Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Jess my questions about growing in a greenhouse are for this time of year. Are you germinating your brassicas in your greenhouse? How are you getting the soil warm enough? Are you using a heat source or just a heat mat? Or are you germinating inside the house and bringing your trays outside once they’ve come up? Summer starts aren’t my issue. Early spring ones are. Please help! ❤

  2. Bought a Strong Camel polytunnel greenhouse kit back in 2018.. lasted me five years… Purchased a replacement cover from the company… Lasted me six months… I did nothing different. Contacted customer service, and they said there was nothing they could do.. they have a three month warranty… Never again. They left a terrible taste in my mouth, even if you have a good experience, a company will screw you over and is willing to lose your business just to continue screwing over others instead of actually providing a consistent product.

  3. I was just thinking about the webinar today, as I was outside, in shorts/t-shirt, tending to my garden – in the middle of winter. Thanks for the reminder vid; I signed up and am looking forward to it!
On the cheap, plastic green house things – Last summer was my first season gardening as an adult (helped in family gardens when I was a kid). I planted in grow bags ranging from 10 gallon to 200 gallon. The 200 gallon grow bags made nice raised beds. I set up 3 of the tall 4×6 Birdies raised beds, but only planted in one, very late in the season.
I bought some of the cheap plastic "greenhouses" (I think Ohuhu brand). The "tee pee" shaped ones fit perfectly over the 200gal. grow bag beds, and the long rectangular ones fit on top of the soil in the Birdies beds fairly well. As you mentioned, I secured them VERY well. Surprisingly, they have withstood some high winds and some snow in our chilly zone 6b, northern West Virginia winter so far.
It was just going to be a fun experiment, since I direct sowed the cool weather veggies too late in the season. I am pleasantly shocked and thrilled that at least half of them not only survived but have started showing noticeable growth! It makes my SO happy that I may be enjoying some lettuces, carrots and even cabbage soon…in the winter! (RIP to my beets, radishes and broccoli though. lol)
As a 56 year old, fairly disabled gal, I highly recommend experimenting with what ever you can manage and afford to make your own garden happen. It's so awesome and rewarding!

  4. I'm actually looking forward to this webinar because I did try their site/tool in the past and found it to be too complicated/ finnicky for me — maybe I just needed more hands on guidance!

  5. We use a few of those little cheap popup greenhouses in our high tunnel and have liked them. But yes you need to be mindful of opening and closing them at the right times of day

  6. Hi Jess, I have to share something really cool with you. Like a crazy person with their first big garden I was planting seeds all over the place. I had seed packs in various pockets, drawers, countertops etc. I forgot to check pockets on my overalls and I accidentally sent chamomile seeds through the washer AND dryer. I immediately thought "of course these are ruined". Then I thought of you and said out loud "if I don't plant them, they definitely won't grow". So, from the pocket of recently dried overalls the tiny chamomile seeds were gently placed on moist soil and lightly covered. To my absolute joy, I have a container full of chamomile seedlings!!

  7. I got a SeedTime account about a year ago. At first, I only had the free version. I loved the free version so much that I now have the $10 a month version. It has helped me a lot with planning, seed starting, and succession planting. Their "layout" tool is very easy to use and amazing for people who learn visually. I'm excited to start the season with SeedTime. Highly recommended!
My Love is currently building a greenhouse for me, but I did have one of the cheap pop ups for the last two seasons. They are grrat if it is the only option that you have. They don't hold as much heat as I would like, but it was cheap and non permanent, so … I'd buy one again if I needed to! Thanks for the tips, I'll keep them in mind for use in my new greenhouse!
Edit: I do have a decent amount of greenhouse experience, just never in my own greenhouse. And the one I used was much more industrial and automated. So, I know what the conditions need to be, but I know there will be a learning curve to keeping those conditions.
    Thanks Jess ❤

  8. My first greenhouse was 5 pallets put together with metal bars that my husband had. I also used white 6mm poly floor covering…and it worked!!
I made shelves using throwaway rub rails from old u-haul trucks that went to salvage! I have a video on it (2020). You said use what you got!!

I'm going to do that same concept, except I want to use 2 x 4's dug into the ground as braces and maybe put a makeshift door on it this time. Really it lasted 2 years and did a fine job of starting seeds! We have a new homestead and a new life, same budget. Chickens maybe a stretch, but I really want to have fresh eggs on the homestead and chickens are the gateway!! lol They can help make compost. We do have hawk and falcon here so a static coop will have to do for now! Thank you for all your help and encouragement!!

