Well hey friends you’re at that 1870s Homestead and my name is Rachel and we are officially planning the 2024 Garden I got my big backx of seeds out earlier today it’s no longer in here with me but I did pull out the seeds that I need um

That I need to start wrapping my brain around for gardening this year and that’s something that you can be doing right now where you are in your home in the quiet of the winter the Stillness the you know short days long evenings and just sit down and think

Through what do you want to grow how much do you want to grow start researching it if there’re things new to you or you want to grow something different in a different way um maybe you want to try a couple new gardening techniques the winter is a fantastic time to

Research those things so I did just publish a garden planner and I’m using it myself for planning out this year’s garden and one of the things that I needed to Think Through was my goals like what do I want to get out of this year’s garden and that’s where my brain

Always starts and it can be things very textul like um you know I just need to restock my pantry goal number one right but sure I could do that but really it comes down to I want to have a lot of joy in gardening again this year so my theme of

My garden this year is to have a joyful space a joyful and abundant space a beautiful space and what do I need to do to achieve those things you keep the weed pressure down I need to lay it out properly so it’s well manageable it doesn’t take a lot of

Work um and just things like that are kind of like the themes of my goals but I don’t want to influence your garden goals your garden goals may be something completely different but uh Beyond just the tangible things think about what makes gardening fun for you or gardening

Something that fills your heart um that makes you a better person through the experience and what about growing food for you for your home um can help you achieve more than just the food itself but those happy moments and those joyful moments that I know that that’s just something that I’m

Really focused on this year but I need to why I start so it’s the end of December and I’m going to be starting out planning this year because soon enough in January early February I need to start some of my first seeds so Now’s the

Time I tell you guys some things that um I identified early on and this is day one of garden planning for the 2024 season so I was shy two packs of seeds for carrots so I need to go and order carrots before they’re all gone and I

Needed to order my onion starts um I do buy so we live in Michigan and I need to grow long day onions um and I’ve found personally for me my best success comes from starting with an onion start which is basically um a firste onion growing that a

Producer has started the plant um and then I take that be root plant and plant it in my garden and that’s where I get the best success growing onions um so I did order my onion starts this morning I ordered them from dixondale farms they’re down in

Texas um so they’ll get shipped and you get to pick your ship dates they give you a recommended based off your ZIP code but you can adjust it and uh so they’ll ship to me in the second week of April for planting um those are the two main

Things so but we’re going to get into this like one of the pages of the garden planner is like the what when how page like this is really what I’m thinking about today is like things I have to purchase right so um the carrot seeds the onion seeds I need to get some

Deciding in my mind to go out and do inventory of my seed trays um I know I need to purchase some new miza fungi um so just those kinds of things I’m thinking about now which gives me time to plan for it to budget for it to shop

For it wisely over the next few months before we really start needing those things and having to um consume them um and then the other main thing is kind of like really starting through on the seed starting schedule so knowing that you know right out of the gate in

January are going to be things like getting my C rest started um getting my sweet potato slip started in early February um I feel like oh I might start artichokes this year and asparagus a couple more things that I might pull forward the indoor seed starting just to

Make sure I have the best success when it comes time to trans planting them outside so those are all things I’m thinking about do you guys want to see some of the seeds I pulled for planning to Garden I won’t go through all of them because we’ll do a more in-depth kind

Of going over everything let me strain you guys out you’re a little crooked okay hope you guys all had a very merry Christmas we did it’s a few days after now and um it’s all quiet in the house again everybody’s gone so I haven’t grown parsley in a few

Years it happened to stick around and self seed um for quite a few years the last time I planted it so it’s time it didn’t come back last year so um time to plant some more uh parsley um I’m going to going to try growing red noodle beans this year for

My green beans for green bean Replacements so they grow like um on a vine that you’ll need to Trellis and they’ll grow uh like each Bean can be up to 2 to three fet long they’re stringless and you just break up those bean pods and when you can them

They do turn green and they’re great green bean source so we’re going to try that if it doesn’t work I’ll have a long enough season that I can do some bush beans and still get some bush beans uh bell peppers um I really love the um ALB at

Cucumber um the beit alpha cucumber that’s what it is and I learned about this one from oh gosh names are slipping my mind right now I’m not thinking straight but it is is a great producer of cucumbers I grew this last year well not last year

But the year before and we’ll grow it again um of course our jalapenos we grow those every year more bell peppers so this is my favorite carrot hopefully you guys can see it is called the danverse carrot um from Mi Gardener and I have two packets I need two two or three more

Packets of carrots um my favorite peas are Lincoln peas see if that’ll Focus yep Lincoln peas great producers long pods so we have lots of Lincoln peas and I have some a different type of PE too when I get to it I’ll show you so one of the

