Well yes it’s a little Bleak and it’s a little dreary out here hopefully you guys can hear me okay CU I’ve got my my mic underneath my sweater Stuart says you can sometimes it gets a little muffled when I’m really bundled up and you mentioned you have a hard time

Hearing but today we are going to do probably kind of a quick and windy Walkabout but I do want to show you um what is going on with things in the landscape at this point in time now you’ll notice that I have started removing some of these tarp covers these

Are those zippered sleeves that I bought um off of Amazon and they they did work great and actually this one was so massive that it covered up three of my topiary so you can see on the top there had been some new growth you can see

It’s kind of browned there had been some new growth and and it just had not tempered to the cold weather so that is an easy Shear in the spring not now in the spring I am I’m going to watch the weather a little bit you can see how I started to remove that

Tarp from there I’m going to leave the plastic surrounding the pots themselves because unlike having plastic around around the canopy and around the shrub itself which can prevent transpiration when the Sun hits this is doing nothing really but protect the root ball so I’m not concerned about that I’m probably

Going to leave that on because even though uh we have a heat wave of I think 40° today the temperatures are going to plummet again but at this point in time it appears to me that my topiaries have made it that uh the majority of the box

Would have made it and I’m thrilled about that again I might be saying that prematurely but as far as I know it looks like things have have held in there now one thing I’m doing is I’m going around some of my shrubs that I’m a little bit concerned about and I’m

Just looking at the interior and I’m taking my fingernail and I’m kind of just scratching so look looking for green yes this is that budley one of the butterfly candy budas and look it is still green there it’s got new growth hard to see on camera yeah it’s kind of hard yeah okay

And you can if you point down in here look at all that foliage so it’s fine now I am so glad that I did not cut these back hard because the branches that are tall and dead looking are actually insulating that tender New Growth below so I will not cut these

Back until it looks like temperatures are reliably going to warm up now I see a little bit of winter kill on this one on this Cranberry Creek boxwood and I will cut this out in the spring just this singular Branch but I’m not going to I’m obviously not going to

Do that now the better boxwood surrounding it looks fine I believe these were all Renaissance but I I’m just going to leave them be what what’s surprise aren’t we Troopers aren that’s my question of the day aren’t we Troopers to be out here and and are doing our due diligence to

Get you the Wednesday Walkabout now the pansies I am amazed that the pansies look so good now the violas the flowers on them are pretty sad but I’m going to again leave those on there to kind of insulate what’s below but the rosette of the foliage itself looks very very good

Good as does the foliage of the golden fever Fe once I clip back the surface that has dyed and because of cold exposure and I will do that in the spring as things begin to warm up then everything will get a good feed that will help the bronzing on the boxwood it

Will just really kind of catalyze things and get them going um the Roses they these roses seem to have have weathered it just fine the agapanthus at this point looks like it’s still okay but that’s something that remains to be seen uh this is the agapanthus right

Here and again I’m hoping that the foliage is protecting the the crown itself and and it and they will be fine in the spring but I won’t know that till it warms up now I did plant more of the Indigo Frost which is a little bit more cold hearty

So so we’ll we’ll just see um here is a surprise to me now I think this is my bad this is so my bad these these little golden holes from Southern Living plant collection I put them in this pot I that was stupid of me it was very stupid of

Me because this rip the the rip ball was really too large for these pots and I should not have done that so this little Goldie is just these two are not happy make it makes sense to me so it needed a bigger pot it needed a bigger pot so let

Me give you an example these two are pitiful again my bad not Southern Living PL collection my bad look at this one over here that was in a bigger pot okay this one is fine and I did have it covered I had it covered by this really

Massive pot I bought three of these massive pot pots online I’m going to color them in kind of a cottage gray make them look a weathered Cottage gray I love the ribed nature of them and I like the fact that they are weatherproof that they are a faux

