Okay let’s see if this one fixes I apologize uh I don’t know it would not like it said I was live on my phone and it was not live um it would not come live on the original link so hopefully this one kind of does the

Trick but now I can’t find a link for this one so there we go okay can you see and hear me okay this time everybody here hopefully okay perfect I’m not sure that was the I have never had that happen before it’s it was running on my phone

Said I was live and it never updated on on um YouTube like it just kept showing the main like theum thumnail for the video so that was really bizarre but uh we’re trying something new tonight my phone has a problem with the microphone where it sounds like I have a huge like

Airplane running behind me occasionally I don’t know what c what’s causing it um and so I’m trying to use this microphone so hopefully the audio is okay and hopefully that stops that B52 sound in the background um if you were with us on a live just a little bit ago we had that

Problem where everyone thought we were running a big fan behind us it’s actually the microphone on myone phone is going out that we use for live streaming so hopefully this solves the problem so uh thank you all for hopping over here sorry I had to fix that but we

Do want to talk about the Garden tonight unfortunately Sam can’t be here tonight 700 p.m. is shift change at the hospital so no matter if he works a day or a night on a Monday he can’t make the live stream but fortunately he does not work

Very many Mondays so but he did have to work today so he will not be able to join us but I thought I’d hop on we do a quick one since I’m kind of the one runs the garden anyway he wouldn’t have much to to add to the conversation so let’s

See we got Melanie here and Veronica welcome Granda Dan is here from North Carolina RC Joe to and beer Family Farm is here and Iris lady and empty nester and Arkansa prepper thank you all from hopping over from the other stream that wasn’t working and Sharon and Beth and

Becky is here from Louisiana so welcome we got people from all over the country Washington Miss Mississippi Alabama so thank you for for joining us from Australia all right what time is it in Australia is it like 700 a.m. is it 12 hours it’s 700 p.m. here so

Uh it’s uh pretty dark it’s not actually that cold it’s been getting up okay 11:00 a.m. in Australia awesome um it’s not been that cold this last week uh it’s getting up into the 50s every day which is really nice cuz the kids can go outside to play they were driving me absolutely

Crazy because after like 3 weeks of it being you know in the teens or even sometimes in the negatives um during the day like even at the hottest point of the day they just couldn’t play outside or really couldn’t play outside for more than like 10 or 15 minutes and so they

Finally been able to go out every day we didn’t do any school today we just played outside so hopefully everybody got all their energy out and as good and tired and really starting to feel like spring is coming starting to think about the garden um so let’s see over Veronica

Is from Ontario Canada so I’m sure it’s still pretty cold there and Aunt Holly’s here and Florence from Utah yeah beer wear them down they’ve been on the trampoline all day if they don’t sleep well tonight then I give up so um The Garden right now uh so last year we did

Something new you probably remember we did um we did a no till bed and we did two raised beds I definitely learned a lot um we’ve always done a traditional row garden with some container gardening and just had to do it that way because that’s what we could afford any type of

Gardening other than like a put it in the ground row Garden has a startup cost cuz you either have to build physical containers like with the rais beds or even um like no till you got to have the material to put on top of the ground like the compost material and stuff it’s

A lot of compost and dirt and even with us having goats and sheep we didn’t have enough until this past year to really be able to do it without having to buy and trying to buy and haul material costs money like you have to buy the material

And you have to get it back to your farm and so we always did a traditional row Garden um because it was the cheapest way to get plants in the ground and to grow food but we definitely wanted to get things that get something set up that needed less work cuz row gardening

Is a lot of manual labor and and it’s pretty much on me um some of the kids like to help but most of them are still pretty little so they’re not out there like for an hour pulling weeds so um what so we did the noil bed and two

Raised beds um the biggest challenge was the watering we discovered that both of the notil and the raised bed seem to just need more watering than the Rog garden and one way we’re going to combat that this year is more uh doing straw on top top of what we’ve planted I think

That’ll solve that problem at least in the no till bed kind of keep the water from evaporating so we’ll we’ll plant everything and when things start to sprout out then we’re going to spread straw down a nice thick layer of straw which will help with the weeds too and

