I am going to do a quick video but it’s not about you Zoe today I’m going to talk about walking onions I’ve got walking onions everywhere let me show you this this is the wrong way to grow walking onions so four months ago I did a video on all these walking onion bulbs

That I collected the little bulets that grow on the top and I didn’t have any place to put them but I kept them in a tray a little bit damp and they were growing now if I left them there they will eventually rot if I don’t plant

Them or dry up if I don’t keep them damp so either way that’s not good so what I decided is to take all these walking onions and I’m not going to just speed this up but I’ll jump so you can see what happened because I do have the

Video that I put up about four months ago they grew as you can see but see how I planted them not the right way but I did plant them where I kept them alive they can be removed out of this $1 trash can I bought and moved into the garden

At any time so it’s okay to do it this way if you needed to if you’re growing a lot of walking onions because once you buy them and once you start growing them and you take care of them you’re going to end up with literally hundreds of

Them and that’s why you can eat the entire part but I wanted to show you what happened to them from last September to now in January they grew they lived and that is a good thing though they would have been a lot bigger had I spread them out but well I just

Didn’t have the time and the space and I just figured I’ll keep them alive and that is a good way to keep your little bulbs alive during the winter and just take care of them until spring comes see how they’re all packed in there well I was trying to Harbor all the thousands

Of walking onions I’ve got around here in one container see how they grow that is not right but what I am going to talk about is where you can get them let me show you this and we’ll get into de details hi this is Robbie from Southern

California just going to be a quick video on walking onions because well I have so many videos on it and it is my favorite onion to grow look at how I’m starting a few of them here and this is what I want you to see here I must have 10 walking onions

In here do you see how let me pick a piece do you see how skinny they are and that’s because they’re overcrowded now this will keep them alive oh my gosh I love the taste of them oh my gosh but they’ll stay small okay now here I put one now these are

Babies they’re just starting to grow but look how big and thick that stock is even here see how one is starting to grow now I’ve got five in here they should do okay got one in here but it’s a real tiny one and another one here and

I put three here you can grow them any way you want I grow them all over the garden I grow them in my totes in buckets in containers on the ground Gary’s got them too and what I love about them is they taste fabulous this is no joke I absolutely love their

Taste oh my gosh they taste wonderful they’re easy to grow and you can continue growing them once you get them started because they have baby bulbs is what they’ve got and they’ll grow bulbs on the top now they are hard to find you don’t generally

Find them at your Nursery you do have to get them online I did contact somebody that does grow them and I think they’re a really good price for the amount they get let’s walk over here for a moment and I’m going to show you where are they

Sorry I found them I had them sitting over there with the other plants now here I just gathered them up and what I do is I try to keep them slightly damp they will dry out if you just put them in a bucket or a cup and forget about

Them and see there’s a little water in there I like to sit them in there and then they will start to sprout like these did let see how the roots are starting to form on them now here’s the thing thing once you get these in the

Ground like let’s say you plant them in the spring you can leave them even if you’re covered in snow they will pop up the second the snow is gone and they’ll be one of the first things that come up in the spring I absolutely love them

Look at the roots that are forming all because I am keeping this damp but some of them on the top did not get wet enough so I’m just going to sit them in there and then I can plant them see this one is dry but I think it’s still okay

Okay so it will form roots in a couple days now here is the thing there are multiple ways of growing these you can leave them in a cluster and you’ll lend up with skinny little green onions which is really good they’re like onion chives or you can break them apart just like

This I don’t like doing it with one hand but let me work it apart see okay and now you can plant them as individual onions just like this if you plant them as individual onions they’ll be bigger if you plant them in a cluster they may be a little smaller but it doesn’t

Matter because as they grow they start to set new onions on the top and you’ll have plenty more onions you can grow it any way you want now if it was in your garden by Nature they would lean over Touch The Damp soil and grow the problem

Here is in Southern California our soil isn’t always damp so they don’t hit the ground they dry out and you’ll lose them if you leave them on the plant once the plant the leaf turns brown that’s the perfect time to get them off though you

Can take them off earlier like I said I have tons of videos on them the reason I’m coming to you today is I’ve been looking cuz so many of you have come to me and said where do I get them and I contacted somebody on eBay because I

Used to sell on eBay I love eBay and she does have them and they look good and she’s got quite a few you’ll get quite a few little bulbs from her because once you start them you’ll never have to buy them again and that’s what sounds wonderful she knows what she’s doing at