Terracotta and they’ve got a very very thick they’ve got a very thick pot wall so if you can see that Stuart yeah there’s a double wall you can see here double wall for root protection with a 10year warranty so I bought three of these again I love the ribbing on them

And I’m going to weather these and these will probably go and live in the back but in this moment in time they were brilliant to cover some of my boxwood and some of my tender Evergreens but since it’s above freezing I’m going to uncover that today I did check these candy

Butterfly bushes out and they too are showing green so I’m I am happy about that um the other thing that I really haven’t talked about much but it’s one of the most frequently asked questions about the garden that I get and that is what are these triple trunk or multiple

Trunk quadr trunk I guess cuz some of them have four trunks all of them have four trunks evergreen trees over here these are yopon holes that have been pruned up into a tree form they put out these gorgeous berries in the winter I love the fact that you can kind of see

Through them you can prune them so that they’re very dense but I kind I like that skeletal look they could see it if it wasn’t BL and I like the fact that the ble that the breeze can blow through them which gives me better air circulation up here on the Upper Terrace

Now what I will really love is when they kind of all grow together as a transparent wall if you will so that you can see through them that they allow good circulation but they also give some privacy over here now here is a surprise cuz I came out earlier this

Morning and we’ve got a lantern Lantern down um I came out earlier this morning this guy never got covered and this guy still seems to be doing okay still recovering from an ice storm we had several years ago uh but I turned its ugly side to the front here’s a tip I

Turned the ugly side to the front so it can get the sun exposure to recover um but this pineapple guava which I’m I’m so surprised because it’s only moderately cold hearty and I gave it the scratch test and it is doing fine so I’m so glad that I did not prune any of

These things hard before it before it turned cold I also think one of the reasons that things tend to be doing really well is because the day before the bottom fell out of the temperatures it got up to what 66 that day it was absolutely beautiful and then the next

Day the bottom fell out and we were in in you know Subterranean climactic conditions so I’m very pleased with those and I’m hoping that the residual heat from that warm uh that warm day in both the soil and in the structures is keeping these things

Uh happy now one thing I’m also doing is looking at signs of separation or whatever on my new structures for example this window box that Kayla built last year and we have already taken note that there is some separation and we’ll come back and that and paint those

Those little areas so those are some of the things that I’m kind of that I’m kind of looking for um you’ll notice that we did move all of the topiary the the first round the Eugenia and the second round The Encore aelas and we moved those into

The garage so I’m I’m thrilled with that and So speaking of Encore aelas let’s go around this side over here well you know what I lied let’s go over here first down Lemon Lane because I’m thrilled with the way that the Miss lemon abilia and I mean just look here even

Though it’s so so cold what a pretty little Montage we have here of lemon lime Nandina and this Miss lemon abilia I mean what a pretty montage and then over here we did put some plastic around this and look here these pansies they’re going to be fine I think so hope

Spring’s Eternal spring is around the corner even some of my fox glove look like it it did it did all right thankfully we got some rain right before the cold front came through and that helped immeasurably but I digress one of the things that I was starting to talk about

Was the enors Alas and my friend Jean who used to be Garden editor at Southern Living magazine he and I were kind of texting about this and wondering how they would do in this bitter cold cuz it got down to zero it may have wind chills were definitely colder than that they

Feel colder than that right now don’t they steuart um but the Encore zelas I mean they look like they have just sailed through it yeah sailed through it just fine I am glad we put some additional mulch some additional Leaf litter around all of the hydrangeas um and again the the encor

Zelas over here I think they’re going to be fine because they had the the reflected heat off of the brick wall on the outside now am I getting just antsy as can be to come out here on a nice day and start cleaning up you bet I cannot I

Cannot wait because this is this will really be the first year for me the First full year of the Cottage Garden all of these tulips are just waiting to start sticking out their little heads though I am sure right now they are just under underground

