How do y’all and welcome to the Mr Maple show we’re on location today we’re at Dan Everett’s Garden we’ve already did a top five conifers so we bugged you for a lot now we’re breaking down his top five Japanese maples in his garden today this place is beautiful thank you so much for

Showing us around we’re with the North American Maple Society tour in the gardens here today if you haven’t already go check out how to join the Maple Society it’s a great group of people it really is um wouldn’t have met any of these guys without the maple

Society I mean to stand here with Matt and Tim and Talon Buck holes and Frank biles and some of these other Legends in the industry you get those kind of backdoor passes if you’re part of the maple Society so think about it join definitely check it out it’s a great

Great society so we’re breaking down his top five Japanese maples which is going to be hard cuz you’ve got some incredible Maples here on this location yeah when when you get addicted and you have over 100 varieties it’s like which one what time of year uh I’m starting

With one as my number five it was given to me by a good friend Bart ikan he found it as a chance seedling and is starting to spread it through the industry I think you’ll maybe find it at Mr Maple eventually he originally was was um evaluating this was his number

Nine plant so when he gave it to me he called it number nine and I said Love Potion Number Nine does that sound like a good name sounds good and I but he said no no no I don’t name anything by numbers so skip that well the president

Of the maple Society had the opportunity to give it a name because he also had one and he said that’s red sparkler oh man you zoom in close you will see green white red and it just Sparkles this time of year so I give you my number five red

Sparkler man if that’s number five it’s only going up from here I can’t wait to see what’s next this place has some great fall color going on let’s get into the very next one all right Dan we’re blasting down this list number four gets harder every single time I know this

Place is we’re standing under a giant shishira and this is number four what’s next jedo orange showing its peak color we just nailed it with a maple society meeting this weekend the conference just happened to fall in at a really good time and this one’s just showing its

Splendor at first I didn’t know if I was going to have room for it because it’s a little more aggressive than some that I have in the area tucked it up against this Bruns weeping and a u little bit of bamboo and now the bamboo is actually creating a little lattice work letting

The jedo orange work up through and just creating a nice little playful color contrast oh I love this one even in the spring this one is just incredible it’s almost got a yellow eye to that orangey border sometimes purplish border oh my gosh underrated plant by far one you

Could I I think it needs to be in the trade more I mean a lot of people you know already have a red and a green lace Leaf this fits like so well in there and I’ve had it be orange to like this intense shade it’s at right now I don’t

Know what you call it what color do you call that it’s it’s a blend of pink orange and red that right it is totally lit up and really catches the attention right now the uh great choice man thank you number Four All right Dan we’re all the way up to number three what do we got got a number three for your list Acer pum gisha gone wild baby this thing is fully gone wild today too this is on fire and is the creator of gagon wild do we know this

Guy yeah it’s Talon buckolz great classic to be in the garden I got Talon Buckles in my garden folks you join the maple society and you too might see Talon buckles and his lovely wife in your garden pretty good day right pretty good day when that happens yeah I mean I

Am living on Cloud9 today folks gagon wild one of my favorites I’ve heard many say it’s very much like shz you know debate it all you want they’re both great plants gagon wild has stayed very nice it’s right in front of my picture window and I look out to uh Koi pond and

Look through this beauty and I just every day it’s a beautiful picture oh that pink on red in early spring look at the pink on bright pink it is right now though oh my gosh this thing is fully in its peak fall color incred inredible looking plant and

What a fun one to have here in the garden awesome plant to pick thank you all right let’s see what else you got three all right Dan we’re all the way up to number two that’s a hard Choice when it gets that close when it becomes your

Screen saver you know it’s special all right what do you got at number two Autumn Moon maple I tend to be a little bit of a gold freak I love the peaches and oranges it’s showing a little bit of Summer sunburn here but you will not

Find a nicer peachy orange in the spring before the sun gets a hold of it it is a stunner it will take Sun a lot better than orium or golden full moon or excuse me just full moon but the the golden Autumn Moon is just the bomb we really

Love it he’s got the perfect setting for it here you got the koi pond going on behind I mean it it’s just a beautiful setup you can see that neon gagon wild from here the color contrast this Garden is incredible and this thing just really

Shows out I mean soon it’ll even be more orangey fiery you got so many colors going on uh whether it’s spring summer fall this one really puts on a display I get it at number two it’s a good choice man yep slow grower so it’s not going to

Outgrow your spot in a hurry I love that it’s got that classic sure solum style Leaf you get that big round Leaf really gives you some awesome pallet for all those color changes all right Dan so what’s number one on your list here this is a good

Friend of mine we call him baldsmith probably the worst name for an Acer pum in the market but when you talk about color they can go from green to yellows to Reds to pinks and on top of that this is my OCD Outlet as you can tell I mean

I learned a couple things in the industry or in my career and I love to prune to see the interior of a maple this one the way the leaves move and the branches move as it that grows gives you so many great opportunities to make good decisions and make yourself look like a

Pretty decent pruner with minimal skills so oh I don’t know about that this thing’s got a lot of skill added to it right here oh I the tree did all the work I just kind of listen to the tree a little bit I can tell the always prun is

Not just a moniker with this one there’s a lot going on here there’s a lot of opened up uh it’s gorgeous here yeah it’s a lot of fun and like I say one of my favorites just because of the structure that I see all year long

If you can look behind the the beautiful cloaks here the clouds you see a structure that is just a Heavenly very beautifully uh graceful structure and that’s that’s one thing I like about most about Maples how frequently do you prun on this baldsmith how how often

Would you say you touch it in a month I I hit it really good in the spring after the flush which many people would disagree with I hit it again in the fall just before cleanup and then I’ll go in in the winter and I’ll start

To look at congestion areas and start to take out bigger wood that uh that I may be feeling won’t look good next spring so I usually get after it two times with a foliage pretty hard and it’s a fun it’s a hot mess down here but uh when I

Can look up here and see the birds flying through as Heroku would say you see the light leaking through that’s that’s a treasure to me uh I I could see how this would be your number one tree in this Garden it’s got a lot of work into it the colors are impeccable that

Spring pink I mean what’s not to love about this it it’s gorgeous well thank you for your compliments about the garden I couldn’t have done without my lovely wife she is not just a bystander she’s the weeder I’m the pruner and then we collaborate on everything else so

It’s just a great Garden it’s a great outlet and uh we’re happy to share it with you well Dan thanks so much for having the North American Maple Society here through your garden and letting our viewers tag along a little bit uh how can they be joining the maple Society to

See some places like this in person uh you just go online North American maple society.org and uh it’s not an expensive organization people are they’re all gardeners they’re all like you they’ve all got these kind of passions so it’s just a natural fit if you’re into Maples

Well Dan thanks so much for setting so much you did to help this meeting get into place guys thanks for tuning in today take care God bless and have a great day number One

  2. Man that Baldsmith is absolutely insane🔥. A lot of time and effort has been put into this beautiful cultivar🤩. That Red sparkler looks super good! A very nice Top 5 and thanks to MrMaple for sharing this beautiful garden with us all! #japanesemaples #MapleMafia❤️🍁🔥!

  3. Beautiful garden and trees! Thank you for sharing. I may have missed this but can you tell me the age of the Geisha Gone Wild, please?

  4. Lace-leaf are not my preferred maple, but that Baldsmith has blown on socks off.

That garden is simply stunning with impeccable pot selections.

  5. Exquisite garden! So much love and thought and work in that fabulous garden.
Giesha Gone Wild/ Shiraz will not give you the rich pink in the spring in the South; it tends to be a bit more towards orange–not unpleasant but not as vibrant as in cool spring temps.