It’ll help retain the moisture so maybe we don’t have as much problem with watering the lack of moisture really cause germination issues if you remember from last year I had to plant my corn three times because you couldn’t get it to germinate cu the ground would dry out

So fast so uh Grandpa Dan here says he planted in his Greenhouse already he’s got arugula buttercrunch carrots in bags potatoes in bags garlic from October awesome and spinach yeah spinach and lettuce is and carrots always do really well in the greenhouse for me um testing

A theory I don’t know if it’ll work but I’ve left my carrots in the ground in the greenhouse and uh I’m not going to pick them until the spring even though they’re probably large enough to be picked and going see if they get bigger just kind of see what happens so um just

Kind of picking them as I need them in the spring instead of picking them all at once and preserving them just kind of see what happens there uh yes Debbie Sam is working today he doesn’t usually work Mondays but uh he is working today and like I was saying before s is shift

Change so it doesn’t matter which shift he works if he works on a Monday he will always miss a live stream um but he like I said he doesn’t work very many so he’s he’s always he’s usually been able to be here for live streams but we hadn’t had

One in a while so I I did want to hop on for at least a short little bit um grandpa Dan’s got some Hydroponics going on too in his Greenhouse that’s awesome that’s not something that we’ve tried and prep for eternity is here welcome and radish is

Going in soon perfect welcome Tessa and Becky said she started tomato and pepper seeds yesterday that’s so Becky when is your you’re in Louisiana I think when is your um last frost date we can’t start things inside yet we’re not going to put things in the ground till probably first

Week of May so I look at starting things in the ground mid starting things inside mid middle of March usually for things that need more time like your peppers um but beer says if I leave a carrot of two they’ll seed this year I might try that

I don’t know if I’d want to save how labor intensive saving carrot seeds is I assume it’s a lot like the onion seeds where you just kind of you have to kind not like husk them but you have to pull them out of the Little Flower pods that

They’re in um Becky says March 17th okay so much sooner than we are uh Jan B says has anyone fermented radishes itic creates a good taste I actually have done that I fermented radishes with garlic some red pepper like chili flakes and obviously the vinegar um they were pretty spicy I may

Have gone a little heavy on the red pepper chili flakes cuz radishes already have a bit of a bite to them um but I did not like them but they were definitely a little hotter than than what I would normally eat so I think it’s definitely worth trying they did

Keep a pretty good crunch even being fermented which was nice I like things with a nice crunch so let’s see RC Joe says my last frost isn’t until May 10th yeah so we’re our last frost is technically like April 21st but I never trust it I feel like mother nature can

Be really mean and so I always wait at least a a week after the anticipated last frost date just to make sure we’re in the safety zone so there’s nothing worse than putting all that time and effort into starting plants and planting them and being so

Excited that you finally got them in the ground and all that works behind you and then they all die so and there’s things you could do like if as long as it’s not a hard Frost like you can cover a lot of things but it’s just for me it’s just

Better to wait and put that energy in when you when you know for sure you’re only going to have to do it one time so uh Lauren is here from Missouri welcome and let’s see Jane B yeah give those radishes a try I think you’ll like you’ll like them maybe stay away from

The red pepper flakes uh did we feel the Oklahoma earthquake no I don’t think so uh I didn’t feel it I I assume if anyone would feel it out here it would be us in This Old House shakes pretty easy so uh didn’t feel anything um was that today I

Don’t even know it’s it’s been a super busy day today um been driving around around um let’s see yeah one week pass that’s my best if if that’s like the first gardening advice I always give somebody if they’re like I want to start gardening tell me what I need to know I

Say first thing you need to know is don’t plant on that last frost day wait a week so Becky says I never plan in the ground until after the Easter snap though okay and Sharon I get I put radishes in the roast carrots yeah they have a great

Taste yeah I’ve heard uh if you put radishes in instead of potatoes they’re very similar to potato but I have not tried that yet I like just raw radishes just maybe with a little ranch dressing on them but I am the only person in the family that likes radishes which is why

