just always think they’re in bloom

Really so that’s the thing with the world of orchid too is that they kind of always are having these plants out there that are in bloom so you just get to see such a variety of orchids and um one of my projects this summer is because I’m

Tired of um buying orchids and then having them fail and then just go byy keep buying them right yeah like I just bring them in the house and then they kind of like they do their thing and then I try to take care of them for a minute but I’m not motivated because

They don’t have a flower and then they end up dying right but I’m going to create it does take longer than a minute yeah I’m going to create an area I have this perfect area in my backyard that’s protected and I’m going to have them mounted onto trees that when they I buy

Them I bring them in the home utilize them but then when they are done I’m going to put them outside in this area and it’ll have a little misting system and they’ll kind of just regroup out kind of give them that that Forest Ambiance back there with the humidity

And the misting back into their native habitat hey car is leaving the show she’s going to new seos okay all right bye car I can’t blame her for that yeah I mean you know it’s I’m surprising yeah they’re going to be closing right that’s what I know so I

Thought they were already closed but they’re still maybe they’re having a clearance give us a report Carla please let us know what’s happening there how much longer we have to go because uh if you’re looking for really neat varieties of Chamas in you’re in the uh LA are and

Isas yeah and you’re in the LA area nuos is a place to go good place to get suuki oelas mhm they’re hard to find um who was it was it Lisa mentioned that she wanted Brach a kiten discolor oh yeah uh which I I think sometimes it’s called lacebark

Mhm um Bottle Tree and you don’t see that one very often sometimes you’ll see one I always liked was brachia kite ner a folus which is the flame Bottle Tree mhm um now I think of that I might need both of those on my property you know where you

Know the the thing that you can do with all of those is um a lot of times you can find the seeds online very easily but they are difficult to find growing like people growing them like if you want a one gallon 5 gallon 15 gallon but

Um well the there was that company that you really pushed South African seeds or something yeah kite those from Australia Australia but I was saying there there was another one that when we were talking about that South African I feel like they mentioned an Australian um you know counterpart also

That had a lot of the Australian varieties there’s Australian native plants which is a company here in California up in the uh Santa Barbara area and if you go to their website uh they I think they also sell seeds Okay so they might have it in the the bracket

K and I have at my house uh my daughter-in-law Grew From a seed yeah that we picked up off the ground at the LA AR burrito yeah a lot of like a lot of those trees grow very well from seed so it’s usually easy to get those but

Difficult to find the actual plant there’s just such a you know extensive variety of trees and you know when a a grower a nursery is committing to growing trees it’s a lot of time a lot of energy so to you really got to pick and choose what you want want because

It’s not not like you’re selling a ton of them all at once usually unless you’re selling a Fus hedge or put a carpus hedge what do you think about Dana’s comment she wants us to do a show on guarding mistakes that we’ve made very short short show we could do we

Could do a few segments I don’t know if a whole show un unless we have people on Facebook who who chime in and talk about their mistakes I’m I’m trying to think of a recent mistake that I made I can talk about your mistakes if I can’t

Think of any of my own yeah but that’s not we’re gardening we’re talking about guarding mistakes yeah that’s what I’m talking about no I don’t I don’t I don’t think so um you know the first one I would mention you know you know what I really this you know what I it’s

Unbelievable he just doesn’t want to let go of that does he and actually I was doing a good thing at the time trying to spread it evenly to the other plants so yeah one or two are going to be a little low on soil yeah actually you know if

That was for I know it just pushes buttons for you it it was for good drainage it was I was good drainage oh it had good drainage oh yeah yeah there was there was uh no soil for it to hold any water I got new to that was 10 years

Ago and it’s still alive oh well not not only is it still alive wasn’t it was it the green planet or was it I think it was it was Green Planet that my you know let we might as well tell everybody here’s a mistake I killed my Green Planet the one I gave

You the one that you got the C no no so I killed mine and I had to go back to Brian and get cuting so I could could get a new one right and what John is talking about is years ago he came over

To my house and a couple of two or three of my pots had soil about halfway up the pot maybe because I was low on soil and I took some of the soil and spread it out so that that that’s been the running joke but now how are those cuting how do

They do good it bloomed last year and that came from a green planet that I got at the auction in 2004 so that’s 20 years ago your son Eric was the one who bit on Eric bit on that 20 years ago goodness paid you to be the auctioneer

