Useful tips for cactus 🪴 | Plant Gardener

Sunlight:
Plenty, but not scorching: Most cacti thrive in bright, indirect sunlight. A south-facing window is ideal. Avoid intense afternoon sun, especially behind glass, which can burn them.

Gradual transition: If moving your cactus to a new location with different light levels, do so gradually over a few weeks to prevent stress.

Watering:
Less is more: Cacti are adapted to dry environments and store water in their tissues. Overwatering is their biggest enemy, leading to root rot.

Deep soak, thorough dry: Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. Then, submerge the pot in water until saturated. Discard any excess water.

Seasonal adjustments: Water more frequently during active growth (spring and summer) and reduce watering significantly during winter dormancy.

Soil and Potting:
Fast-draining mix: Use a well-draining cactus and succulent soil mix to prevent waterlogging. Avoid using regular potting soil.

Terracotta pots: These porous pots allow excess moisture to evaporate, preventing root rot.

Drainage hole is essential: Ensure your pot has drainage holes to prevent water from accumulating.

Fertilization:
Feed sparingly: Cacti don’t require heavy fertilization. Use a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer specifically formulated for cacti during active growth.
Avoid overfertilizing: This can lead to excessive growth, making the cactus weak and prone to pests.

Additional Tips:
Clean the spines: Use a soft brush or dry cloth to gently remove dust and debris from the spines.
Repotting: Repot your cactus every 2-3 years into a slightly larger pot with fresh soil.
Pest and disease control: Watch out for common pests like mealybugs and scale insects. Use organic methods whenever possible to control them.
Bloom appreciation: If your cactus blooms, enjoy its beautiful flowers! Water it slightly more during this period and avoid fertilizing.
