January 20th 2024, Florida. Seed haul and Garden plans. (Retired Life)

It’s the end of January, but I’m getting my warm season crops ready. I think I’ll do a lot of peppers and tomatoes this year, with a few new things I’d like to try out. It’s busy, the neighbors are remodeling homes, dogs are barking at birds, birds are flocking around, and cats are running amok. It’s a typical day here in Florida.

It is a beautiful morning it is Saturday January 20th sun is really bright today these little cabbages all coming along wild flowers are finally starting to bloom some of them that I through in here along with the the mustard it’s a neat little garden bed of

Greens I guess for the spring and then it can turn into wob flowers as the summer goes on I need to clean out this mess here little W flowers and stuff that I think are pretty so I kind of let them go all over the place my pineapple this tomato that I keep

Forgetting about has tomatoes on it one over there here’s a bunch of flowers coming up everywhere and uh this Rose is blowing pretty pink color it’s crazy to think about roses the 20th of January although they’re not really thriving they are blooming so little wild flowers here

Coming up on their own and then these are all the flowers I uh put in it’s my variegated lemon makes pink lemons facated leaves although they’re kind of yellowy I don’t know if that’s from the cold or what pigeon peas are still making balloons my Plum is making blooms it’s pretty

Cool I really like this one here a lot the way it’s shaped I might try to keep it around for a while I move my grapefruit and um put a peach here and then put the grapefruit um where it receives more shade just so it has uh less stress cuz

It was I’m pretty sure it’s got some issues with Citrus Greening or something but this um Peach here is a Florida Prince I have the Florida king and the Florida Prince kind of side by side over here where I threw a bunch of wild flower seeds everywhere

Some of them are also starting to Bloom this Apple has little blooms on it but uh it’s got leaves too which I think is kind of funny Anna apple and over here in this bed all of my wild flowers are starting to come up here too and then I also planted mustards and some lettuce too kind of

Grow among them until kind of the middle of spring and then I’ll take them out of there and then just let the flowers take over or plant other things I don’t know I have turnips over here probably Harvest those soon of branches here to get rid of that I cut

Down um just a little more light through this whole area there some mustards here that pepper holding on there the limbs fell on this banana and did some damage but it’s it’s still okay it’s made a new leaf and everything more mustard and flowers and stuff there coming up pepper here

It’s almost as tall as me it’s taller than the banana um my sour off is holding on I’m surprised it still has his leaves cuz it’s been so cold but still has a lot of leaves and that’s why they look all spotted and stuff they don’t like the

Cold and they’ll loose their leaves when it gets too cold and they’ll throw them back I figured this will at least provide some type of winter protection yeah there’s an awful lot of um LMS to get rid of here here’s where I put the grapefruit tree and it’s shaded in the

Afternoon which will uh help with with uh stress and Greening issues if you grow them in the partial shade we’ll be back here by the compost and um we’ll see how it does all my sugar cane here coming up it’ll be really awesome to make some syrup or something probably in December or

Something though is doing okay getting some nice cabbages been harvesting broccoli I don’t like the uh broccoli that I grew so um I’m going to stick to the Sun King cuz I really like the flavor of that not sure I’m trying not to step on anything I love that this um du night

Shade just came up on its own along with this tomato got to keep them there as long as I stay alive this cage here is getting to get my son hard in the middle it’s nice it’s purple broccoli I probably should have harvested this few days ago it’s not very big but

Um never grown it before and it’s really tasty another random black night shade that came up on its own little cabbage I don’t know what this is over here I think it might be Romanesco Broadley perhaps or something I don’t know we I’ll find out but the rest of the broccoli

Here I’ve already harvested and buried all of the leaves and stuff cuz it was like it was pretty bitter tasting and I I didn’t I didn’t like it so I’m going to stick with the Sun King cuz it wasn’t B at all I was able to handle the Sun

And stuff here here are my tomatoes and peppers that I’m going to be doing also have my Cape gooseberries you see where my cats chew on the leaves on the orang side Cy here it’s doing pretty well you see this a long time ago it’s taking a long time to

Grow I also got a couple new trees I got another star FR and and I got this sugar apple or sweet flop which will also lose its leaves if it gets too cold that’s where the leaves kind of look a little rough it’s a little chilly at times here

Me so this here is what I’ll be putting mostly all this stuff here um besides the um starfruit tree will be think all this here and um all the way back to where that banana is back there that’s I’m going to be putting all this stuff if this