And wow and you gave the money to him he G yeah he gave uh yeah and I think the winning bid was like $80 it was $80 I remember that exactly um yeah I’ve got a lot of old roses you you know what and I

Love the I love the idea Dana and I will get on that I think that’s a fun idea to have a show about landscape mistakes but you know what would also be kind of fun to incorporate in that is we could do some research and find some of the worst landscape mistakes

You know ever like pictures like well well you know one thing off top of my head is what about yeah common mistakes people make well yeah we can but no what I’m talking about is you know you know over there in baloa park they have that

Giant Morton Bay fig that takes up the size of a city block right and I mean you know it’s a it’s a great idea and a great concept right to plant some of these massive trees that will eventually take over areas and I would say this

One’s doing any damage per se but you know it’s funny when you go into cities or Parks or commercial Landscapes that have had a landscape design or thoroughly think out something or HOA association yes like your eucalyptus trees throughout your whole complex and what that’s doing to the piping to the

Sidewalk roads did did you come over or did did uh did we know each other at the time when there was a huge UK cytus tree right to the left of our front door yeah right yeah right and they finally had to take it out because as you mention the

Our our second bathroom was just inside the house from that tree and all the piping well yeah the toilet wouldn’t flush it was backing up and of course there was a root that came in there so they had to take the tree down because the plumber said oh I can keep cutting

These these roots it’s going to keep on growing right back again non-stop so that’s a very good point and I’m so glad they took that tree out you know or certain other plants you know I mean you know we talk about you know trees that’s a very common very easy mistake for I

Think a lot of people to point out but even other things in the sense of you know in our Urban environments where they try to introduce plants they’re like oh I love this plant it’s a beautiful plant I’m going to put it here in an urban environment and we just know

Those plants cannot survive in urban areas with the traffic the soot the the the environment that it dictates to grow a plant is not conducive to certain plants and you know next thing you know they plant out a park and you go back six months later and the Park’s half

Dead because you know these plants wouldn’t be able to survive along the road or you know or where they bring in plants that attract certain pests or bugs right and now you’ve got all these issues with this in the area that you’ve created so there’s a lot of fun I think

Public mistakes that it’s what I call Point Counterpoint sure it looks good on paper colors are good so on so forth what about the root system yes you know what what about the longevity all right I got to ask this question now you know how you usually appreciate my mixed

Borders right yes yes okay would you think that you’re talking about the Morton Bay fig right yeah yeah and would you say I made a mistake in my mixed border by planting a Banyon tree yes exactly you know so that’s what you’re talking about and it might not be a

Mistake in your lifetime yeah but that’s I care about exactly no and that’s the truth right you care about your lifetime we got to take a break we’ve got one more segment Kevin brings up a good point about planning a fik is too close to the foundation oh I think a lot of

People have done that but I will tell you how that affected me and I didn’t do it on purpose after we returned from this break on Garden America please do stay with us angelon yes we do we are back from the break caught a little bit that on the mic loving

Angon at Le it wasn’t something else now we’re g now we’re going to move on because John has some things to bring up Kevin says planning a Fus too close to the foundation big mistake recall that I had a ficus in a pot yeah you didn’t

Plant this in the ground no it was in the pot and oh I don’t know a year later I’m watering and I went to move it and gee the pot doesn’t want to move well obviously it grew right through the pot into the ground so I’m like H okay no

Big deal a couple of years go by and it’s getting worse and wor worse and then during one of the shows John said something to the effect or you you know those roots are going to grow into the foundation you’re going to have a problem yeah and this thing was huge at

The time well you know Tre we cut it out we we attracted to water but if you have water with fertilizer in it I mean they’re going to go to your drainage pipe sewage pipes you know what’s funny about that so I called the HOA and they’re like well it’s not our

Problem I said yeah it kind of is and I explained about the root system and stuff and I don’t think they knew that I it was mine to begin with it was just in a pot so they came and took it down and I made sure they took the roots and

Everything out okay you want to get to uh Rick’s question Kevin had a question Kevin too well Rick uh says you know Rick moved from uh California uh Monrovia to Oregon and from Oregon to Idaho and he’s losing more and more of the growing season yeah

That’s gonna happen but so he said he’s focusing more on indoor plants which is what I did when I lived in Michigan and he says that he likes angel wing Bonas and they’ve always been one of my favorites as a matter fact there’s some people in Vista U tiger I’m trying to

