Roots and Refuge Farm: I’ve never seen this before!! (An adopted goat kid) | VLOG

Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Never heard I’d dandelion jam. Our neighbor years ago made dandelion wine. Every Christmas he would bring each neighbor a quart of his wine. It was delicious! lol! Don’t know the recipe.

  2. Once again how fun, thanks for letting me dream through your reality. May God continue to bless you in ways you can not even comprehend. ❤

  3. A friend (vet) did a study on a large herd of cattle that she ran. Instead of taking off the calves she left them on (they are beef) and had less health problems with the calves than those taken off? Ultimately; feeding on demand is far far healthier for the animal and their resistance to disease in the future is going to be stronger if the milk is raw and not pasteurised.

  4. will this make it hard on the buck when he's called to do his duty next year? Will he remember having nursed on that goat? Or am I hardcore anthropomorphizing an animal that will not care at all lol x) I'm not a farm girl at all, but I'm so curious!

  5. It's encouraging that your goats will be good mommas. If they were raised with kids being pulled …. There could be the question on their caring for their own. Sweet content. 🐸😎

  6. Shout out from brantford, ontario! We keep mostly nigerain dwarfs and "mini" nubains. Our only pygmy we have left let's all the kids feed off of her. Wich is completely opossite of any goat I've ever seen haha

  7. The friend I got my does from had a lost baby brought to her last fall. This baby (maybe 4 weeks old) refused to take a bottle and we were worried about her for a day or so. But then the mama of my goats adopted her and fed her well until she was old enough to be weaned. And I have that baby now. We named her Peony ❤

  8. Years ago I had a doe with triplets that didn’t make it..😢 one of my other does with a singleton took all three she feed all four of those babies. Every year after that I had to make sure she was breed first or separate her because she would steal the babies from the other mommas.. the only one I had ever do it.. you truly are blessed❤

  9. I have had a La Mancha, that I had just purchased and brought home adopt a 10 week old doling, whose mother I had sold I’m the very first night that she was here. I was really surprised as well, and in the 10 years that I had her two times, in which Goat birthing had started in the main pen early that La Mancha tried to steal those babies from that birthing mama. So, it is rare, but it definitely does happen.

  10. Why do I picture Toast ending up in someone's car and then doing an incredible journey remake to get home? SO glad she is well. Those are amazing goats. Definitely fulfillment of dreams material.

  11. The does probably miss their own babies and are more than happy to adopt Whit. We do have a doe who tries to steal the kids from other does. She is definitely the boss lady.

  12. I have to compete with my chickens for the dandelions I grow. Once a kid nurses off of a does it smells like her and she thinks it is hers. When the milk goes through them it changes their scent. We finally got a beautiful day today. It is so good for my mood. God bless your farm and family.

  13. Awwww…I love that the baby goatie has been adopted!! You can tell that you're going to have some good momma's right there ❤❤❤

  14. I enjoyed the story about the adopted goat. I wonder if that also makes the kid more healthy. Just like our babies on mothers milk – immunity is passed as also mother child bonding happens. Perhaps a certain kind of goat may be a better candidate for doing this?

  15. Is it difficult coming up with names for all the animals? I love this channel. It's always a bright spot in my day, watching your videos.

  16. Dandelion jam with potential hair, yuck. Maybe don't touch your hair while massaging your dandelion petals, Jess. You should corral your beautiful locks while preparing food.

  17. We calf share. Daisy is an awesome mama & the flexibility is great. I can get people to feed. Milking is a whole other thing. If I am sick this is perfect. We plan to do the same with our goats even though I do have someone who can milk goats.

  18. Never experienced a goat ""adoption" but have had natural Mama's reject their own newborns and try to "plant" those poor babies into the ground. Definitely became bottle babies. Congratulations on your "your mothering Mamas"!!!🌻🐛

  19. I think toast got accidentally closed into a building or vehicle. We had our cat get closed into our well house one time. We had looked everywhere we could think of and finally found him in there.

  20. This year I'm gonna pick tons of dandelion..I have a ebook that has tons of recipes for dandelions….I love making all sorts of jelly with different plants…so far I've made queen Anne's Lace jelly…its delicious!!!
It's been raining here the last couple days…our chicken run is a hot mess🙄

  21. My mom and dad raised Nubian goats. They had a goat named Alice that would take any baby that came near to her. If they ever had one that was rejected by a mom, they would give it to Alice and she would be so proud and love on that baby.

  22. They also remove goat babies so that the mother's utter doesn't become forever lopsided if a baby favors one side.

  23. Jess, have you ever had a buck with utters in milk? I didn’t know that was possible until I saw it on Cog Hill Farm. Nature is wonderful!
