California Gardening: High Yield Beans – Growing Lalblab Purpureus Beans + Recipe!

In today’s episode we look at growing a high yield bean variety called Lablab purpureus also called Hyacinth Beans or Lablab beans, also called Australian pea, Dolichos lablab, avarakkai, Val beans, Papdi beans, Indian bean, Australian pea, bataw, etc.

We start our high yield hyacinth beans seeds in seed starting cells, then transplant it in containers and raised beds. In warmer areas like Southern California, hyacinth or lablab beans grows round the year.

The leaves of the hyacinth purpureus is used as feed for livestock. THe leaves can also be eaten. Its important to cook the leaves and pods of this bean plant before consumption. They should not be eaten raw.