Think of the name of that Nursery they specialize in Bonas and have a lot of different angel wing Bonas in Vista yeah it um whiters is the place in on the they’re two brison that they focus on yeah I don’t know Vista uh it might come

To me but uh but anyway Rick wants to know he says they have a tendency to get laggy and first of all they’re also called cane Bonas because they kind of grow like bamboo Brian you know with what very fast well fast but on long stems with leaves and but Rick is asking

A good question he said does the amount of Light have anything to do with it and that is a good point because the more light they get the less leggy if you want to use that term they’ll be so the more light the better um if you can get

Them outdoors in the summer when the weather warms up uh they’ll be better they’ll be bushier and you can top them do they tolerate the heat though as much uh you mean dry heat yeah right like like it’s that balance right because Bonia they like light but they also can’t

Tolerate the heat as much cane Bonas though or angel wing Bonas aren’t as fussy as tuberis Bonas and as long as they’re shaded they’ll do fine I have one there’s one called the polka dot Bonia that you’re probably familiar with MH and I have that planted in the ground

Right by my uh sliding glass store and it seems to be doing really well oh John mentioned Jim boomman I don’t know if that’s boomman Floral I know them they have a lot of um uh tanas and you know a lot of small specimen different plants

Um he says that they have uh a lot of Bonas and all of Hill has a good selection too that’s not the no company I’m thinking of okay and John says let’s do a program from the Orchid show so I’ll talk to John about that at the San

Diego Botanical Garden in May about yeah doing a program up there we’ll run some tests yeah to hooking up to Facebook and and doing the show that’ll be a lot of fun um so yeah and then Lisa wrote cuting of angels going going right now she’s got some cuting happening Bonas

Are one of those plants for sure that are fun to do from cuting you know you can you can always have a few and Rick mentioned they get Ley and what a great thing to do with Ley Bonas like Ley geraniums is just take some cuttings and

Restart them and try over again carto’s greenh hous carto never heard of that one k a r Tu Z oh yeah they’ve they’ve been there for years and years like at least at least 40 years maybe even longer and they had one of the largest collections of odd plants that I’ve ever

Seen yeah they’re tiny and you know when you get them you’ve got to grow them but okay so they they’re all just starts saying yeah they’re all they’re all starts but cartoon’s green houses and I think they’re as I recall last time I went to their website they had a pretty

Good selection nice good to know lots of fun it’s always fun to find those specialty plant Growers that have the unique and different stuff that’s always something I’ve wanted to try to do well with our Nursery is try to try find some unique stuff I think I just need to get

Better at growing you want to come down and run a growing operation John just not other stuff well you’ve got that greenhouse on your property yeah and I could probably stay in the Adu [Laughter] but I think Shannon would want me to come home on the weekend yeah just on

The weekends she’s fine with you gone all week you know what you’d be surprised in the beginning she’s like oh yeah come home and then after a while she no stay there you know what I there’s really no reason to come back I don’t like you making that drive John

Yeah here in fact John here’s 20 bucks you’ll be fine I could tell you some stories may be off air because if I set them on air I wouldn’t need to go home on the weekend oh it’s funny um yeah it’s always kind of fun when you can find those little

Select fun nurseries that grow unique and different stuff that you can’t find normally we got about a minute guys D says there’s a bunch of lace spk Queensland lapark trees in bboa park told do lots of fun stuff at bboa Park okay we should mention next week tiger

Next week we are going to take the week off it’s my fault because Tiger’s got some things going on well because we’re not used to doing a show every week now oh yeah exactly I mean we’re worn out we got to build up our endurance like

Spring come back and do every show up until Costa Rica and who knows maybe we can not do a show from Costa Rica but do something I think we can do a show from Costa Rica we could do something yeah I mean just find some Wi-Fi in Facebook

Exactly we’ll try it that would be fun we’ll give it a shot we I’m sure we could do something from the hotel or maybe an outdoor Garden yeah someplace exactly okay that’s going to do it ladies and gentlemen boys and girls and all the little animals that are gathered

Around the radio and Facebook and bis talk radio we do appreciate you thank you for your patience we are back up and running things are looking good so until uh two weeks again now you can go to YouTube you can go to Alexa you can go
