Well it might be 1 of March today but it’s horrible we’re getting constant downpours as sleep probably seat snow stuck at glass temperatures drop down quite a bit as well once again so although we’re approaching spring as you can see from my breath we’re still not at a point where we want

To be sewing too much it’s quite early to start thinking about growing potatoes especially if you’re going to grow them outside but if you want to start some first earlies even earlier then you can grow them in containers as long as you’ve got somewhere to put them away from that

Weather they don’t want to be in freezing temperatures so to put them in a container like this inside a greenhouse and then cover them with bubble wrap would work I do it every year and I’ll start off at a couple of very early ones because they only take

12 to 14 weeks to reach maturity cuz you’re only growing very small potatoes about the size of eggs which is your new potatoes or your salad potatoes so I don’t mind starting off a couple of containers at this time of year just to get something on its way but we will

Need to offer it that little bit of extra protection something like this if you’re shter space a 10 L container you can grow a few potatoes in something like that you don’t have to have these massive 30 L containers not when it comes to your first eares you’re

Only going to get a few out of it they don’t store very well so it’s kind of grow them and then eat them as you harvest but for something just of that size if you’re a container Gardener that’ll work one thing that’s definitely worth remembering is that when you’re

Planting your first and second early potatoes you only want one potato per 10 L if you’re using a 20 L container you can put two potatoes in that and so on but if you’re only growing in a 10 liter just put one potato in there that’s plenty there’s enough room for some

Roots and a few potatoes to grow you definitely don’t want to do any more than that so that’s what I’m doing today I’m going to start off a couple of these 10 lit containers with his first ear and the ones that I’ve got are called Rocket and there was a

Lady who mentioned on channel concerning chitting and said when is a good time to plant them at what stage is okay I’ll show you a couple of examples of these potatoes this one is what we’ve had in these trays indoors in light so they don’t turn

White we need purple or green green Tops on these chips if you look at that one you can see that it’s not a bad size chip it’s a couple of centimeters and it’s a nice dark color that’s how you want them once they reach that stage they’re good for

Planting and that’ll be the one for that container for whatever reason this potato fell over in this tray me moving things around and these chits are white cuz not add any light if you look on tops they are starting to go green and a purpley color so because these are very

Small chips these will now start to color up so you don’t need to knock those off just let them carry on growing and then they’ll get some color on them and they’re good to go what you don’t want is potatoes with really long white chits on them if that

Happens to you because you’ve kept them in a bag under stairs or in a Cupboard then you want to knock those chits off now and then it’ll regrow some new ones and what I like to do with these containers is part filling with some compost that’s a bit

Rough the stuff that we save out and put to one side cuz we’re trying not to throw anything away and then we use that for the bottoms of these containers cuz all we’re going to get growing there is all the roots and then we’ll add fertilizer to

That as well give it a good boost of nutrients just to get everything on its way and while we’re in here I’ll just give you a quick look put these onion sets that we put out we just put them in trays like that and we

Let them start to grow and if you look there you can see we’ve got a green shoe coming so these onions are now on the way and as cold as it is once again that lettuce is trying to put a little bit of growth on everything is going to be so slow at

This time of year and it’s going to be like that probably up until end of April so once again a few bits on bobs at a time offer them that protection that they’re going to need and you’ll have plenty of stuff on go over the next few

Weeks on that lead up to Spring and just before we get these potatoes planted in these containers I just want to say a massive thank you to Jason Lee for making a donation to channel that was really generous of you to do that and it really is appreciated and that donation

Will get put straight back into this channel and it’s going to help us out with the bits and Bobs that we need over the next few weeks so thank you so much Jason for your generosity first thing I’m going to do is once again use what’s

Left of this fertilizer it’s only in a container because the Box got wet and again it’s been getting wet because of leak of greenhouse but that doesn’t matter because we’re planting that’s bone meal so a couple or handfuls of that into bottom of this container so we want the nutrients near the bottom

So those roots can take up that goodness so we’ll put some of that in and then I’m also going to pop in an handful of fish Blood and Bone so that’s plenty of nutrition in that little container and then we’ll just give that a little bit of a

Mix and that’s that job done then all we need to do is add a little bit more compost to this container when it comes to planting your potatoes don’t plant them right at the bottom of that container these are first earlies and it’s the same rule for first earlies

And second ears the potatoes grow at one level in your container they’re not like main crops we have to constantly keep burying them so you get more and more tubers that come out they don’t work like that these just grow on one level so if you put your potato around halfway

Down a container like that there’s plenty of room for those roots to to grow out and then plenty of room for that Chute to go up and then put art or your tubers in the widest part of your container so we’re just going to take

This and we’re just going to pop it in as it is one potato put it in your container with that chit sticking upwards if you’ve got two or three chits growing on your potato maybe not one of them off you don’t want too many chips otherwise you’re going to have lots and

Lots of shoes going up and then you’ll end up with more folage than potatoes so I stick to one or two really good looking chits and then I’ll pop it in the center of that container and I’ll just push it into compost a little bit and that way it’ll stay UPR right we