Least it sounded like it she grows quite a few of them and I would suggest to get them now now we’re going to be going in the spring everybody within the next two months so you could get them now get them like you saw in milk cartons food

Containers with some potting soil start to grow them now and then as soon as your weather is fairly good you don’t have to wait like putting seedlings out you can start to get them potted up and outside here in Southern California I can grow them outside right now we don’t

Have snow so they’re not going to die back we’re actually eating them every single day use them for stir fries use the greens and salad you can use the bulb you can use the bulb bets if you wanted to pick these little bulbs on the top off and eat them in the beginning

When they’re first on the plants you can do that too the entire plant is edible I absolutely love these cuz they’ll get much bigger than this if you keep them and grow them individually and then you’ll have little onions to grow I also find them good companion plants when

You’re growing other vegetables because they don’t have a massive root system and you can grow them among your squash your lettuce or whatever else what I wanted to come to you for today is to let you know I’m going to put a link underneath I haven’t purchased from this

Person but I because I don’t need any I purchased once on eBay and that was all we needed and this way you can get started you only need to buy one Bunch but if you want to get a whole bunch going that’s totally up to you but this

Is a place to get them because unfortunately like I said you can’t get seeds they don’t throw seeds you don’t want them to throw seeds or you won’t have walking onions hence they walk as they fall and keep growing through your garden if your soil is damp and like I said nurseries don’t

Carry them because there’s no seeds so if somebody tries to sell you seeds go find somebody else to get them from check out the link below and see what you think about them if you’re looking for walking onions and like I said once you start growing them you’re going to

Have so many this is just ones I collected around the garden recently and you’ll be able to pass them to your friends your neighbors your family everybody and you’ll be eating them now if you eat the whole onion then you don’t have any more onions I like using

The greens mainly but of course you can use the whole thing too especially when you end up with hundreds of them so with that have a wonderful day hope I gave you some tips on where to get walking onions and you can start them now keep

Them in the window keep them fairly cool and they should be able to be put out in the spring when the weather gets good with that have a wonderful day and don’t forget to eat what you grow boy do they taste great

  1. Thanks for letting us know where to get some because ever since I heard you talking about them years ago, I couldn't find any for sale?

  2. Thank you so much for the EBay seller information, everytime you talk about your walking onions I always wondered what they taste like, I just bought 20 bulbs from your link . Can’t wait to grow them! ❤

  3. Thank You, Robbie! I have been going to do this since I first heard you talk about them. Ordered complete 10 mins ago, and added to my garden plan. Thanks again from Missouri, Deb

  4. Hi Robbie and Gary. Thanks for your videos. I enjoy the frugal days and the garden tours. And, of course, the hummingbirds! So, I was thinking that if you have any walking onions and sugarcane for sale, let me know in your videos. Thanks

  5. Thanks Robbie! I just bought one as I trust your judgement! Having a hard to find plant growing in my own garden sounds so fun and special! Excited to grow these! Thank you! I believe the seller only has two more left as I am writing this! Wow!

  6. The little bulbils are fantastic as pearl onions in creamed peas! I find the main "bulb" (they don't really bulb) to be a little pungent for my personal taste, but the new spring stalks are great.

  7. When I checked the links, she was sold out, but she has other listings and I was just able to buy 25 small bulblets from her. At the time I bought them, her listing said there were still 6 available. I just entered “walking onions” in the search bar and her listing popped up right away.

  8. Oh this is interesting. I purchased bulbs from her in September! I had to wait to plant for a full month because our temps were still high and I think a couple of them dried out. I’d say 12 of 15 bulbs took off. I had questions for her after the purchase about the timing of my planting and she was very responsive.

  9. I have walking onions from my grandfather ..I brought them down to Florida from PA. If I can get them to walk I'll share

  10. I used to have some growing wild in my yard before I knew what they were. Sadly, I moved away without digging any up. I kick myself every day I think about them.

  11. Did you do a video in setting up your concrete blocks garden. I seen them more on the last video you did on using tulle and order tulle for your garden. By the way I order me n me more tulle thanks for the info on the tulle

  12. They are planted and I keep trimming the leaves. I doubt I will ever get the bulbs. 🤷

  13. Robbie I started growing walking onions because of you. Now I have so many I don't know what to do with them all. Could you do videos about how you use them. The bulblets are a pain to process. So fiddly and time consuming. How else do you use so many of them?