Shuttering uh as I would be um look here there’s some of the Larkspur that I planted and it it just made it right through that without without problem it just sailed through you can see little patches of snow that we still have so I don’t know how much snow did we get

Maybe you don’t know total actually maybe an inch or two not covered stuff a little bit yeah yeah not a lot so as dreary and drab as it look looks I am still optimistic that it’s um that it’s going to be fine now let’s come over here this is something that in an

Instagram post I was really nervous about and that was I was starting to see some buds come out on this star magnolia and at this point I don’t know you guys tell me what you think I think they’re still okay I think they were protected enough or at

Least some of them maybe not this guy protected enough so that they didn’t freeze out we’ll just you know a lot of it is just patience is the is the watch word now Stuart was commenting the other day at how pretty the red of the obsession Nandina looks and

Indeed it does I think it’s gotten a little bit redder yes yes I think that’s um I think that’s good the I noticed when I was doing my my preview of this Walkabout that I had a a wreath over here that I’d forgotten to take down but I’m kind of glad that I

Did forget because I so liked its presence there I thought okay I need to put a spring wreath up there because I liked the way it turned this this not such a much door into kind of into something not such a much um yeaha still

Seems to be doing okay look at I these enor ilas now if they had put out any buds maybe the buds got nipped but I feel certain they will they will pump out more buds in the future the hydrangeas all of my hydrangeas that I grow they all Bloom on new woods so

These Moon dance uh the white wedding uh the dear Deloris I believe it’s dear Dolores they all grow the Oakleaf hydranges these all Bloom on new wood so anything that would have bloomed on old wood I feel certain if they had started to put out any

Buds uh on those that they would have gotten nipped and I wouldn’t have had any blooms but whether I covered them or not probably but in this instance I think I think I’m going to be fine because I just refuse to plant the other kind anymore um Stuart here’s your baby oh

Yeah the viburnum and it looks fine these buds they can really handle the cold and there’s lots and lots of buds on it and they they are fine um I can’t believe this gardinia this is a Southern Living gardinia look it’s got It’s got some green on

It so I’m so excited I am so excited diamond diamond Spire I believe that one is the the Oakland hallways look fine I’ll be it look at this oh wow they still have some icicles on them but as the ice melts Frozen in Time Frozen in time but as the ice melts

They’re going to be fine and I did put an additional layer of mulch on those which I’m happy that I did yes now here is I really feel that this so did not reach its potential year I kind of feel like the front came close to reaching its potential but the back certainly

Certainly did not but we are going to we’re going to try to remedy that um it looks like the water barrel is is kind of Catty Wampus we’ll have to fix that I cannot wait to fill all of my plant teres and we’ll put a link to these

Plant Terraces this is in my QVC line we’ll put a link to those um I cannot wait to fill these up with all sorts of spring spring goodies now what what have I been cogitating and planning about okay so this is what I’ve been thinking um one of the reasons this

Looks so unfinished actually there’s two reasons is because as you guys have mentioned over and over and over again I still don’t have railings and that’s what’s making it especially these back series of steps look unfinished but Hallelujah I contacted the guys at at um

Uh at Iron Works and I think that next week or or within the month I’m going to get my railings so I am thrilled I am thrilled about that that will make a huge difference here and it will also tell me where to put some of my pots on

These back steps because until I get that railing in I kind of won’t know now the other thing that that has been bothering me are these expanses of brick that have nothing on them so I am inspired by an Instagram account that I just love Harold’s finishing touches it’s in

Australia um I am thinking about doing some some expanses of trellis on this wall they would be framed out and things could climb on them and they would look good whether or not anything was growing on them so I’m thinking I’m I’m thinking about that I’m not 100% sure I don’t

Want to go crazy with all of the lattice work back here um but it’s something I’m thinking about and I’ve talked to Kayla about now the other thing that I’ve talked to Kayla about is that over in here I want to do a couple of things so