Things that makes a garden joyful for me is flowers so I’ve pulled out all the flowers that I want to plant in my garden so it’s bachelor’s buttons teddy bear sunflowers and NS and Mar Golds so I’ve got all of those I even pulled out some chamomile

Okay and I can you believe it I have never ever never ever ever grown butternut squash it is a staple so another thing that I’m thinking through when it comes to my garden being highly productive um a joyful space that is feeding my family well one of the

Thoughts in the back of my mind I stood the definition of that and what that means is growing food that’s very nutrient de dense and that stores very well um so butternut squash is one of those things that will store for a very long time up to a year or more and so

We’re going to try growing butternut squash for the first time our sugar pie pumpkins zucchini more pumpkins so I’m trying trying not to tell you everything because oh so here’s the other PE that I really enjoyed growing this year in my green stock that did really well it is the super Snappy

Pee super Snappy and also really long pods filled with nice size peas in it okay here’s my first ask of you guys D so I I can grow D Dill grows okay here for me but I never get those huge massive Dill plants I’ll get like a

Small Dill plant with a few shoots on it so what’s the trick to Growing those and I do the one frety I have is the mammoth Dill it just never gets Mammoth for me so if you guys know the trick to those big beautiful Dill plants please leave

It in the comments below because I really want to do that well so other great nutrient-dense crops broccoli um we’re growing celery again so I grew celery for the first time very successfully a couple Garden seasons ago and was really surprised with how well

It did and we’ve used it quite a lot we chose to freeze dry most of it we use the celery powder from the celery leaves a ton um so it’s definitely become a staple in our house and I will definitely grow that um corn lots more broccoli our

Cabbages probably the thing people like to talk about the most in the gardening World other than maybe herbs so basil um I already have like a um peral herb garden um are tomatoes so let’s talk about the variety of tomatoes I’ve chosen this year so we’re going to do some Paul

Robeson Tomatoes maybe one or two of in my Gardener’s giant crimson I’m at least going to try to get two started I’ll probably only plant one myself if and if I’m fortunate enough to get two going then I will give one away to my father-in-law pink Ox heart tomato the Box Car

Willie the Cherokee purple champagne bubbles for our cherry tomato the giant Belgium I’m really excited about this one I’ve never tried this one before and an Amana Amana tomato doesn’t that look beautiful never on this one either but I love a lot of diversity in my

Tomatoes um I will tell you one that I tried that I am not a fan of and that is the like I saw the seed packet I was like yep no never again H it’s a dark one I’ll leave it in the description if I can’t think of it while

This video is still going yep my mind’s drawing a blank but I recommend trying lots of new tomatoes and mixing your Tomatoes when it comes to making your sauces and your Salsas and basically all tomato products because it gives it such a well balanced flavor a lot of depth of flavor versus

Just going with an Amish paste all around it’s good don’t get me wrong I mean those are great tomatoes for um making sauces but when you mix a lot of variety you get a flavor that can’t be achieved any other way so that’s why I

Choose to go a lot of variety from very acidic to Sweet to fruity to more meaty texture um and then we of course have our lettuces buttercrunch is my favorite lettuce um we’ll probably do some more kale because I doubt my kale is going to come back I’ve had kale growing in that

Garden now for at least four years consecutively that self seeds doubt it’s going to do that this year after tilling it but we’ll see oh no no no I just spilled a bunch of seeds so a couple fun things that I’m thinking about and I need to get out

There and like the next thing I’ll do other than writing my list of what I need to buy so you guys just know how my brain thinks is I’m going to go just look at my garden again and really come up with a couple ideas using the garden

Layout pages and the garden planner and I will use pencil because I will change my mind many times through this process um three things I’m thinking about artichokes hibiscus and wheat I want to try just a a plot a small little area of growing some hard white

Wheat I think that’s what it’s called the hard white weed and just so I know how much I get from that size of plot so I can use that for future planning if we want to take a spot out bigger in the rest of the property to

Potentially try our hand EG growing our own wheat berries how fun would that be I don’t know for sure that I want to do it or even if I do it will I enjoy doing that some something to learn something to grow from and experience um I know it’s a lot of work

To harvest your own wheat berries but I’ve watched the process and I’m like it seems doable so a lot to learn in that space but anyway I just wanted to share with you guys said I am starting my garden planning we have all of our seeds out

We’re working the plans I’m going to bring you guys through this whole process with me this year like I have in the past few gardening Seasons where we get our station set up in the house we get our supplies together I share with you how I

Do do it I’m no expert either guys I’m I’ve learned this just like you guys by watching YouTube videos by reading books um and sharing with you what I find has worked what hasn’t worked and I’d Ino invite you guys to join me um if you’re not subscribed Please Subscribe

