So happy to visit my old church. Both people and plants are doing well!

Let’s make an important distinction between *directions* and *principles*

Here’s a perfect example: watering this Monstera. Before I left, I gave my friends the *direction* to water once a week with two full watering cans. This worked because the underlying *principle* for watering a Monstera (and most tropical foliage plants) is ‘given that the light situation is right, water when the soil is partially dry.’

2️⃣ & 3️⃣ Now what about dead leaves? *Principle* the first leaves to yellow will typically be the oldest leaf on the vine. This occurs when nutrients become limiting and the plant salvages what it can to reallocate it to new growth (tip: “occurs when” promotes understanding of the biological system vs. “caused by” promotes panic). *Direction* because I have seen this plant hold 8 to 11 leaves per vine *in this space* and since I know fertilizer hasn’t been added while I was gone, I decided to do a top dressing (adding some new soil) and give it fertilizer.

4️⃣ How the plant looked prior to some cleaning, rearranging of the upper vines to the trellis, and taking a cutting (the lower vine had gotten too far out of the pot anyway).

Doesn’t understanding a few principles go a long way to making your plant care less stressful?