We don’t really ever if you watch our videos if I grow radishes I only grow like 10 of them because I am the only person in the family that likes them so uh Jan B says some people in Kansas City felt it but not me okay yeah didn’t come

All the way we’re about two two and a half hours from Kansas City so we did not feel it out here so oh Debbie’s in Oklahoma and she never felt it so I guess it depends where the epicenter was Oklahoma’s a pretty good siiz state so so anyway the plan for this year

We’re going to keep the no tilt garden bed the exact same size so it’s probably about 40 ft one way and maybe 20 ft deep which isn’t humongous not small either but it’s got a greenhouse right in the middle so it’s a little bit smaller than

That what is that 800 square ft um I’m not expanding that at all I’m going to keep that exactly the same size but I I do want to build new raised beds um we have two raised beds right now that are about 2 or 2 and 1/2 ft High I can’t

Remember which one it is and um made them out of repurposed wood that we already have and I have enough wood to build two more if I make them half that height so they’ll be just over a foot tall and I’ll be curious maybe I don’t

Know if beer family or Becky trying to think of some other people who are on here that have raised beds if you’ve done the shorter ones so this isn’t flush with the ground so it’s still over a foot tall if you notice a difference as far as like weeds getting in there

Versus the taller ones um one reason I want to do the shorter ones and is that I don’t have to buy more wood but the other big reason is it’s really tough to fill those really tall ones that is a lot of material and it settled a lot

From last year so it needs fill I feel like it’s about they only look like half full right now so they need a lot more material and so looking at the amount of um like compost that we’ve pulled out of the Stalls that I have

Left over I if I build two more that are the 2 and 1/2 ft tall not going to I’m going to have to buy material and I really don’t want to have to do that so I’d be curious if you feel like the height really makes a

Difference it tells me to upgrade Roblox okay well we’ll have to solve that later okay I want playing I know but I’m talking right now go pee PE okay we’ll go to the bathroom um so go away uh let’s see somebody asked where do you get your seeds from seed catalogs are so

Expensive yeah it depends I’ll be honest I’ve boughten bought I always buy certain so there’s a couple things I really like from Burpee like they have a green bean I think it’s called Kentucky blue or blue Kentucky it’s like the best green bean it it grows in all circumstances and it Cans

Really well I always buy like the one PB bag of that I really like them and Burpee I’ve always had really good luck with their onion starts which are expensive I’m not going to lie but they do really well so I typically always buy those two things from Burpee and I

Usually pick some random thing that they have that’s new that year so I can try it just whatever weird new variety they have that I’m like oh that looks like a really cool Plant like some random melon I’ll buy that too but other than that I

Get a lot of my seeds at like the dollar store where they have the four for a dollar um they have the Dollar Tree out here that does the four for the dollar like all those are non- GMO seeds they aren’t they aren’t going to be heirloom

Or um necessarily organic but they will be non GMO and it’s just the most affordable way to do it I found so if you really want fancy seeds excuse me like if um heirloom varieties are really important to you then Burpee has pretty decent prices for those type of seeds and obviously the

Creme de La Creme is the baker Creek um seeds they’ve got things like plants you’ve never even heard of in your life that you can grow they they have such cool varieties of just really like old old timey seeds things that have have been saved and not changed in any way so

That’s how I do it though um I do agree that a lot of seed catalogs are expensive so um around town sing us is Johnny seeds in Maine okay I’ve never looked at a at a Johnny seeds and tizzy Don says that the earthquake was three

Miles from our house wow well I hope everything’s okay but I’m sure you guys felt that so um Debbie says oh wow yeah definitely and Sharon says my husband built me three elevated beds to help with Mo my Mobility yeah and that’s that’s what I’m really finding in just

In my research obviously if your raised beds are pretty flush with the ground weed seeds can get in there really really easily or creatures can get in there and dig really easily but the big difference between having like a 2T and a 3ft rais bed or 4ot raised bed is more