Follow along we have a huge playlist on our channel of um some great gardening news where our garden has produced beyond what we’ve needed we’ve been able to share a lot of excess in a very small footprint our garden is about 45x 45 Square ft and um we do high-intensity gardening

Here for the most part um kind of using the square foot methodology where it works in our garden and what else can I share with you yep huge playlist we’ll link to that to give you some inspiration as you’re thinking about um what you want to grow

How you want want to grow it different garden designs um one Garden from year to year for me never looks the same they all look different um my struggles from one year to the next year aren’t always the same and uh I just look forward to

Getting my fingers back in the dirt and uh seeing what comes from our planning together this year so if you’re planning your garden tell me give me some ideas from your garden space What are you growing what new techniques are you trying and maybe we’ll continue to build

This community of learning together down in the comments below until the next video guys I’ll see you then and uh Happy planning your 2024 Garden where you are see you guys on the next one

  1. My husband updated our raised beds this year and they were awesome. I planted a fall garden and just today I picked a huge basket of greens – collards, mustard, and Swiss chard. We live in Missouri and do not have a green house so were so excited these were still growing. Still have lettuce and kale also. Can't wait to plan for Spring!

  2. Butternut squash is one of the most rewarding crops you’ll grow.
I like to do at least 2 plants. I grow them vertically.
I place nylon knee hi’s over the fruit when it starts to ripen so the critters don’t chomp on it.
They’re so expensive in the store nowadays.

I’m in the same boat as you w the dill.

I broke down and bought a start a few years ago and that basically didn’t get much bigger

Thanks for getting us inspired. 😊

  3. Butternut squash babies, about 4” long and tender skinned, cut up and fried are creamy delicious if you get a lot.

  4. Yes to butternut, excellent winter storage crop. Try Canadian crookneck squash also/instead It has a smaller seed cavity so you get more produce per squash and I found they are just as prolific.
I found that the dill I plant purposely never grows to that mammoth size as advertised but if I let a few go fully to seed and over winter, come spring these grow and are truly georgeous specimens. Must be that they will be the ones that can acclimate to my conditions. I haven’t had to plant dill in years and always have an abundance of mammoth plants that start earlier too.

  5. After giving my garden a rest over winter (it's just too windy where I live), and missing out on my garden last year. I'm hoping to reclaim my 2 'new' beds from Mother Nature and grow sweetcorn for the first time. I'm curious though, how well does the 3 sisters work for everyone else? Am I better off growing them separately?

  6. I hope you have success with artichokes. I planted, grew big, so we decided the first year we would let flower since the flowers are so pretty…this plant attracted so many pest, but mainly leaf footed bugs and apparently a type of aphid that yellow jackets love. I couldn't wait to dig that baby up and throw away. Maybe plant away to a section by itself.🙂🤞

  7. My dill that self seeds always gets the biggest. For me, it is one of the things that gets going even before everything else (even peas!). It gets going before I even prepare my beds for planting. Last year I carefully prepared the bed around it. I think it just had enough time to get big before it got too hot for it.

  8. Your comments about enjoying your gardening really echoed my own heart. I took a job with long hours in the afternoon and evenings a couple years ago and have struggled to get time to really enjoy my garden. Last year, deer got into my garden and ate pretty much everything but the onions, garlic, tomatoes, and cauliflower. They even ate the potatoes and thorny raspberry plants. I was so frustrated and tired.. My goal this year is to get back to enjoying my gardens.

  9. I'm looking forward to watching your garden journey this year, as I always do. Will definitely be curious how the wheat does if you decide to try it. I've started really thinking about what I'm going to plant this year, and really base it on what I use and need the most and only plant those things. I have a somewhat limited space. I love sweet potatoes, but I'm the only one that eats them, so in some ways it doesn't make sense for me to grow them. I have lots of green beans that I canned from previous years that need to be eaten up, so I may not grow any of them this year. I also have many carrots canned, so still deciding on them. I would like to have some for fresh eating. I know I need to grow more tomatoes than last year because I just didn't get enough to put away last year.

  10. We're starting to plan/dream too! It's exciting!
I don't live too far from you guys and red noodle beans are regularly in my garden. We LOVE them! On an arched trellis they remind me of a beaded curtain. Delicious as a fresh or canned bean and as a dry bean, they taste like black eyed peas! Amana Orange tomato is also delicious! Last year I grew loofah for the first time and although our season isn't technically long enough, we got appx 20 sponges and even more of the small ones that were edible (and delicious!)