I’ve decided to go ahead and with a combination of brick and pavers we’re just going to go ahead and pave all the way to the fence and the walkway with those inexpensive pavers they’re they’re I don’t know about $2 a piece or whatever and then she has some leftover

Brick and so we’re going to just go ahead and Hardscape this in um so that I will have a whole just potting room not just a potting station but a potting room over here and I’m looking forward to that I still got some finals that

Need to go on here um and just this area really was kind of not finished I want to relocate the composter my compost bin that’s a mantis compost tumbler so many of you were asking about this I promise I’m not always good I forget to put this

Link but I will put the link to the Mantis compost tumbler and you can see here that indeed I am still composting there you can see I don’t know remnants of some amarillis blooms and um a defunct oh I’m caught L works yes um so this area is

Just looks like holy heck right now but I have great plans for it this spring yes I should have covered before you even comment I should have covered my terra cotta pots I had a tarp to do just that and and I didn’t but they seem to

Be okay too in the you know how hectic it gets right before it turns very very cold you’re living your life you’ve got all of your stuff you need to do in life then you have to cover all of your plants and um and it’s one of those

Cases out of sign out of mine because I had a tarp to cover that with and then I didn’t do it because why because I’m humid um you’ll notice over here that these are covered just in plastic and you’ll say well why did I cover these in

Plastic and not the frost cloth this stays in shade completely so the sun does not hit this in the winter time and so yeah so there’s not yeah so there’s not going to be that going to be that Greenhouse greenhouse effect um so and there’s lots of other things like I said

It looks like holy heck out here but I promise you it is going to transform into something beautiful this spring all of The Evergreens I’ve planted out here they seem to be doing fine even this Silverado of sage I can’t believe it when I scratched it Stuart

Look it’s still green it’s still green so I’m thrilled about that and I’m ready to pick up all the cardboard and all of the plastic and all of the mess and really start staging things how about we go back around to the front where it’s warm um

Here is my here is my other pot this guy was covering this guy right here so they definitely serve a dual purpose but I’m going to put a wash on these to match the gray I think they’re going to be stunning I’m looking forward to doing

That I think I’ve got one more that’s coming in yeah I ordered three of them so one more should be on the way um and that’s kind of just what’s going on here on the C as the Dickens Prairie thank you guys so much for sharing with me how cold and what the

Weather conditions were where you lived because man it’s been cold everywhere I just I can’t I just can’t believe how cold that is I was talking to my friend Kristen who lives up in Iowa about the our upcoming Scotland trip and she said they’ve got like 2 feet of snow on the

Ground so it’s not only cold but they’ve got all of that snow to contend with um another heads up on uh is it this coming Sunday May Sunday the after my brain is frozen 2st 21st thank you on Sunday the 21st we’re going to do a Linda live at 2

O’cl Central Standard time we’re going to do lots of giveaways can’t wait for that yeah our believe me our brains are completely completely Frozen um there was something else I was going to tell you so we have been putting up some of uh my previous videos my older videos

And the ones that we’ve been putting up are ones they’re as Stuart said they’re my picks I I seldom have the time to go back and watch my old videos once they they are up so I S seldom look at the ones that have been archived um but for

My own personal reason some of these I wanted to revisit because I wanted to see if I could give myself some inspiration I don’t know how successful I was at that or not but um I’ve started picking out some of my favorites both gardening ones indoor ones um personal

Ones and as a real treat this is in response to what so many of you have asked me would I put up the garden that helped Inspire my design in the front yard and indeed I will it was my friend Marquette Clay’s Garden The Bungalow with the Appley Green Door this was

Highlighted in Southern Living um it’s just a wonderful wonderful garden Marquette just does a brilliant job and so we it was in two parts the front and the back and I am going to watch that very very closely particularly um the second segment because I want to look at some of the

Stuff that he had in his backyard so definitely those are going to be coming up when are we putting those up tomorrow and Friday I think yeah I think so tomorrow and Friday and you guys won’t want to miss those even if you’ve seen it you’re going to want to watch them

