Hey friends welcome to Gardening with Creekside  today we are working back in the signature garden   and we are planting uh some beautiful winter  color here in the four annual beds so let me   give you a little bit of a preview of what we are  doing uh CeCe is here we’re working together this

Is definitely more than a oneperson job and Mimi  is going to be coming down here in just a little   bit to help us as well and of course our furry  cheerleader Brena we went ahead and laid out one

Of the flower beds just so we could get our design  correct of course here in the signature Garden   surrounding the fountain we have four um uniquely  shaped flower beds that will always house annuals

Now if you look at the bed that we have already  laid out you’re like well Jenny what in the world   why are you not putting any um you know up here  on the front well we have tons of tulips in there

And while we AB absolutely could plant the pansies  within where the Tulips are I don’t know exactly   where those tulips are so we uh we’re just going  to leave that little space there and let that be

Only tulips but we do have pansies and violas in  here there are a ton of them so let’s come over   here to the wagon and let me show you what we have  these are um pansies and violas that we grew here

At Creekside Nursery in fact fact CeCe was the one  that potted all of these up one day for us we have   the Lavender Blue Shades this is a stunning mixed  variety of pansies that are truly just like what

The name says Lavender Blue Shades so you’ve got  anywhere from creams that have you know purple   veining in them to lovely um rich rich purples to  a light color just a whole mix of different colors

In here and the pansies of course have those nice  big massive flowers on them I mean like that is a   huge flower head just going to be stunning then  we have violas and we have the uh Penny Peach

And as you I hopefully the the camera will pick  up we have a little bee that has already been um   she’s very excited to come and visit the violas  but Penny Peach is as you can see has again and

Kind of that TR color to it really deep purple  a little bit of cream nice kind of that peachy   apricot color in it um and these pair really  really well together for us in North Carolina   um violas and pansies are that fall winter very  early spring crop so they will continue to flower

For us even though it is January and we’re putting  them out um the there are some differences between   violas and pansies so all pansies are violas so  Viola is the the big mother group shall we say

And then pansies are a type of Viola so violas  are not necessarily pansies um as you could see   the pansy heads are huge violas tend to be a  lot smaller violas have more flowers per plant   than the pansies do there are pluses and minuses  of doing them and that’s why we’re mixing them

And because of our sheer numbers and so um the  violas tend to be more cold tolerant where they   will Bloom even in through the coldest parts of  the winter pansies may take a break and then as

Soon as the the temperatures warm back up then  they start producing again and then I just love   the difference in the size of the bloom and  mixing them together so that is what we have   determined through some math that every flower  bed is going to get 108 of the um lavender BL

Blue Shades pansy and actually what we did because  we got these later on in the season we have um if   you can see there are two plants per container so  this is an 1801 tray meaning there are 18 plants

In a tray so we have actually 36 plants because  there’s two per pot um so our spacing is going   to be a little bit wider on here because we have  two plants per pot when we were looking see see

And I had to configure this is why it’s already  laid out before we uh started filming we wanted   to make sure that everybody would fit in here  correctly and so we went ahead and did all the

Panies of course up front and then came down and  did a window pane double row right here just on   this back straight edge of the violas there’s one  that’s sticking out that needs to go in a little

Bit but I thought that that would be really fun  plus we’re working a little bit from um shorter to   the tallest back there in the back now what so CCE  just got finished spreading out bioton cuz that’s

Going to be the easiest way for us to handle this  um is that sprinkled biotone on all the beds first   and then what she’s doing is laying out the penny  Peach violas so we’re going to lay out the penny

Peaches and then fill in with the lavender Shades  I have got a power planter augur and I have own   one of the smaller drill bits it is the three  3 in um it is not a heavy duty tip but because

We’re using so many of these pansing and violas  in those smaller containers this is area has been   prepped and so this will make less of a mess  if I was using my 5in augur so I think the 3in