About ease of use where you don’t have to bend over as much so as you get older or if you have other conditions that cause your Mobility to not be as um available as as other people it can be easier to uh to Garden in a higher bed

Cuz you don’t have to bed okay thank you babe I will fix that in in just a little a little bit go do something else for a minute okay yeah she’s eating I justed her by the wayed her right here that that’s her head why is she upside down

All right silly I’ll see you in a little bit okay go use your tablet uh let’s see beer feeling says we had several that are about 10t 10 in I was like 10et how do you get up there tall some weeds around the edge but not bad you going to

Play Roblox then we do put cardboard under them I won’t going to play I will fix it when I’m done I will fix it when I’m done going I can’t fix it right now cuz I’m talking we’ll talk about it when I’m done okay uh let’s see beer Family Farm

Says we buy a lot from the MFA oh that’s a good place I never thought about looking there and if you can find a hardware store that sells try start there good seed for a good price I have never seen TR start that might be but I

I guess I should cuz they’re you’re actually pretty close to us here so maybe I just need to look more carefully uh Becky says I use Burpee and I get my peas and green bean scenes at their local co-op Debbie says I don’t buy from Dollar General seeds many people say the

Vegetables don’t grow okay I haven’t had a problem something to make sure you look at though is the date some retailers will try to sell seeds from last year which they may still grow but you won’t have as good germination and so if they’re trying to sell seeds that

They’ve been hanging on in the back room since last year you don’t want those so make sure you check the package date on any seeds that you buy you want them um they’ll say on the back they’ll say like packaged for the 2024 season

So uh Mi Garder I seed for $2 a pack yes I forgot about Mi Garder I’ve grown several varieties they have some really neat unusual things too and uh always had really good luck like the germination rate was really good um Debbie says we bought some and the bell

Peppers did not grow okay I have found that that Peppers do not germinate well for me peppers like a lot of moisture and they like it consistently warm and that’s hard to do with the wood stove it it’s not consistent and it’s not humid like it sucks so much uh moisture out of

The air so I actually don’t even bother trying to start peppers inside anymore it just doesn’t work here it’s not worth the aggravation so I always buy my pepper plants from the hardware store or you know Walmart wherever we are um or the store other than trying to start

Them at home because it doesn’t work well for me cuz I just don’t have the right conditions for Peppers but other plants like tomatoes and squash I can start those inside no problem but the peppers really like that humidity and it can’t it can’t dip down in temperature

They like it hot and so they’re they can be a little more difficult some people use like a uh they make vegetable heating pads like it’s like a heating pad like you use for your belly but it’s for under veeg veggie trays for starting seeds that’s something uh people who

Like to start peppers inside a lot of them have something like that to really keep them warm uh let’s see roundtown says I’m old less bending sounds good yes it’s helpful you know less bending in general just sounds good not having to get up and down off the ground a lot

Also the taller your raised beds the less likely your toddler is to walk over them in case you need to know that too uh J B says talk about diggers you don’t want to hear my thoughts on squirrels uh okay so with the raised beds a lot of people put um

Like Hardware that mesh wire I can’t remember what it’s called it’s called like Hardware mesh somebody can correct me it’s they staple it to the underside of their raised beds because it makes it impossible for things like moles and vs to grow to dig up your raised bed they

Can’t get through that that mesh and then things that dig under uh we don’t have problems with squirrels digging but our cats if the raised bed is new and it’s just been planted the cats get in in there and use it like a litter box

Every time and so after I plant I use just chicken wire and I just bend it over the top and I leave it there until the plants are tall enough that it’s in the way and then by that point the plants are big enough that there’s not

Enough dirt that anything tries to dig in there that’s what I do some of it’s going to depend what kind of pests you’re dealing with and how determined they are and what they want out of your dirt they’re just using it as a as a litter box then they’re not interested

If there isn’t a a large area of open dirt available uh there was a baby under there yeah I fed her right before too but she decided she wasn’t done so just multitasking yeah so I actually found out in case you’re curious she has a lot

Of hair like uh Katie says look at all that hair there is a uh they did a research study a few years ago aiming to disprove that hair was related to heartburn like to disprove the old wives and they actually did the opposite and discovered that it’s actually

