Hey y’all it’s Manda and this is my Texas Zone 8 Garden and today we’re going to be working in the not so shady shade garden we’re going to be adding three new varieties of plants and installing a beautiful trellis that I got on Facebook Marketplace okay so I’ve been working on this shade garden since fall of last year done a ton of work on it if you haven’t seen those videos I’ll drop those Below in the video description they’re super fun this used to be a completely unused space literally they

Had drainage problems and all this stuff and now I’ve really turned it into something beautiful I’m really excited to continue to grow this on this year now I’ve already started some plants in here which are doing really well and I’ve got three new varieties but the

First thing I want to do is install a beautiful trellis that I got on Facebook Marketplace so let me go grab that and bring it in and show you what it looks like okay so this is the trellis that I got on Facebook Marketplace I got it for less than 50 bucks

Think was something like $35 and I’m wanting to install it right here in the center now this is my neighbor’s fence so I really don’t want to put any weight like lean it up against there like that because that would be unfair since that’s their fence so I’ve got a couple of these

Really old um basically candle holder situations that I bought from a Vintage Fair and I think when I’m going to do is install them and then use zip ties to attach this now this is obviously not a forever installation basically just something as simple as that and then coming through

With some zip ties until I figure out like a more permanent situation for it but I do want to go ahead and start getting some um more plants in here and to do that I really need to go ahead and have this in place I am really looking forward to adding some

Claus to the back of here I think I’m going to add at least one if not two varieties I’m going to put three zip ties on each side okay I think that looks really nice I think this is going to look really good with stuff climbing up it and this

Is adding some height to the space which is definitely something I want one of the things I still haven’t done in the shake Garden is install the sail I really need to do that soon I keep forgetting to measure and then be able to pick up the sale at Lowe’s when I’m

There yeah I’ll get to it okay I am looking into the Sun that actually feels amazing so I’m cool with that when I get the sale installed there won’t be as many issues with the sun I want to go over the varieties that I’m am adding into the shade garden today I’ve already

Added several varieties including an Oakleaf hydrangea pigeonberry a couple of hore just some interesting varieties of plants that are already here already had a bunch of established hydrangeas in containers and those are already starting to Leaf out which is really exciting okay so these were purchased

From my recent um tour at North Haven Gardens sorry I saw I saw multiple in the same day North Haven Gardens so the first thing I picked up was an additional um hore and this particular one is called wedding party shotgun wedding and this uh helor are also known

As Lenton Rose this is plant right here it’s not blooming quite yet but I’ll put some pictures of the blooms up there it has 3in double white flowers with a heavy concentration of burgundy spots um helbor are known as the harbingers of spring they bloom late winter um which

Is really exciting because then you know that spring is on its way and they can bloom up to six or more weeks at a time which is absolutely wonderful they’re just really fun plants to have in the garden tend to be a little bit pricey I will say they naturalize well in moist

And Woodland areas this particular variety is going to be 18 to 24 in by 18 to 24 in it’s Hardy in zones 4 through 9 and it prefers part shade to full shade and it is Evergreen in my zones it’s Evergreen in warmer zones which is very

Cool and it is said to be deer and rabbit resistant but y’all know I don’t deal with deer and rabbits so if you are someone who deals with deer and rabbits let us know if hore is actually resistant okay the next variety is this guy right here which is on a canus um

The particular variety is white water and it’s also known as Bears breaches and I will say when I looked at this at the um at the nursery several of y’all told me that this guy is a bear like he he’s a thug in the garden so we’re going

To be putting this guy in a container to contain it from taking over other plants now um this gets about four feet tall the the the flower spikes get to about 4T tall so the leaves are splashed with like a white variegation which is very cool and they’re deeply lowed toothed

Foliage and you can see by the texture on here um it’s rippled with Frosty margins which I love any kind of variegated plant I’m I’m in for that it is a rapid grower known as a thug in the garden so it’s important to know its flowers are creamy pink blushed flower