Eggplant keeps growing or comes back I guess uh it’ll stay here too this giant one I’ve been harvesting so many eggplants off of this and um it’s fling again and it got really really cold and the leaves got damaged but this made all new leaves now

So I don’t know I guess I have a perennial bang plant we’ll see it’s supposed to have another really cold night here so we’ll find out if it survives should probably Harvest some of these screens here and uh I’m just like taking with the I thought was one of the

Purple cauliflowers that I harvested um I’m just going to leave it there and then I’m going to bury it there s of pests just not cats birds are Funny I guess I should go inside and talk about the stuff that she planted that still just St coming up and some seeds that I some interesting things that I got some seeds doing some a few different things I have um this is just a dill this is something called salus or

Um Chinese stem lettuce we kind of excited to try that um here I have my heima covered so that the cats don’t um nibble on it since uh it’s toxic you don’t need the right part I had and go over all the seeds and stuff that I got I guess here here are

All the seeds that I have ordered in the past couple weeks and got from the store I’m going to go over the things I got from the store uh this is something from Back To The Roots I’ve never actually heard of this brand but I got some dino

Kale found this at um the store and then I got a bunch of things from Burpee from breakfast radish all the flower tender green beans some more colors this is looks like a type of iceberg lettuce something called short and sweet carrots and then I got some more of the

Sun King broccoli because uh I did that last year and it’s doing better than the broccoli I’m doing this year I’m going to try doing it again uh next fall I guess this fall and then I just got went ahead and got some flowers too these are from femor I got some sunflowers

Try um some color Cosmos some zenas some mixed carnations and I’ve never heard of this before but I thought it looked cool then I went um online and got um T but um I got two different varieties just because I didn’t know if they would germinate I tried germinating them and

It’s been over a couple weeks and I still have it so I have a few seeds left each one I’m just going to try putting them on seeing if I can get them to germinate one last time then um I got some things from True Leaf send me the little stickers and things

Um I got some things from their uh Mountain Valley seed company they carry some red onion M Gro onion some dazzling blue kale I wish these had pictures really cool looking and then I already tried to start some of these seeds um first these cubel Peppers so hope they come up

Here and from uh survival garden seeds also I got them from True Leaf I got this melon collection that uh it’s like a six pack of different types of melon that they had the yellow peti Honeydew tender Suite Georgia rattlesnake hails best and honey Rock try doing those when it gets really really warm here then I got these cucumbers which I thought were really cool because they don’t need to be pollinated so they will grow even if they’re not pollinated into a cucumber

Um they won’t make any seeds unless they’re pollinated which is also kind of interesting I’ve never grown um cucumbers like this that’ll be kind of cool to try out I might even try to gr some of them inside since I don’t need to worry about them being

Pollinated um and also from trul Leaf they also carry all kinds of different companies apparently I got um some let’s see here some mustard this is like a red colored mustard no idea how that’s pronounced but um looked like it would be really really good I love all kinds of mustard so that

I’ try that got some sword leaf lettuce some Taiwan sword lettuce thought that looked cool too it was something that said that uh you could eat is a green like an um ice CED green or more raw salads I got these Fushimi Peppers they’re supposed to be sweet um

Hopefully they’ll come up I put these in with the Cuban naels got these carrots they’re red obviously yod red but um you can’t really tell and got some celus which I’ve never tried before Chinese stem lettuce try that out and I got some hea which I’ve never had

Before grown so we’ll see what this is like since this um we go through the summer here then I got some things from Baker Creek which uh I’ll be excited to try I’ll give you free seeds when you order so many that’s always kind of cool um this is something that I am

Excited to try giant cabbage that K pretty small but still looks like it’ be a nice size cabbage so we’ll see how how it does here for me maybe not so well since it looks like it’s in the snow but I probably will start this like in the fall and then

Um great throughout the winter and then I got this giant kale which I thought was pretty Cool giant K and then I got some more Purple Lady Bo Joy cuz I really really um really like like this a lot only as it look really cool growing but it tastes great and finally some more tamarillos um these are dwarf tamarillo so I’m going to hopefully at

Least get some type of tamarillo growing um these ones here kind of remind me of um Cape gooseberries the way they look and I’m wondering if they taste some or if it just is something completely different so I’ll be excited to try and grow these these two bye everyone have a beautiful day