True has to do something with the hormones needed to grow hair uh relax you’re like esophagus so your heartburn is worse for the mom because of the hormones the baby has to grow all that hair so it actually is related not that you can’t have heartburn with a bald

Baby but you’re more likely to have really bad heartburn when they’ve got a whole Mohawk so uh let’s see yes uh J&B has the we one gotten her days and nights straighten out I hope that you’re all getting some good rest yeah she’s doing a lot better I’ve had enough babies kind

Of like know how to work them back onto the right schedule she obviously still wakes up several times a night to eat but we were having a like when she was just a few weeks old she was at like 1:00 she was up for like 3 hours that

Was her awake time 1:00 in the morning she was partying for 3 hours and wanted to be held and entertained so we had to move that time to a time when the Sun was up so uh let’s see Becky says hardware cloth that’s what I call it that’s right

Hardware cloth so people put hardware cloth they connect it like staple it to their raised beds and that prevents anything from digging up so that’s something it’s a little bit of an added expense but if you have problems with moles or any other burrowing type animal I would highly recommend doing that

Little extra step it’ll you’ll think yourself later um heartburn equals thick hair yep not I mean like I said you you could be unlucky and have heartburn without it but you’re more likely to have bad heartburn if your baby’s got a lot of hair so now you know

Uh uh beer says I rarely have heartburn must explain my lack of hair I don’t think it works that way that’s funny um I don’t think we’re going to plant anything new this year so my goal um I still want to do a Three Sisters Garden so that’s corn squash and pull

Beans so that’s half the garden and then in the noil bed I plant tomatoes and peppers because they do really well I feel like they do better in the ground for me than in a race bed there’s people who grow those things in race beds and do fantastically well for

Me I don’t know I feel like they just do better in the ground um and they’re also easier to like stake in the ground and keep from getting like all tangled in with each other cuz you just have more space to space them Mount but in the raised bread in the raised

Beds plan is to do um do onions and carrots we’re going to do some peas I have like an arch between two of the raised beds we’re going to grow some snap peas up over the arch and um probably some cucumbers I like climbing cucumbers so I’ll have um some more

Trellises in there and then um I grew squash I also grew squash in some really big wash basins last year like the old silver galvanized wash tubs I have some of those and that actually did really well and I found that it was really easy to find the squash bugs on the squash

When you had one squash plant in each of those big tubs CU it was really easy to turn the plant over and look and uh when you water the plants to the squash bugs come up from from the ground and when it’s in a big tub like that it’s harder

For them to run real far away cuz they got to climb up the sides of the tub so they’re real easy to smash as they try to climb up the sides of the tub so I highly recommend if you have a big enough galvanized tub or planter bag to

Plant your squashes and something like that I found it really easy to stay on top of the squash bugs with them in that kind of setup versus just in the ground Sharon says I started my peppers on a heat mat there you go that’s what they’re called not a heating pad heat

Mat tomorrow I’ll plant tomato seeds and herbs one new thing that I don’t know if I’m going to try it this year cuz I’m kind of We’re Not that we’re up against the wire I still it’s February I don’t have to plant till May 1st but I like to

Be really planned far ahead but I really want to grow like a tea garden my friend Adrian who sometimes is in the videos um she grew one this year she grew a bunch of different plants in a raised bed and and then dried them for tea and I

Thought that was really a neat idea I really like tea too so I’m thinking um I was thinking maybe a small raised bed for growing a tea mix and you can buy seed packets that are just tea mixes excuse me I get a drink of water um so they’re already like you don’t

Have to necessarily plan it out um and you can kind of just cast those seeds and it grows a mixture for you that’ll dry well for some sort of like chamomile or a mint tea or something like that so that’s one thing I kind of think it

Would be fun to try and it would be easy to do in a raised bed but I’m not sure if I will be able to get to that this year obviously first priority is food to put in the pantry got a lot of people people to feed