Spikes and variegation appears in mature plants outstanding Harding to heat and humidity which is perfect for my particular area because we do have an extreme amount of heat and humidity it is a perennial it gets to about 4 feet tall by 3 foot wide blooms early summer

To Midsummer and it is part shade to full shade hardian zones 7 to 10 and it’s excellent as a cut flow which is really exciting because I don’t find a lot of cup flowers in shade Gardens um it’s Evergreen but one of the important things is you do not cut the leaves back

In the fall you want to or excuse me in the winter you want to allow the leaves to stay here all winter and then come spring all you do is remove any leaves that are damaged or have any issues but you definitely don’t cut it back like a

Typical perennial all right the last plant I got is was a suggestion from one of y’all um one of y’all suggested that I get a leopard plant and this is a leopard plant particularly a gigantia or Giant and so this guy does get pretty

Darn big and it is going to go in its own container as well large rounded shiny green leaves and you can see just from there it’s beautiful 3 to 4ot Long stocks of blooms um the balloons are kind of like Daisy looking they grow late summer into fall tall Daisy likee

Stocks in yellow um that will rise high above the foliage um which will be really pretty the leaves reach up to about 18 in and then the stocks go like the socks of flowers go 3 to 4 Ines tall which is very cool um it is a herbaceous perennial Evergreen and Mild mild

Climates it probably will end up being Evergreen in my particular area it does Love part to full shade needs moist soil so we will make sure that all of these have um water going to the base of them I’ve got a drip line installed over here

It is very heat tolerant and it is deer resistant it is in Hardy in zones 7 through 10 I’m really already excited you can start seeing all of this like lush green foliage I’m really excited to have this kind of stuff in in the shade garden and really start to fill this

Space up I want this space to almost feel like a jungle um I want it to feel very peaceful I want lots and lots of green and different textures and shades I think will be absolutely beautiful so let me show you where these are each going to be planted okay this is the

First container we’re going to be working in right here and it’s already got a lot of great soil in it which is really nice what I think I’m going to do is I’m going to end up putting the leopard plant in here let me grab that

And I’m going to put it towards the middle just like this now I don’t know if this container is going to end up staying here or not I haven’t decided for myself but I do think the height of this container is appropriate for the size of the leopard plant all I’m really

Going to look to do is add a little bit of plant Tone fertilizer and get this guy planted up super simple and [Applause] easy I’m wearing gloves today y’all my Skin’s so dry from the winter that I have like cracks in it so trying to be a little safer with it so that I don’t get any infections in the cracks of the skin okay super simple on this now with

Shade plants you could go ahead and top this with a little bit of um Pine Mar pine bark mulch or any kind of March that works well for you um I think I’ll go ahead and do that we um are expecting really warm tents for the next couple of

Weeks I would not be planting these out um unless I was expecting warmer um tents if I was going to expect some abnormally cold tents in my area within the next week or so I would not be planting this in I would be waiting just because when you plant new plants

Outside they’re not established enough in order to be ble to survive you know 15 20Β° but the lowest we’re getting is about 33 to 32 and we’re only going to get to that for like an hour or so so it won’t be any kind of big deal let’s get

Some Pine um bark mulch just to help insulate this a little bit okay I said Pine but it’s Cypress and I’m not looking to go real heavy on the mulch especially around the crown of the plant but I am going to work the mulch towards the

Edge of the planter just to help retain moisture and unless we’re in the depth of winter you don’t really want to try to um save the crown of the plant right now or cover up the crown of the plant because you can cause disease so I’ll

Leave that open a little bit for now now one thing to remember about when you’re planting a plant in a container you might say that it’s hard zones 7 to 10 but when you put it in a container it doesn’t have as good insulation as if it was in the ground so

You need to kind of treat it like it’s one or two zones colder that it’s going to be that much colder so like the leopard plant it’s Hardy in zone 7 to 10 so we would have to go a little bit um warmer um for it so if you were in zone

