Roots and Refuge Farm: A sunshine break (how it’s going in the greenhouse) | VLOG

Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. I start zucchini and yellow squash in the larger container & transplant as soon as I see roots begin poking out. They have been quite successful transplanting this way. Takes a little more notice, but it is worth it imo lol

  2. Absolutely stones & what about feathers 😂 I have a shelf of stones & my van has them stashed away in any nook & cranny plus pockets for special ones 😂

  3. Always a joy to see your smiling face. I might be an old fart (almost 70) but I still collect rocks and other "treasures" that stand out to me. Much better collection than my daughters snail shells she used to put in her pockets too. She was always so sad when she'd go to pull them out just to pull out a handful of crushed shells. 😂 Didn't catch on to that one very quick, just kept trying because she thought they were "so interesting!". LOL!

  4. My little early variety tomatoes have popped up this week. I’ll wait about two weeks before starting the hot weather ones. Thanks for bringing us along. ❤❤❤

  5. I follow an organic gardener in Arizona. Her hack for keeping pillbugs from her garden vegetables is to place a half orange cut side down on top of the soil every couple of feet. The oranges pull the pill bugs away from the seedlings and bigger plants. May be worth a try.

  6. I have had to avoid tomatoes in the past couple of years due to reflux. Can you recommend allow acid tomato that I could grow? I’m in NC. Blessings…daisy

  7. Ricks: Wisdom Keepers .. oh the stories that they could tell, with all they have seen over the passage of time

  8. Love the rock collecting spirit. One grandson has a stack from many beach forays over the years. One day it will morph into an artscape. Geological finds are hard to resist. Carry on!❤😂

  9. Jess it was so nice to see everything like a mini tour and of course Bear❤❤❤. Your seedlink are so cute. Hardly can wait to see them outside. 🎉🎉🎉

  10. Happy Birthday to your Tomatoes Jess🥳.
Congratulations Daniel on your new Marriage 🎉.
    Happy Gardening Jess!
If I was a betting woman ,I'd say you had a good piece of string and a Frog in your apron too🤣!
    JO JO IN VT 💞

  11. I saw youtuber, Weed em and Reap, put orange halfs, cut side down, in areas of the garden that had problems with pill bugs/roly polys. She said that the bugs prefer the oranges!

  12. The only way I protect my squash and such from pill bugs is to cut toilet rolls in half and put them around my starts when I put them out. It works pretty well!

  13. We started leeks indoor a couple times, then haven't had to again because the end up a perennial bed in our zone 9b. I will have leeks forever because they self sow. We love them because we can harvest from them year round. We started a bunch flower seeds yesterday, but still need to start tomatoes and herbs. So fun that you are sharing your green house with several friends! Everything looks great!

  14. Honey… I'm such a rock freak myself, that when you went to show us the deer tracks I was thinking where's the cool rock! LOL P.S. It's a good thing that we can't show you pictures on here. I was about to drop a ton of "proof of rock crazy" pictures. 😛