So uh Regina says I have had good luck starting peppers and tomatoes with a heat mat as well awesome that’s something on my I will try one day list I don’t think it’s going to be this year um to have like a heat mat biggest struggle too is since they’re still a

Toddler um is anytime you start season inside it’s just so tempting just that dirt inside the house you know so tempting to go get a spoon and dig around on those pots when mommy’s not looking so we’ve lost many a started plant to a toddler in the 11 years of

Parenting we have so far so don’t just don’t have a good place in the house to start plants where it’s not accessible to little people because the house is built in such a way that the sun doesn’t come in the windows cuz that’s how they kept a house cool

Before air conditioning and so we have one window here in the back that actually gets good Sun but it’s right in the middle of the kitchen and so every little person is right can see it every day almost all day and it’s very tempting so um our Greenhouse isn’t

Heated yet that’s something I really wanted to get done this year and just ran out of energy and time being so Pregnant maybe next year CU if our Greenhouse was heated then we could definitely start seeds in the greenhouse and have them locked up and wouldn’t have to worry about little people uh

Wanting to go on a treasure hunt and pots of dirt so how about you guys does anybody have exciting plans like new things you’re going to try growing this year one thing I would recommend trying if you’re looking at something for something unusual is there’s a plant

Called a cucam melon it makes these little tiny Circle cucumber like uh I guess it’s a fruit but they look like mini watermelons like they’re tiny they’re like this big um but it’s it’s got a like you can eat the peel I guess what you’ll call it the skin on it

It looks like a watermelon very similar to a cucumber looking on the inside but they taste sour they are really neat and I might grow them again this year I’ve done them a few years the kids thought they were cool and liked eating them right off the vine um this is an unusual

Plant you can’t really do anything with them but eat them fresh you can’t really preserve them so you just got to kind of eat them as you go but those are really fun so beer family says we’re going to add FL uh flowers we may be crazy but going to it

At oh a flower farm like sell flowers that’s interesting I’ll be curious what you what you’re planning on growing JB says look like I’ll be ready to plant snow peas with the moon on the 23rd and 25th and Katie says I’m doing the opposite I’m seeing what I can get to

Grow for many years worth of leftover seeds if you have uh so if you have old seeds and you want to know if they’re going to do okay for you the easiest way to test germination is to get as ziplock baggie in a paper towel put three or

Four of the seeds on the paper towel and fold it in half and then get the paper towel nice and wet and stick that wet paper towel with the seeds wrapped inside in that Ziploc bag and seal it and in 3 or 4 days open it up and take a

Peek at your seeds and if they started to sprout little tendril Roots then you’ll know that that it’s good and by doing four or five you’ll get an idea of what your germination percentage is you know if only one starts off then probably not a packet you want to invest

Your time in but if three or four of them start off then you’ll know hey these are still pretty good I’m I can start these and be pretty successful this year I’ve had seeds that I’ve planted that were five and six years old and had close to 100% germination I’ve had seeds

I’ve planted that were 2 years old and you know had like one germinate so lot has to go with how you store it and also what type of plant you’re growing so Laura Lauren says those are also called Mouse melons that grow back every year for us okay I’ve never heard them called

Mouse melons but they are that makes sense they are tiny ourc says I’m going to put Hoops over my raised beds to keep the bugs and deer yes I need to do that too for my spinach and my cabbage I’m just not going to grow cabbage I don’t

Think uh this year just have so much trouble with bugs Becky says my plants are in the dining room by the back French doors I don’t worry about a pretty house anymore yes when gardening season comes you can either have a beautiful garden or a beautiful house I I feel like

  1. Make sure your straw didn't get treated with Grayzon (sp?)
I use cardboard and rocks ๐Ÿฅฐ
Sorry I missed the Live ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™
Radishes taste much different roasted or used in place of potatoes in stews & soups ๐Ÿคค my hubby was diabetic so I used radishes in place of potatoes in soups & stews

  2. My experience with carrots, they will get Woody once they start sprouting greens again as they go to seed. Saving the seed, I just pull off the seed heads and put them in a paper bag until they are super dry and shake them a ton, works great.