Again because it’s it’s one of my favorite Gardens and I got so many many tips from that steuart I’m freezing me too okay let’s go in you guys have a great Wednesday take care now you guys are going to actually see this at the end but we’re shooting it at the

Beginning and steart and I are getting ready to go outside on this very very Blustery Day finally I think the temperature has gotten up to 32 so it’s at least it’s not freezing anymore technically freezing but it is bitter cold out and very very windy so it’s

Going to be you know kind of a quick walk about but I thought I would share with you my outfit of the day starting with my sunglasses it was a quick walk it was a quick walk watching this okay yeah yeah sorry my my chronology is all

Messed up but my sunnies um I got I think off of Amazon I’ve had them for a long time I like them because they cover a good bit of my face and they’re good on Windy days because then not so much can can blow into my contacts um my

Scarf is one that I have had four ever it was a gift from my mother-in-law and I really like it and I especially like it because it’s very tone on tone with my jacket which I got at Blue Heaven is it Blue Heaven or blue seven that’s over

There on Blue seven that’s on Mayan Grand I got this on sale last year um my oversized turtleneck sweater which I love it is so comfy cozy and it is not itchy I got this um from H&M my whiches are Banana Republic I’ve showed them to

You before but really I want what I want to point out to you during this outfit of the day are these wonderful these were a Christmas gift and what they are basically is kind of outdoor house slippers so Stuart was coveting them so they are rubber on the bottom but

They’re this soft fuzzy on the inside and unlike Garden shoes and so if I just want to run outside outside to get the mail or run outside to get an Amazon box or whatever then I can wear these you include your socks oh yes and my socks these actually what are these socks

These were some kind of promo for color Blends or something but they might I don’t know if they do or not but but they are warm and um I think they they coordinate very well with my outdoor slippers I will put a link to these this is one of those cases where somebody

Gives you a gift and and you think oh they know me so well because I have worn these pretty much non-stop here recently so there you go there is my outfit of the Day oh

  1. It was a horrific cold and snow snap here in Holland Mi. We got about 24 inches. I really mulched in October and wrapped pots with coffee burlap bags.

  2. I have magnolia, has buds all over, Roses has blooms on it, all my lilies are so tall, so this year is a big garden lessons and garden tests, which plant pass, which plant fail. I will journal
    All the garden life❤

  3. Where I grew up in northeast Montana, the windchill was -74 this week. In the summer, the farms still have beautiful yards and gardens.

  4. Wow old man winter go away we have work to do in the garden going to start herbal medicine planting all kinds of herbs in pots and raised beds. Eucalyptus you should try Linda and lavender too and Russian sage great

  5. Thanks for sharing your cottage . Will be good to get out in garden soon and get some fresh air SND smell the flowers my favourite part. I like plants that have a scent lavender roses Russian sage daffodils hyacinths. Spring time going to nursery she owes me a butterfly magnolia check that out the flower is so beautiful and smells Devine.

  6. I live in Sweden on an island with very mild climate for being Sweden. I used to live in northern parts with -35 to -40 Celsius (-40F) and 3-4 feet of snow.
Here on Gotland we have had down to -15 one night but we also got 1 feet of snow so I haven’t covered more than a few plants bc everything is under snow. I took even more snow and covered some plants completely.

  7. Stay warm! It was 32 on Amelia Island at sunrise and by 8AM it was 31 but slowly climbed to mid 40s….now that is cold for FL beaches!

  8. We have not had such cold temperatures here in Western Massachusetts, the lowest will be this coming, Sunday at 10 degrees Fahrenheit overnight , days have been in 20s and 30s , plenty cold for me , stay safe my friends

  9. There are many ways I love your channel, but your walk about in your garden through out the seasons is one of the best, hope you realize what a benefit it is to see plants in all stages, thanks to you and Stuart for forging out in the cold, rain and hot sun to help us gardeners out❤️🥂

  10. Freezing where I live. Hwy 2 in Washington. My tall pine trees around my house with thick ice. Sagging. My driveway is steep. So I haven’t gone anywhere in 2 weeks. Snow then Icy rain for the last few days with occasionally snow.

