Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Roses are very forgiving, and grandmothers eventually will be.

Back in the 70s, my grandmother had a beautiful rose garden. At the time she moved about between her children, we lived on her farm. Mum and Dad watched a gardening show that showed how to prune roses.

The following weekend was garden clean up, Dad pruned the roses, cutting them back to a couple of sticks each, Mum was horrified when she saw what he did, but he kept going. Grandma came home a couple of weeks later, almost in tears over the state of her roses. Dad got a telling off from his Mum.

The following spring, Grandma returned from one of her trips away. More tears because each rose bush had flourished with the most beautiful blooms she had ever seen. Dad was forgiven even had to show Grandma next pruning season how he did the pruning. The rose garden each spring was full of many beautiful flowers.

  2. Pruning roses is easy, just remember to cut the branches growing into towards the centre of the plant and then trim the outer branches. With the clippings that aren't dead stick them in the ground or pot them to grow more rose bushes.
Side note from experience I don't start roses from seed as they dont turn out the same as the mother plant. only by cuttings will you get the identical rose bush as the one you have.

  3. What a beautiful song. I always worry about pruning but normally just go for it. I am ready to get out and work. My poor Easter flowers were coming up, and last week we got about 13 inches of snow. My yard is still covered. 😢

  4. Your walkway is absolutely beautiful. Wish the workers here in Southern California were as perfecting as your guys. I Loved the music and singing. ❤️

  5. The first time I heard Michael was on IG with his wife singing Thimbles and Acorns. OH. MY. GOODNESS. I love that song and she has the most beautiful voice ever!!!! ❤❤

  6. I'm 2024 goal was to live by the saying: Good, Best & Best. Sometimes good is ok and it's better than nothing. The same goes for my garden and you trimming your roses reminded me of that

  7. This last few months have been a blur of trips and busy days. That being said. I haven't been able to watch my videos like usual. Today I went to find Roots and Refuge to start the binge watching to catch up. Imagine my suprise to find I'm not subscribed to R&R anymore. 😕 R&R has been at the top of my Subs list for many years. I'm just mentioning this so other R&R fans can check and make sure a glitch of some kind hasn't Unsubscribed them as well.

Also, and very important to me personally. (hopefully R&R channel management sees this!!!) I remember Jess mentioning linking an email address to reach out to for the course for beginner gardener they put out several years back. So that you could log in (the site had changed so it was available somewhere else now.) I did purchase the course back then. How do I gain access to it again? Is there an email address I can reach out to to request site and login info? Thanks in advance for anyone's help with this!!😊

  8. To everyone who wants roses, but is intimidated…Jess is right! I always thought they were fussy, but they were the most resilient plants I ever grew! Just get some and grow them, you won't regret it 😊

  9. My garden is still a blank field. My garden fence still a pile of posts. My raised beds still in their boxes waiting to be put together. It is soooo slow to get anywhere . I love your garden–so pretty!

  10. I think that’s a perfect metaphor for life just do the best you can and it’ll probably turn out OK.❤🌻

  11. JESS did you ever get the roses from your old house that Mia and the boys got you to grown at the new house?

  12. This ship has probably sailed but is there any chance that you could do a little how to with them on how they lay the flagstone? I would love to do some but definitely don't want everything growing back up through it later.

  13. My first asparagus of the year broke through the ground on Tuesday! It is also the first year that I’m “allowed” to harvest it. When I noticed it, I audibly exclaimed “Happy Birthday, little guys!!” This evening, there was a chubby fairytale looking frog in my garlic bed. I bent down to tell him, “Don’t be scared little toadie. You are welcome here.” Jess, you have influenced me in the most fun ways!! Haha! I always love your videos! I look forward to listening to more of your friend’s music- so beautiful. 🌺🦩💕

  14. One of my customers I help out every now and then in her gardens on my spare time has a Batchelors in horticulture as well as has been a member of the rose society for 35+ years has taught me a really easy way to prune roses to take the guess work out of it.
Look for the 3 D's when pruning
    Dead foliage and branches
    Diseased foliage
Disoriented branches (branches that shoot off in a weird direction and go towards the middle of the plant)
Always cut at an angle right above a bud

  15. I would like to know what the stack up of layers for setting your flagstone pathway is. Starting with the clay soil up to the mortar? Between the stones.

  16. I have been hesitant about loading Spotify but I did so I could listen to the rest of the album. I absolutely love it! What an incredible musician! I have shared it with all my family! Love it! Thank you for the introduction. 🥰

  17. Beautiful music thanks for sharing his talent with us! Love these videos where you taking around while you work. Helps scratch the garden itch while we are still deep in snow.

  18. Oh my goodness..I said "no Jess! Let the song keep playing !!"….God your so blessed to have such talented, humble, and set apart people near you..God bless you jess..

  19. Hey just rose pruning has 3 d’s to prune for sure! Dead, Damaged and Diseased! Cut other healthy canes just above a healthy Bud that is facing the direction you want the new branch to grow! Simple and easy! Can be painful so I would recommend gloves! Your garden is coming to life beautifully! Peace and blessings!

  20. you look like doing to me, I grew roses for a few years and the one year I had the blood red roses and a friend of my that came over and hung out for a bit and then we heard wife dinner for him and before he took to his I cut some of those red roses for him and he said to me your die-hard romantic and thanks told I would see him later and one thing note that as had cats come in you see a light where bedroom window was and 1 am and it still lite what a lucky guy so someday I will grow roses again

  21. One of the best books ive listened to lately was called "Oona Out of Order". Loved it so much and found hardback version today!