Don’t want it falling over now we’ve got that chit on its way and then it’s just a quol cover it with fresh compost and I like to use sifted compost for this because then potatoes have then got plenty of movement in that compost to grow you don’t want to compress it down

At all so it’s just a caser filling this to top now and don’t shake it toart because you might move that potato so just fill it right to the top you’ve got your nutrients in there you’ve got your one potato in there and now you set

Up and just leave it at that give it a quick water to get that plant on its way but don’t keep watering it every day because if you do you might W risk or r ing that potato before it gets started so just a quick watering pop it to one

Side and in a couple of weeks time you’re going to see that shoot coming out at top and as soon as you see that shoot You Know You’ve Got Roots growing and your potatoes are going to start quite shortly after normally when the plant starts to flour is when it starts

To produce tubers some varieties don’t flow but pretty much all of them do so you’ve got a waiting game now just set your containers up like that wait for that shoe to come and you don’t want these plants being hit by a frost either especially when that folage comes out at

Top cuz if they get it by a frost it will turn the top of that plant black and then it will die off so then that potato will then have to send up another chit so you’ve wasted all that time chitting him in first place so you could just wrap some bubble

Wrap around your container like that and then just tape it on and you could also put some bubble wrap inside another container that same size one that fits the all way around and then stand that container inside and then you’ve created another layer or insulation to protect it that’s

Going to help keep it warm and until you see something coming out at the top of this container cover it up with some fleece or bubble wrap that’s all you’re going to need to do it’s going to take quite a few weeks before we actually see anything happening with this container

Hopefully by then it is is going to be a little bit warmer but don’t forget for most places you won’t pass your last frost date until around miday so you definitely need to keep the eye on these plants and look after them so I’m going

To set a couple of these up today then we’ve got first first early potatoes on the way if you want to start some off yourself great if you haven’t got a greenhous but you’ve got a shed you can just pop them in a shed cuz they don’t

Need any light until that plant comes out or a conservatory would be even better but if you haven’t got any of those things I would suggest waiting don’t plant any potatoes if you can only leave them outside because they are going to suffer and you’ll be pretty

Much not only wasting your time but wasting your seed potatoes as well anyway I hope this video is proved useful to quite a lot of people especially all those new gardeners and the container gardeners that have jumped on board this year as well and as we approach spring as I always say little

  2. I have just put my tubers in some small pot noodle pots do you think I would be best putting them in a veg bed with a fleeced cloche will that work to keep them from freezing.
    Thank you again Ivan

  3. Great video, Ivan! I’m not really a new gardener (but always learning) and you demystified the differences between earlies and main crops for me! Thank you. Happy March!

  4. Still chomping at the bit here, I'm way down south so next maybe next week outdoors under some fleece when this cold snap finishes. I hope the geo engineering this year doesnt mess the summer up again.

  5. My potatoes got planted last week. It doesn't look like we are going down to freezing again, but if we do I can cover them or bring them inside. It's great to see everyone start growing again.

  6. thanks ivan! gonna hold of my potatoes until this miserable weather has gone. Hopefully that won't be too much longer cause I'm itching to get planting XD

  7. I'm On Point* Started my potato's in the Greenhouse Yesterday* I Chitted my πŸ₯” s & asked a friend what chitting was* she found the word amusing lol,,Keep Up The Good Work All* My Garden Is My Temple* my most favorite place* where I'm happiest,,,Shell from Uk ❀️

  8. Another informative video Ivan one thing I've never really understood if you have a seed potato with poor chits you remove them and they regrow and when planting a well chitted seed with to many chits you rub some of to leave a couple then plant will the chits you rubbed of not regrow anyway

  9. Thanks Ivan, great info with the explanation about how the different spuds grow ie; early vs maincrop. Have a great weekend. Take care and all the best. Stevie

  10. Oh Ivan so.many ideas and tips thankyou so much i have been growing for quite a few years now but learning so much you from you. Thanks

  11. I plant 2 buckets of first early potatoes / rocket at two week intervals from 1 march to third week of April in green house that way I've got spuds growing at different stages so if I get a frost I haven't lost them all

  12. Hi I just chitting my Charlotte and pink furs got my compost ready and my tubs waiting can’t wait to get started πŸ˜…πŸ˜… xxxx thanks for your help & videos x ❀

  13. Thanks Ivan, I like the way you show people with little money, space and knowledge how easy it can be to grow your own veg. I also like the fact that you have a cooking Chanel. At 64 I have realised I've been freezing food all wrong. Still they say your never to old to learn.

  14. I have a question if that's ok Ivan. How can I tell if my spuds are 1st, 2nd early or main crop and determinate or indeterminate. I have several types to grow. Thanks.

  15. Hi.great chanel, very informative thank you.i have a question.im trying this yr to grow potato in a heavy duty recycling bag and using my own compost, was wondering if the worms in my compost will eat the planted potatoes or would you not risk it and just buy the compost in a bag, worm free?thank you πŸ‘
