In 1975, the Karnataka Government passed the Government Park Act restricting construction to single-story buildings. Despite this, plans to construct a multi-story structure in Cubbon Park have been introduced. The process faced opposition from activists and ended up in court, where in 2019 it was ruled that the park could house a multi-story building but no trees were to be cut. Activists have resumed their opposition as the government contemplates enacting the order. Critics argue this will reduce the ‘lung space’ of Bangalore, known as the ‘Garden City’, and encroach on the park’s space.
