Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Love Kristin Hannah.. The Four Winds was very moving! I had no idea how many and for how long the Dust Bowl affected

  2. We grow so many tomatoes! I have so many favorites and always over start to make sure they germinate. Not starting tomatoes til later in the month since I am recovering from shoulder surgery.

  3. GROW ALL THE THINGS………. And then panic because I don't have enough garden space!…. Using that as an excuse that I need just one more garden bed (got a plot on its second year that still has room 😂)

  4. Congratulations on opening your own merch shop! It’s exciting that your shifting things to be more in-house! I see you are still only going up to a 3x, do you have any plans to bring in more inclusive sizing? I’ve always wanted a roots & refuge shirt or tank or hoodie but sadly you don’t offer anything in my size. I have been an avid R&R fan since 2017 and I’ve watched all of your videos. It’s my sincere hope that you will someday offer clothing for all bodies. You’re a great trend setter and lack of accessibility within clothing sizes for larger bodied folks has been an ongoing problem for years. In this vein, since your also chatting books I wanted to recommend Aubrey Gordon’s book “you just need to lose weight & 19 other myths about fat people” it discusses a lot of the systemic problems with how fat folks are frequently treated and how we continue to fail our fat loved ones. It’s an eye opening and important piece of literature and has been one of my favorite reads in the past year.

  5. The Four Winds was very good. Interesting how people running from an ecological disaster were treated exactly like the migrants coming from central and south America now.

  6. You are adorable…I am still getting my goats and chickens settled in on our homestead and would love to start a garden, but I am terrified. It is so hard to grow here. Very windy, extreme temps, both cold and hot, lots of vermin. 🙄
You inspire me! I may not be able to start this year, but my goal is next spring 😊

  7. I started my tomatoes a couple weeks ago. Congratulations on starting your forever house. I have had custom built houses before. Changes made on paper are way less expensive than changes made while building. I suggest you input your plans into a 3D computer program so you can visually walk through and see what might need changing. Also, never put a door next to a perpendicular wall. Always put it about 14" away so that you can have storage behind that door if you wish. Look at things like bathtub and shower faucet placement – can you easily reach to turn it on without getting soaked. Be realistic with storage – better to have a smaller room and bigger closet than be short on storage space. Where are you most likely needing to turn a ceiling light – make sure the switches are at each entrance! Don't forget roof venting and stove venting, along with all the plumbing venting. Don't skimp on the bones of the building. I could go on and on, but I won't unless you want me to!
If you want to do a bloopers video, I will watch happily! And if you end up with too many tomato seedlings (is that possible???), you can always give them to someone in the community. God Bless.

  8. I’m starting my tomato seeds in three weeks. I started them too soon last year and regretted it. I can’t plant them out until May 15. I’ve started my peppers already because I know it’ll take a while since I don’t have a heat mat. I am in Western Oregon. I went to Territorial Seed today to get more onion seeds since I killed mine lol. I stood there and looked at all the tomato seed varieties but I maintained my composure and only got what I came for. Whew!

  9. Oh , I wish I could advise you to reel it in, but I live in the city on a small plot of land and I always go overboard. I seed my plants and buy from Luke…. because his seeds are awesome. I am in an even bigger pickle this year. My grandson is going to college so no sharing seedlings with him. Yeah, I’m a wild woman in the garden lol.

  10. Will you have a “real food comes dirty” shirt as a sweatshirt or long sleeve shirt? I’m waiting to buy that! Especially in the color you’re wearing right now 🙂

  11. This video made me just giggle. Jess you are like the quirky friend that I could just go hang out with and laugh about silly things which is awesome . And grow as many tomato plants the your heart desires… Why not 😊

  12. I totally agree about having an indoor seed starting space. I put in some full spectrum (sunlight) grow lights to supplement the window light and it's working really well. I figure I'm already keeping it temperature controlled in here and I don't wake up worrying about them in the night and I get to sit in the rocker and watch them grow. I started a flat of sweet peppers about a week ago and their birthday was yesterday. Do I have places to plant over 70 peppers? Definitely not! Planted a flat of tomatoes yesterday. 2 flats of violas are sprouted. 1 flat of chives are slowly emerging. A bunch of sweet potatoes are rooting. 1 flat of broccoli is several inches tall. I moved my abundance of winter squash today to make room for more flats.

