Let’s analyze the light here…
.
Current weather: overcast
Time: 2:00pm
.
1️⃣ 99 foot-candles right up at the window
2️⃣ 32 fc about two feet away from the window
3️⃣ 5 fc on the middle shelf – grow light absolutely necessary if these succulents are to live here in the long run
4️⃣ 3 fc at the first picture frame – no light necessary for these “plants”
.
Comments:
▪️Notice how the intensity drop off is super fast with even the smallest change in distance from the window – this is why I’m always saying “put your plants where they will have the widest possible view of the sky” – you’ll be happier with your plant by shading the sun with a white sheer curtain rather than hoping it will just survive far from the window.
▪️What is the underlying variable that explains the light measurements?
***The total visible area of the sky***
There is nothing in “bright indirect light” that tells you where you should put your plants or that the light intensity drops off significantly as you move away from your window (or the fact that whoever has bigger, unobstructed windows will have higher plant growth potential)
▪️If you don’t have a light meter, do your plants a favor and calibrate your judgement of light with the total visible area of sky and the duration of direct sun – not just sun/no sun or what feels bright. (Link in profile: how to use a light meter)