7 I wouldn’t put this in a container because it might not overwinter you would be treating that container like it’s more of a five um when it’s in the container as compared to the ground I hope that makes sense for you guys it’s definitely something to consider you can

Also if you decide to plant it in a container you can just decide to put that container in a greenhouse or bring it in whenever there’s Colder Weather okay so the next Plant I’m going to plant is the acanthus um the white water a canthus and a little bit about this particular

Container it actually has some daffle bulbs in here and you can actually see some of them coming up so I am to try to be a little bit careful but chances are because of how big I mean I’ve got at least a two gallon pot over there I’m

Most likely am going to run into some um daffodil bulbs if I dig them up I’m just going to tuck them right back in I’m not super stressed about it or anything and I have had other plants in here at times so I’m going to go ahead break that up a little bit

Let’s add some plant [Applause] Tone y’all look at those AOW love it all right let’s go ahead and Tuck that in I think I might have to add a little bit of soil to This All right and then we’ll go ahead and top this with some mulch as well okay that looks good now once again this is a container so this is Hardy seven zones zones 7 to 10 and so we my my zone is 8 a so so technically we’re looking

At um zone six in this container I think it’ll be okay taking a little bit of a risk um because you definitely want to um it’s a little bit zone six is a little bit colder than Zone Seven which is its Hardy one but if I’m really

Worried about I can bring inside or I can just make sure it’s well watered and insulated with um mulch when the hardest parts of the weather come and it probably will end up being fine okay and and the last one we’re going to plant is the hore the shotgun [Applause]

Wedding and hore is Hardy down to Zone 4 so it will be absolutely fine not going to mess with the roots too much hore doesn’t like for its roots to be messed around with now one thing about hore is is if you plant it too deep it won’t balloom very well so one

Of the things you have to do is maybe put it up a little bit higher than the surface of the soil just to make sure it’s not planted too deep and make sure you can still get balloons okay so I have a drip system this one in particular which runs to the

Shade garden goes down and I have a closed tube have inch tube or 1 in tube I think that goes all the way around the entire perimeter including up to this bed it’s all closed and then what I do is as needed when I’m adding plants I

Punch a hole and I add a quarter inch line with an emitter at the end now I didn’t want to run an emitter to this plant this pigeon Berry and one to the hore each individual so I just adjusted this one between the two and that should

Be fine for them now for these two varieties these two plants I’m GNA have to go back here down below there is it’s right there uh the um tubing right there and I’m going to punch into that run a/ quar inch tubing up and place an emitter

At the base of each of these plants and they should be good to Go okay and basically what I’ll do is I’ll go ahead and turn the water on to see how much water is coming out of each of these adjust them and then stake them into the containers all right so we probably don’t need that much so we’ll just adjust this a little

Bit still have a nice drip going and then I’ll just use a steak to hold it at the base of the plant same thing with this it’s a nice good drip and we’ll just go ahead ahead and STI this in as well okay so shap Garden is still pretty

Messy I got a lot of stuff going on in here but this is really nice to see a lot of plants we’ve got some hore going right here I believe this one is I thought it was carlot but I could be wrong oh Glenda’s gloss um and then I

Have a barolo right here board that’s blooming and then got all my tags this guy right over here let me see let see the tag it’s um I’ll put the name it has a yellow flower dark foliage and a yellow flower um I think it starts with an L right

There and then over here of course we have our needly planted hore this right here is pigeonberry and Oakleaf hydrangea now we’ve got our cantis our Leever plant this guy will get planted up soon over here’s all my hydrangeas which really need to be kind of cleaned

Up a lot of this foliage needs to be removed but you can see that it is starting to Green up everywhere which is super exciting I really need to come in and add some um compost and fertilizer to these which would be really great but yeah looking