  11. Hi Linda! Thank you for all the plant protection advice today and for weathering the cold with Stewart! So, so so looking fwd to seeing your garden bloom this Spring!!! Blessings to you. Charlotte, from very cold and snow covered Michigan. ⛸⛄❄

  12. Thanks, Linda and Stewart, I really enjoyed your wintry walkabout! ❄️ Hope you’re now keeping cosy inside! 🙂
It’s icy cold here too in central Scotland, with lots of snow further north. ⛄️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

  13. Thank you for being such intrepid gardeners and this winter weather! Could you please post a link for the large faux terra-cotta pots you used over top of some of your plants? I’m zone 6 and always on the lookout for pots that can stay outside all year round. Thank you!

  14. Please, please when the time comes to trim all those plants you will do a video or 5, on how you are trimming the different plants. Also THANK YOU so much for braving that cold for our benefits! Love you and Stewart. Now go back in and get warm!!!

  15. Linda you are too hard on yourself. You have been telling us the railling is ordered. You can't make it happen any faster. Your backyard looks wonderful with all you have done in the short time you lived in this new home. I live in the low AZ desert and we are happy growing all of our cold season veggies. We hide in our air conditioned homes in the summer here where we get high heat days for months at a time. 117 and higher happen too often for us here!

  16. I can't wait for Spring. Counting the days the way kids count for Christmas or vacation. Planning & reading on gardening meanwhile. It's almost as windy as here as there in west pa.🌬 I get a bit scared since we got 3 trees fall last year. One almost hit my house. I will always be thankful to the other trees for holding it back. I Always forget how really freezing it gets until it gets on single digits.🥶

  17. Seasonal gardening is a challenge but the rewards can be wonderful. Funny how to me a chilly 50f day in November can feel like heaven in March in my zone (5 ish) area (Ontario, Canada). The architecture of your house, the hardscape and bones you’ve added carry you through the winter nicely. Keep on trooping!

  18. (40 degrees sounds warm to me) 😀 We are at 16 degrees today on Thursday. But it actually seems warm & feels liveable when go outside compared to the 40 t0 50 windchills we have gotten this month. But thankful to God for a warm home.

  19. I'm in Moore OK and I have also been chilled to the bone! haha! THANK YOU for sharing this walk about! I also have a lot of first year plants at my home and have been so nervous about loosing them. You sound a bit confident which helps me feel better. I can't wait for SPRING!!! Look forward to seeing what survived and if you lost any what you plan to do. I am going through this journey with you Linda. 🙂 Love your OK gardening channel!

  20. Yay! The Appletini Door garden. I've watched it twice and I'll watch it again. I just love it. Btw, don't worry about your Magnolia Stellata. I have one and the buds are covered in little fur coats and they are insanely old plants (remember they are pollinated by beetles because they developed before bees) They must have endured some pretty cold weather in years past. We went down to -12C (-10F) this year which is very unusual. In fact I can't remember it ever happening before here (Vancouver,Canada). Mind you, my memory isn't what it was! We have a foot of snow but the inevitable rain is on it's way, which the plants need desperately. Stay warm guys!🔥

  21. Linda Dorough Dixon/Mountain Park, Georgia/…Linda, Please tell me what the turquoise chest I noticed it this summer now that everthing is dull it is really standing out..What is it used for and what purpose…

  22. Linda only you could make a freezing garden walk about so very interesting. Thank you so much for braving the cold for us You are the best

  23. It is snowing today here in Connecticut. But we will not be receiving more than an inch or two…. But right now it looks like a day long event. ❤😂
