Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. I was going through seeds last week to start planning! I hope the basil strawberry ice cream recipe is one you’ll be sharing on your other channel ☺️☺️

  2. I can't wait to see how the gobstopper tomato does! I've been tempted to get them myself but have too many other varieties i want to grow instead lol

  3. I love MI Gardner seeds❤ I get great germination with them.Already have mine in hand for this spring Cant wait to start planting them! Thank you for the informative video!🙂

  4. jicama is fabulous raw, much like raw turnips. Surprise your boys with a big bowl of homemade ranch dressing and sliced jicama. Bet they will like it with their snap peas!

  5. This is the first gardening year that I'm not buying new seeds and I swear I feel like I'm missing out. I always tend to overbuy seeds every year. It's like I think I have more gardening room than I actually have. I have so many seeds in my stash right now I could start three gardens! It's a good thing seeds don't really expire because I'm using all seeds from my massive inventory for this year's garden. Still, I love watching a seed haul. It's so satisfying listening to you talk about seeds and your experiences growing them Jess.

  6. You should try growing your winter squash on a cattle panel trellis. I found that I was better able to keep on top of squash bugs with them growing vertically. For the kohlrabi, I really like them roasted like oven fries. Cooking them that way was what made me want to try to grow them.

  7. I saw a Facebook short showing a farmer feeding her cows the outside of her winter squash one by one over the fence. They were crunching with smiles on their faces

  8. Hi Jess 🌱 Try juicing beets with carrots, 🥕 delicious! Jicama is delicious raw in salads. Or raw sprinkled with lemon, salt/tajin👌🏻.

  9. I would love to see you do a video with Luke from amigrardener❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤ he'san amazinggardener and has so much to offer and encourage beginners❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

  10. Kohlrabi – I like it fried. Cut it in how think pieces you want. Put them in boiling water for around 10 minutes, let it cool down. Then basic, flavor, egg bath, crumbles and fry it on the oil. It's delicious warm or even cold like fried zucchini, when it's hot outside this out of fridge with some cucumber and tomatoes, absolutely delicious 🙂 Also fried brocolli and couliflower taste amazing.

  11. Migardener is great! Helping people learn to garden… and save money! I'm excited to see all the tomatoes! I'm making a tomato greenstalk again. It works out well with the dwarves but I had to water and fertilize a lot. ❤✌️

  12. This was so much fun! Love listening to your brain on seed starting! I’m from Hawaii and azuki beans are a big thing here, mostly in mochi or shave ice. That’s so fun you are growing them. Very curious what you do with them.

  13. Jess you were lamenting that you couldn't have cheese with your Arugula. Can't you have Goat Cheese? The best burger I ever had was topped with Arugula, Goat Cheese, Honey, and Bacon. The buns were awesome too but you'd have to use your Mammoth Basil.

  14. When I'm working in the garden in the heat of the summer, I love blending holy basil, some stevia leaves and another herb, usually mint, into my vitamix with some ice and water. No steeping needed. It makes such a refreshing cool drink. You can make it as slushy or as watery as you like. I make a huge batch if I am going to be out there for awhile and put it in a good thermos. A good sun hat and I am in my happy space.

  15. Hi Jess, loving all your videos, really enjoying farmers table. I'm in the UK, would love to start canning, water bathing, pressure cookers worry me. Can you share sometime how to can pole beans, I grow huge amounts, and my freezer fills up quickly, id love to know how to can them successfully

  16. Jess, everytime I watch an unboxing I run to my online seed company and add a ton of seeds to my cart. And then I realise our seasons are inverted because I am in South Africa, then I begrudgingly empty my cart😅😂. It is my first growing season and I just planted a late summer garden and now planning my winter garden. My biggest thing is to not try and grow everything at once. I am trying a few brassicas, carrots, beets and onions for my winter garden. Some beans and peas as well. But I want to do EVERYTHING! Lol. My space is very limited but I am making my waiting room, my classroom

  17. Arugula with cubed cooked beets, thin sliced red onion and crumbled feta or goat cheese is an incredible combo w/ just a little balsamic, olive oil, salt & pepper.