Should do okay um if it doesn’t then I can always  pop over and get uh my 5in augur and use that so   what we’re going to do is just set the camera up  get everything laid out and uh yeah start planting

I think I think CCE said we have over 2,000  total plants that are going in here it’s going   to be gorgeous it’s going to be beautiful it’s  all going to be worth it so we’re going to get

All right my friends so the project is complete  and look at all of those beautiful pansies and   violas all snug in their new home oh my goodness  all of us Mimi CeCe myself when we got done we

Were like oh it looks so great I am going to ask  Jerry to uh throw the Drone up this afternoon so   we can get a bird’s eye view of how everything  looks but let’s go through and see everything

And then talk about what we did and what I’m  already thinking about for next year right   it’s never too early to plan for next year so of  course they are all nice and planted it is great

Just to see color um flowers in the garden yes  we had violas in the around the fountain but it   is so nice to get more color in here uh just could  not be more happy with how everything looks having

Those violas on the long straight side I think is  going to be really fun really I would love to say   that I totally planned that I did not sorry about  that we had a little camera malfunction there um

But when I went to go ahead and place the order  for the pansies and violas because knowing the   space that we had seeing it in in Hardscape right  I could actually see it physically see it instead

Of it being on paper and drawn out then it gave me  ideas of what I wanted to do in here very late in   the season my availability was quite low but what  I did have available were the lavender blue skies

And the penny Peach and putting those two together  I knew I had no idea how I was going to use them   but I knew that the colors would coordinate and  and go together enough that I could figure it

Out when the plants got here and we grew them out  yes it is late in the season right we we are mid   January we’re planting ours now because simply  of logistics we got them late I we potted them

Up late it takes time to grow them because pansy  plugs when they get to you I mean they are like   the size of your pinky very very small so it  takes a while you know a couple of months to

Grow them out but we just had a customer that we  always grow his pansies for him he’s a landscaper   that Services some of the major um businesses in  uptown downtown Charlotte and they always like to   switch out their Christmas decorations and then  put in pansies so this is the time every year

That he plants the pansies in uptown Charlotte  so it is totally acceptable to plant these now   um I just love all of their sweet little smiling  faces looking at us keep in mind right um the   blank spots are where Miss confection is going to  be um she’s already in the ground those beautiful

Tulips misc confection will be um starts out as a  soft yellow that turns to a creamy white and then   a nice intense pink so we’ve got lots of loads of  color in both you know all the beds surrounding

Here this is going to be a great fun spring  uh Mimi was asking she said so how long are   these going to stay in the ground when are you  going to pull them out and uh because that is   always a conundrum for this Southern gardener  because when it’s time to plant your summer

Annuals your pansies and violas typically are  still looking really good um and it is hard to   pull out beautiful plants that um are doing great  but for us in the South because our summers are   so intense and we need to get our annuals in the  ground and acclimated before those really intense

Summer you know heat and humidity hits so more  than likely I will pull these out somewhere in   late April and I I pray that they’re beautiful  I can imagine them in my mind’s eye that they’re

Going to be stunning and gorgeous but I’m going  to have to be able to get the uh summer annuals   in there pansies and violas are cool weather  plants they love these temperatures notice that

They have not wilted uh they are nice and perky  and y’all I mean it’s cool out here now I know   I’m in North Carolina and cool is a relative term  um but they have not gotten limpy or you know any

Kind of like shock from coming into the cold um  because they were in the greenhouse now it wasn’t   unheated Greenhouse but still it was quite you  know comparatively speaking quite warm so they   are cool weather plants they will not survive my  heat and humidity here in North Carolina because

Every year if I show myself pulling out PES and  violas it would never fail that somebody’s like I   can’t believe you’re getting rid of those gorgeous  plants they’ll last all summer no no honey no they

Won’t not in North Carolina so what I’m thinking  about for next year what am I going to do next   year um next year I will be well I guess this year  right it’s our 2024 I keep I don’t even know where

