My Review Of 3 Remarkable Fall Tomato Varieties

On today’s 2 minute garden tip, I share my review of 3 remarkable fall tomato varieties. Growing fall tomatoes can be challenging! Gardeners often run out of warmth before the tomatoes ripen, so choosing the correct tomato varieties that can handle cool fall weather is critical!

I grew three determinate tomatoes in my fall garden: Legend, Red Snapper and Celebrity Plus. These tomatoes had a challenging start to life and were clobbered by 2 tropical storms in a 3 week period, yet miraculously, these remarkable tomato plants recovered, regrew and produced lots of tomatoes. This is the result of my fall tomato growing experiment!

What’s growing on gardeners on today’s 2-minute Garden tip I’m going to show you three types of determinate tomatoes that I grew in my fall Garden this year and I want to show you the differences between all three varieties so you can see which ones perform the best in a

Fall gardening scenario I grew three determinate tomato varieties in my fall Garden this year they are Legend celebrity plus and red snapper and the reason why I selected these varieties is because they’re supposed to be pretty disease resistant and because they are determinant variey they spend all of

Their time ripening the fruit once they form instead of growing vines so they’re generally speaking a better selection for fall gardening than indeterminant varieties however I had a problem I got hit with two tropical storms over the course of 2 or 3 weeks back in August it

Damaged my plants twice and they had to grow back from dieback so it set them back easily a month and I’m not going to get a great harvest but this video should still show you which ones are the most productive for a fall gardening scenario these two tomato plants growing

In the straw Bell right here are my Legend Tomatoes now Legend was bred from the same breeding program as settes and it was specifically bred to ripen in really cool conditions like they get in coastal Oregon where they don’t get warm summer days this is the only variety

That has consistently ripened some fruit for me they have been of pretty decent quality good taste now I’ve had success with the variety settes before but the problem is it’s super disease susceptible I’m seeing Legend being a lot more disease resistant most of the leaves especially the newer growth look

Absolutely fantastic it’s still flowering profusely some of the older leaves have some spotting and disease on it but it’s kind of just laughing off the disease so this one I would highly recommend for fall gardening then over here you have two varieties celebrity plus and red snapper my red snapper

Plants got beaten up by disease you can see all of the disease on the lower leaves right here that surprised me because this is supposed to be a variety that’s pretty good in the South I did pick a tomato or two off of it but they

Rotted on me as of right now I can’t say this is a good variety for fall gardening it doesn’t seem to like the cooler temperatures however I am going to try this again in the spring it’s supposed to be very heat resistant you can see the splitting and the problems

That the fruits are having now this celebrity plus variety on the other hand the leaves are pristine I can’t believe how beautiful and perfect all the leaves are and this plant got battered both of these plants got battered from the storm yet they are some of the most beautiful

Leaves I have ever seen so in terms of Summer gardening I can’t wait to grow this again however because they got so battered I can’t seem to get any production off of them there are tomatoes on the plants but uh they’re kind of sparse and while they do look a

Lot better and they’re handling the cool temperatures better than the red snapper variety I can’t say this worked out well for me they just seem to want heat more so I can’t really recommend these two for fall gardening plants now remember I live in coastal Southeastern North Carolina Zone 8B if you live

Considerably south of me like in southern South Carolina Georgia Texas the Gulf Coast Florida Southern California you may have better luck with those fall varieties than I had however for me my Falls just aren’t warm enough and long enough however if you’re in my general vicinity or north of me it looks

Like that Legend variety is a really good variety to grow and if you don’t have the disease problems that I have I would also recommend settes if you want a determinate style slicing tomato and that’s today’s 2minute Garden tip if you’re new to the Channel please consider subscribing and hitting the

  1. I always grow Celebrity with great results. Mine are also still producing. I have Red Snapper seeds to try for the first time in the spring. I've never grown Legend. Where did you buy your seeds? I'll try them for my fall tomatoes next year. Thanks 😊

  2. I am amazed at how many of my greens are still going. We’ve had several nights in the 20s and I’ve even got new greens sprouting up.🌱

  3. How’s the Legend flavor? I got some Legend seeds because of a shipping mix up, and was planning on giving them away since we have extremely limited space (14×15’ community garden plot) and the description didn’t sound too interesting. But now I’m thinking it might be a decent option to succession plant when my non-resistant varieties succumb to fusarium in August…

  4. How early do you start your spring tomatoes indoors? I found amazing success this summer and a fall with the determinate Black Sea man! My new favorite tomato!

  5. Hi! Excited to plant my Davidor shallot seeds after winter solstice. Celebrity doesn't work for me in 9b 🤔 my fall tomato pics: bella rosa, large red cherry and now Tropic VFN (so far, good 👍🏽)

  6. I'll have to try Legend and Siletz but some in pots. Fall tomatoes have been a bust for me two years in a row. Last year I did indeterminates and thought that was the problem due to timing. This year I did cherry tomatoes and determinates and still failed. I think my weather is the problem. September was so hot I wasn't getting any fruit set even with the cherry tomatoes until it was turning into October. Then right before Halloween we had two nights in a row of hard freezes (24-25F). They survived the first night but the second night is what killed them off.

  7. I'm in Houston Tx 9B and I've had great luck with Yellow Patio Choice this fall. It's a yellow cherry tomato and is SUPER delicious. I love to cook with it. Because it's a cherry, it ripened fast and has been producing since mid October; my other fall tomatoes have only given me a couple of fruits. One thing, the packet size is a LIE; they say it's 15-18" tall and mine are in the neighborhood of 4-5 feet. It's worth it though. I've got some more already started for next spring to start under milk jug greenhouses.