Really good do have some over here including this is is a coral bells doing okay ferns not doing so great but those do typically die back at this time of the year okay I have a Virginia here which is doing fine it’s putting on New Growth down here it’s not quite I don’t

Want to cut it back yet on um the older leaves because I still want these to protect in case we have any more cold spells but yeah it’s really coming along in here I think this trellis adds a lot to this particular wall which is nice so

It’s not just fence having the chellis and can you imagine having um a couple of Claus the chatus I think I’m putting here are pink and a kind of dark dark pink and a light pink I think it would be really pretty but yeah it’s coming together

Great all right I hope you guys enjoyed today’s video it feels good to be outside getting some plants planted I’m excited about that and um I’m really looking forward to Spring it’s coming I mean it’s less than a month away for my particular area which is really really

Exciting and really great starting to do swim work in the shade garden feels really nice I really just need to do almost like a cleanup day in the garden putting stuff away because I’m the worst about leaving stuff out that’s probably one of my biggest issues as a gardener

Is I leave out all the things I’m so organized in so many ways except putting things away but I hope you guys enjoyed today’s video let me know if you grow any of these three new varieties the hellbore shotgun the A canthus and the leopard plant let me know if those are

  1. Beautiful trellis! 😊how fun to anticipate the fullness of your shade garden πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

  2. My acanthus has gotten huge, I planted it last spring and the blooms were literally 8 or more feet tall. I had to stake them they were beautiful and the pollinators including the hummingbirds lobed them, I love this plant it looked big and beautiful all winter, I protected it when we went 13 degrees in my zone 8a Atlanta, Garden it will definitely be okay in your garden.

  3. I LOVE the trellis, great shape!! I planted Shot Gun Wedding last yr, it isnt blooming yet though all the others are. Its on the smaller side so far. I have two Bears Breach, one I planted the other is a volunteer. Mine arent variegated and are big. The flower stalks are white and close to 4 ft they stay put for weeks. Last yr I had a problem with white fly on the undersides of the leaves. For some reason white fly was bad in my area last summer so Im working on heading them off at the pass!

  4. Yeah he looks good that that way because if you put it up against that fence you can't really see it so I have a 30 gallons at memorial Park in New Kensington PA and I've been doing about 20 years so I love flowers it's so pretty thank you I love watching your different shows okay

  5. I like your trellis. I love the curves it has. I would suggest that you add two 4 ft. lengths of rebar to the center section of your trellis. Add them just like you did for your torch holders. The rebar will give you trellis added stability. Plants can be heavy when they get full. Looking forward to seeing your progress.

  6. Omg, I’m the same with putting things away. They should call me the messy gardener 🫣😳

  7. I’m in love with that leopard plant!!! I have the perfect spot but I think I will wait to see how yours does because I want to put them in the ground. The trellis is gorgeous! I’m still looking forward to your video on how you find all this amazing stuff on Market Place.

  8. I love leopard plants. Here in Pensacola Fl we call them Tractor seat plants guess you can see why if you have ever been on a tractor. They need to be covered if temp gets below 30 and they will stay nice all year

  9. You find the most prettiest garden items. I have been looking on Facebook market place n no good finds at this time.

  10. this comment is in reference to your post on heritage chrysanthemum. After reading your glowing recommendation for these plants, I purchased 5 from bluestone perennials. I remember when that company first started "way back when" and I used to order from them. I purchased a hardy chrysanthemum from a local one man flower sale last spring and there was one tiny twig of a plant for peach chrysanthemum . I wondered how it would do. It grew by leaps and bounds and I had a very pretty good sized bush in the Autumn. I also ordered some phlox and some tall blue aster from Bluestone! thanks for a great post!

  11. Rabbits and deer have not bothered our lenten roses even though they have damaged other things nearby. Confirmed by both me and my mom in Philly PA z7.

  12. Hellbore seems to not attract any deer attention here in North GA, however, my husbands weedwacker is apparently crazy for it.