  13. I hope you received the Amir Tsarfati books Amazon delivered. The first book in the series made me wonder what inside information he had about the goings on in the Middle East. I have enjoyed them all and hope you and Miah will too.

I would love to start seeds today, however I put all my seed starting materials in the shed and we have had over 112” of snow – so far – this winter with 2 + months to add to the total. 🥺🥺 Our snow is so deep, a moose just walked onto the back deck even though it is more than 3 feet off the ground!

  14. I’m wild and disorganized and sometimes let seedlings die too. I plant way too many seeds so I can share but I really need to balance work and growing stuff this year. It’s hard 😂

  15. Next video is gonna start “Y’all, I did a thing…” and cuts to her showing us 87 different cups with 87 different varieties of tomatoes. 😂🥰🍅

  16. So cute that you called your Gramma 'spicey'.. haha. I am sure you guys had loads of fun! I am in Alberta, Canada and I grow bedding plants to sell in beginning of May. This year I am seeding tomatoes and other seedlings later cause they just grow too dang big! Haha. I use our heated garage and lights. I gave away alot of tomato seedlings cause I feel your pain of NOT planting so many….the struggle is real folks! Grow on Jesse…..God bless you as well, always

  17. You have a gift, everyone of us watching feels like your talking to just us. your so real and honest . God bless you Ms Jess you are making a difference in the world.

  18. Kristen Hannah is my FAVE! Love Winter Garden as well and Four Winds is next on my list! I need more designs with the same style of your shirt! Its so cute and I love that red 🙂 I am a newish follower and I just love your channel! You have taken me to church on a few of these vlog sessions 🙂

  19. Jess can I just say I went and bought that nigle slater cookbook and it is everything you described and more! Such a fantastic read so far I'm about half way through it and have flagged a few recipes I want to try

  20. Oh my gosh Jess! Look at your plants!!! Yes, you go girl 😊.
I'm so inspired by you. Thank you and Maha, for teaching and encouraging me.
You and your family are a gift from God, to me.
    Thank you so much ❤

  21. Love the rainbow on your face. I always smile while I am watching you. And no we will not talk you down… grow all the things girl!

  22. Just curious if you knew about this documentary about heirloom vs hybrid seeds. It was an eye opener for me. Won’t b buying hybrid seeds any more.

  23. I am most certainly one of the ones who likes to grow "all the things" I live in the woods with little sunshine and my friends and co-workers benefit from my love of winter time indoor seed starting. I only wish I had a garden space to watch them all grow but at least I see everyone else's success with my little babies that I started!

  24. Last year, I finally got up the nerve to start tomatoes from seed (thanks to you, Jess), after many past failures. Just to be “safe”, I seeded more than I needed, sure that they wouldn’t all come up. Let’s just say…it got so bad that when my friends and family saw me coming, they yelled “I don’t need any more tomato plants!!” I planted 30 and gave away close to 50. 😆
Tomorrow is my seed starting day. I’m planning for 50. This may get ugly. 😂

  25. Down in Bluffton SC, zone 9a. I was going to try grafting, but didn’t work. My tomatoes have been growing since 12/29, and they’re HUGE! I’m hoping we’re past last frost on 3/1😊

  26. Not starting tomatoes until April 6th. There's no sense starting too soon. Peppers ect in March. To scratch the itch, I've been starting flowers like lisianthus, lobelia, petunias, and slow herbs/onions. Also, to keep busy will be winter sowing this weekend.

  27. I'm 67 and a wild one at heart when it comes to tomatoes and peppers. I want them and sunflowers everywhere. I also love carrots, cucumber zinnias, gladiolus, blackberries corn melons peaches, apricots and pears. There you have most of my grow list.