  9. Is there a way to have top panels open and close based on temperature, I've seen this on other greenhouse videos

  10. I have one of the little greenhouse like you used when you first got there. It worked good for me last year.
I did sign up for Monday!

  11. Those cheap greenhouses work fine here in the north. Secure them and watch closely. We set up a cheap Bluetooth monitor to keep track of Temps. Lasted 5 seasons for us.

  12. This year we get to build our greenhouse. I am so excited for this! I’ve never had one accept for the little shelf on my porch so there will be a learning curve. I’m gleaning all the info I can so I can be successful. 😁💕

  13. Hello Jess, I plant pepper seeds in my unheated greenhouse, by using germination heat pads. 20 " x 60" long uses electricity and a thermostat. I use the plastic domes over the trays and newspaper on top to keep the sun from frying them. They do well overnight. Just sharing what I do. I love your greenhouse! Happy Seeding!

  14. I used Seedtime last year for my fall garden and it was really helpful. I used the free program.

  15. Can’t wait. I have so many things going on and need to have a keeper keeping me on task. Maybe the webinar will force me to focus. Excuse me…squirrel! 🐿️😂

  16. Thank you for this video. It's good know that I'm not the only who has killed their plants. Last year I bought a small greenhouse for the first time and because of my I experience, I ended up killing all the plants I had started. So, I had to start all over again

  17. I’ve taken a week off after the passing of my mama. Goodness it was the perfect day to return. My grand daughter Marigold & I are starting our seeds this week. This is our 3rd year starting seeds together, she’s 4. But what stole my heart were the irises…I swapped rhizomes with my mama. We are going to relocate all our irises in a bed by our greenhouse so we have something lovely to enjoy when we’re “working”.
    Blessings, debby

  18. Hi! The webinar sounds great but could you tell us whether you are sponsored by the company? I thought influencers were supposed to disclose when they’re compensated by companies….Thanks!

  19. So we have a 10' x 20' earth battery greenhouse. The north wall is solid cinder block with a shed behind it. The other walls are polycarbonate. We have five automatic non-electric vents along the top ridge – they open and close as the wax in the pistons heats up and cools down which is pretty neat. We live in the foothills of the Rockies in Colorado, so the sun can get pretty intense, even in the depths of winter. On warm days, even with all the vents open, we have to open windows/doors at the east and west ends to keep the temps from frying my plants. We have a remote temperature monitor in the greenhouse so can check it anytime on my phone or on the base station in the house. I have alarms set on my phone to check the greenhouse temp in the morning and in the afternoon so I can open or close it as needed; the times change as the seasons cycle through. Without those alarms, I would not remember and have fried many a seedling before getting the alarms put on or when I was at work and nobody was at home to tend to the greenhouse. I love my greenhouse, but it definitely takes some looking after.

  20. My neighbor had a medium sized pop up greenhouse and she had a thermometer in there that was attached to her phone so she could see what the temperature was in there without having to step outside

  21. I have one of those cheap drop-over greenhouses on my porch. We rent our property & don't have the room for any other greenhouse, or have a good spot indoors for starting seeds. I usually sow my seeds in February in it & it takes forever for them to sprout. Last year I figured out that I actually do a version of the Winter Sowing method. The only real difference is that I control the amount of water that they get during that time.

  22. I have a very small garden – 5 stock tanks/raised beds. I've used Seedtime for a couple of years now. It's helped me "perfect" a recipe for each of my tanks to get the most production possible from my little garden. Have fun!

  23. Hi Jess. My husband just (almost) finished our greenhouse. It is poly, not glass but I am looking for information of how to grow in it. It is 20 x 20. One wall will have a raised bed and I think the rest will be shelves tables etc….just guessing until I try it.
I am trying to imnformation about pollination etc in a green house. We will be heating it, but it has no heat yet (and is still missing a door). I am in Ontario (Canada) in zone 5. Any chance you can teach newbies like me thing that I need to know to grow in a greenhouse?

  24. I did sign up. I won’t be able to get done working in time, so greatly appreciate the option to have the recording afterwards! Thank you!

  25. Jess, this is my first full year with a greenhouse. Ours was delivered last June. I have true analysis paralysis for the first time! It's so tricky to navigate when the temperatures are ever-fluctuant. Wish me luck!