  11. My goals this year are to also have a space of joy and relaxation. I grew flowers for the first time last year and it brought me so much serenity. I now have expanded plans to make sure I have plenty around. Also to have garden snacks for my boys. I love too see them forage around for stuff.

  12. HAPPY NEW YEAR DEAR FRIEND HOPE YE ALL HAD A WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS THE ONLY THING DONE IN THE GARDEN I HAVE MY GARLIC SAT
FIRST THING TO SET IS MY EARLY POTATOES THAT WILL BE 17TH MARCH
    NEXT ON THE LIST ONIONS
    HAPPY GARDENING 2024

  13. So I live in Houston,Tx and I’m telling some plants seems to be perennials(tomatoes,Bell peppers…and more 🌱🌱

  14. Hello Rachel, Just order your planner, I'm in PA. Have followed you since your beginning and still can't grow my garden 😂
I would love to know the trick to growing root vegetables, I have no luck!
Also hoping you share (early enough) your asparagus and artichoke journey, purchasing, ground prep etc.
I love everything about this video.
Thank you for continuing to educate us, I can't imagine how much work you put into this.
Ps…do you have a source for the wheat berries?

  15. Can u tell us where in mi. To get a heavy duty french frie maker ? All I see in the store in Bay county mi. Is the cheap ones that brake

  16. This year, we are building a new place from scratch. It's pretty daunting trying to build a good garden from nothing but rocks and red clay, but hopefully, we will get some kind of harvest to tide us over until we can afford soil and lumber to build raised beds. Being in the city is really messing with my garden plan because I need to get a survey to find the power lines and utilities. I think we're already down several berry bushes and a few fruit trees due to cable placements. Bummer.

  17. I've really enjoyed this video and listening to the planning of your garden. I agree, it is wonderful to sit down and take a breath after all the activity of the holidays have past and start planning. ❤

  18. I'm so glad I found you, just subscribe too. I look forward to watching your videos to come. I will go back and check them all out, in from Michigan, zone 6a. I'm also ready to grow our garden for this year, I raise meat rabbits for our meat, Alpine dairy goats for milk and what ever I can make with the milk. I also make all our beauty products from our goats milk. We have colored eggs layers. We were doing meat chicken too, but the rabbits are so much easier to raise. I need to order some more seeds. I also want to beautiful garden and flower beds. I have two big flower beds and one small one. But our farm is a working process. As we bought it in 2020. Which was fully wooded. Thank you for sharing. Till next time God Bless.

  19. Rachel I missed you in my garden so much last summer. Welcome back. I love to plant alongside you because our locations are so near that we have the same weather.

  20. The year I got the 6 foot tall dill “tree,” it was the plant I started during the winter inside to try and have dill inside until the garden was back. Get some dill into a pot inside now and do whatever you do to add fertility to the soil about once a month. The head start is worth it. Starting from seed in the garden never got me plants more than a foot high.

  21. Good morning ☕ I've grown the red long beans. They're more suitable for frying rather than boiling, tend to get rubbery in water. Hope this helps. Good luck with this year's garden 😀

  22. I'm planting a few 20ft rows of raspberries, blackberries and then some rows or blueberries. As well as expending my orchard. Hopefully all utilizing gray water. I live in a hot dry spot in California, all our water comes from a spring on the property, limiting my growing ability in summer, trying to use the water efficiently.

  23. I like watching your chanel.i live in mi. Too ,baycounty.i garden and cann every year .im all ways looking for new idears in growing food and new things to cann.i will be 72 years ago this month, and learned to cann soup and meat this year because of your chanel and other sits on u tube.do u no how to can hotdogs that dont turn out mussy? Is there a brand or techneack that works.i eat the little dogs in those small canns we can buy. Thank you

  24. A joyful garden sounds wonderful. I live in zone 9b southwest Florida, so I garden year-round, but wintertime is the best time to garden here. One of the things that bring joy to me in my garden is my herbs. So this winter, I am adding a small raised herb garden out my back door for easy access for cooking meals. Another thing that brings me joy in my garden is to have an esthetically pleasing, eye-catching garden. Happy gardening in 2024.

  25. I have to tell you 2022 was a year I barely got around with cancer surgery and months of chemotherapy, but I managed to garden (only raised beds) if I hadn’t seen your video on freezing tomatoes I don’t know what I would have done! It meant when I was stronger I could have fresh tomato sauce and enjoy it. Last year my husband battled heart issues so again I froze tomatoes and now I’m making sauce thank you so much for sharing.

  26. I like watching u on utub ,I learned a lot from your chanel and others chanel's.especley canning .I'm 72years old this month and now cann soup and meat ,ground meats stew meat and chicken .I even tryed brots and hot rods ,but they all turned out mussy, do u know a way to make them less mussy?
