Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Very informative visual information for new gardeners as well as awesome reminders for us all. Exciting video for the Spring of dreams coming up before we know it, thanks.

  2. If the looks of our garden is an artistic expression, mine says I'm not an artist. Yikes. But it does grow for me. 😊

  3. Container gardening is how I got started three years ago. It was an easy investment that if I didn't enjoy it, the loss wasn't a big deal. Those little wins over the years have encouraged me to make raised beds this year! I was actually working on them today. That said, I'm still container gardening on our patio and I'm also trying grow bags this year. Eventually I'd like to change our yard into a garden, but one step at a time. P.S. Would love to see your mom's container garden and hear her input as well!

  4. ❤️❤️ For a long time now I’ve had to grow in containers due to back issues. I’ve grown all the things. Tomatoes, radish, broccoli, spinach, lettuce, potatoes, peppers and my blueberries are in containers. This year I added a trellis to 3 of my containers and planted 3 different kinds of peas. I definitely didn’t think they would get so big 🤣🤣, I’ve had to tie them down so the wind wouldn’t blow them over. But they are beautiful and taste so good. I’ve even shared some with 3 of my neighbors. I have lots planned for this year. I hope everything goes smoothly. Have a blessed day. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️❤️👩🏻‍🌾

  5. I love growing tomatoes and cucumbers in containers. I seem to have good luck with them. I am thinking about doing some bush beans this year in containers.

  6. Bless you Jess for giving me some wonderful things to watch and distract me from the horrors of the world right now. I am ready to climb in a hole and pull the lid in after me. 😢 Much love friend. I hear your killdeer birds! I have them too. SC also. ❤

  7. I have about 9 of the same containers down the side of my house. I like plates under them to hold water. If the plate is dry for a couple of days I’ll give it a drink, but I usually just let rain water them. If I had well water I’d run drip irrigation. I do catch rain water to use instead of city water.

  8. I used to always struggle with container gardening because fo the feeding part. I use comfrey tea or weed teas to fertilize now and things are fantastic. Our growing season is really only 3-4 months but the days are long and the rain is frequent to use up those nutrients.

  9. I’ve noticed all the big garden channels now are always hawking products. I would love to use them if they were free or paying me but I would not buy them. I find most of the products aren’t worth the price. I would rather be creative and make my own. Just personal preferrence.

  10. Please help…. Can someone please help me, I have several seeds that are just sprouting. I have them under grow lights and heat mats but I have a family emergency and I have to be at the hospital in another state for 3-4 days. What can do with my seedlings? Can I leave them in a dark room without any lights so they don’t dry out or die while I’m gone?

  11. Containers are great for growing citrus as well, often expanding who can grow them because containers can be moved to warmer spots during the winter!

  12. do just to give you a heads up i found a pack of watermelon seeds when i was scraping out a rv that was on my dads 20 acres so i went to a 50 by 50 area on my dads property that was lower than the rest of the property and i just planted the seeds by the time the water melon grew out that 50 by 50 area was cover in water melon vines and it was just normal dirt i did not make beds i did not use any store bought dirt and the seeds were old but after eating 5 melons with in a week i was tired of them and had so many melons so out of the pack of free seeds i found and i water them once a day cause my time was limited i started my mornings at 5 am every morning and never got home before dark 30 6 to 8 pm at night so not much time with them so all my extre i took up to the conor store on the weekend and sold melons for 4 bucks each in the store they were like 6 to 7 bucks each so i made roughly 300 bucks just selling my extra melons and the store owner ask me not to sell over their any more because he was losing his stock so i made a deal with him i said if i have extra stock ill give you the chance to buy them from me for my price of 4 bucks and you can sell them for what ever as along as i get my price i was happy and i split the extra cash with my dad

  13. well remember that old rv i scraped i made it a little fruit stand in i had to go up their and sell my items i used it 4 times in 2 years so i sold the lil fruit stand for 500 bucks to another farmer i did it all with good scrap wood and he got a good deal and i made money off of free melons by the end i made over 2500 for the season all off of seeds i found in the rv

  14. Thank you for explaining why my container soil couldn’t hold water! I’ve been gardening in containers nonchalantly for several years and last year was the first year I’ve dealt with dead soil. Can’t wait to get going this spring!

  15. I’ve planted my first greenstalks this season with a variety of greens. One stalk is full of strawberries. I fertilize with 1 pump of liquid Agrothrive every 2 weeks when watering. I usually water till I see it coming out of the bottom. But I’m wondering if my fertilizer is going out of the bottom as well. Thoughts?

  16. The farm is so farmy now. It’s so lovely, so pastoral and filled with farm life. What an amazing dream come true.

  17. I love growing salad greens and salad herbs (cilantro, parsley, basil especially) in Greenstalks. I’ve still not worked out the irrigation system properly but the structure is very cool and the plants grow so well, and I get to poke in a few viola or nasturtium plants for flowers.

  18. Great information….but your reaction to swallowing a bug was my favorite. Thank you for not editing it out. Literally made me laugh out loud after a very long day

  19. What is your opinion on using non-food containers that are basic clean plastic such as storage totes, dish pans, plastic pails, etc. (all with drain holes)? Big tower gardens would be nice but I worry as where I live we have very windy conditions nearly all year. I do not have sheltered places to place a tower where there is Sunlight.

  20. Im a houseplant parent and drainage holes are just as important as their are for outdoor plants. yes you can use decorative pots but its best if used as cover pots for plastic pots

  21. Hey Jess. I can only grow in containers. I have green stalks, raised beds. This information was so helpful. I have never had luck with my greenstalks but this is the year of the Greenstalk and the Tomato. Thank you. Love Bev from Oklahoma

  22. M mom had a worm farm. She had hydrangeas the size of your head. She had Geranium heads a the size of grapefruits. She credited it to the worm tea. My sister bought it for her and I for Christmas one year. I still have it but currently in storage. Worms were left with sister. Maybe I can put it out this summer. Just got to find the right place. Not sure that will work through winter. I need a heated garage or shed. I rent and have a new landlord. Will have to see what he willl let me do. For now I am on the deck in containers as soon as the snow melts. Struggling plants in the bathroom. Hurry up spring.

  23. Thanks for the code. I just ordered my second planter. Can you do a video on the best plants you've grown in them.