I am y’all um so 2024 so we will order these  plugs um in you know the sum time to get ready   for the fall I will of course plan this much more  methodically being in a brand new Garden that is

Less than just a couple of months old um I’m still  figuring things out and what I want to do so when   I plan our color for this coming fall winter next  year’s early spring I will make sure that we have

Colors that there’s a nice scheme and so I will  know exactly um what my color pack palette is   I’ll do that mix of the pansies and the violas  so wherever I put them um because of course now

I see that there’s Lo loads of other areas where  we could put them but you know how beautiful would   they be right there up there on the on the wall  so between the hydranges in the wall that again

Would be another great spot to have loads of color  here um in the winter time so I will definitely be   much more methodical and thinking about color  combinations and and things that I’m going to   be doing um you know in the coming Seasons but  that’s the beautiful thing about gardening it

You’re always you’re always thinking you’re  always planning you’re always adapting you’re   always changing um certain things succeed and do  great and uh but then sometimes certain things   don’t do great and you just adapt and you overcome  and you you just you know you change so what we’re

Going to do um is like let Jerry get the Drone  up show you all these beautiful flowers because   tomorrow we’ve got a storm front coming through  and we’re supposed to get heavy downpours 2 to   three Ines of rain so unfortunately I’m afraid  that these current flower petals um are going to

Be gone after a heavy downpour of 2 to three  inches of rain so we’re going to document it   while we can and enjoy it and know that you know  they’ll have flowers once again but having Mimi

And CeCe here was massive we could not have done  it without without the three of us we got we got   into finally got into a rhythm of um me drilling  the holes CeCe was moving them and Mimi was coming

In behind us and planting and then we would get  all one bed all the holes were dug and then we   would stop get everybody planted and we moved on  to the next one so it took us a minute to find

Our Rhythm as mama said she was like well we  waited till the last bed to finally find the   perfect system and I was like yeah well you know  that’s that’s how it is but we got it done and

They look great and I am just very very excited  as as always we hope you have found this fun   informative and inspirational y’all have a great  day we’ll see you in the next video bye friends

  2. Omg, those pansies are stunning 🥰🥰 Would you ship three flats to Europe?😅 Just kidding, hope people who can come to nursery will grab them for themselves next autumn. Really beautiful 😍

  3. It is just crazy how far you've come in such a short time! Can't wait to see these beds when they fill in.

  4. Jenny, I can hardly wait to see these plants flush out a bit and tulips showing off! Mimi and Cici are the dynamic duo teammates as well as Brenna! Love her bringing her stick to help. LOL! Mr. Jerry you are so good with the drone footage! This is worth a double watch.

  5. Love it, Jenny! The only thing I'd think would look great, too, would be to ring the quadrant with violas and putting all the pansies in the centers. That way, they would be visible no matter what side of path you are on. I seriously love the color choice!!

  6. Jenny, I’m on the western side of SC. I want to plant a few boxwoods. My dream boxwood is cold hardy, drought tolerant, true green year round, and needs little to no pruning. Can my dream come true?! Thank you for your advice. 🐾🐾❤️ This garden is going to be beautiful 😊❤

  7. . Hi Jenny🌺 . Well done . The view of the pansies and violas will be charming . Have awonderful week .🌻🌺🌻

  8. Beautiful! So happy to be able to see this garden from the beginning to now spring blooms. You all have done a wonderful job.

  9. Living in NE Ohio, it's weird (in a good way) to see planting of annuals in January, even if they are cold hardy!!

  10. Love the Violas. The drone footage gave me a better perspective of the space. Thanks. It's going to keep getting amazing.

  11. The garden is beautiful!, if you want to make it better, you can take out the grass around the fountain and put flowers in there, that would be spectacular. Great job guys.💐

  12. So glad of the drone footage, it sure helps with our perspective!👏 I can’t wait to see how this area will look! -25 Celsius here in zone 3 so this sure helped my gardening soul! 🇨🇦❄️🇨🇦
