Winter is the best time to propagate plants! #plants #garden #gardeningtips #vegetablegarden

Winter is prime plant propagation time! If your concerned that the winter cold will kill some of your favorite plants, take cuttings and propagate them indoors or in a greenhouse. Also keep in mind spring is right around the corner. Its easier to take cuttings for plants and root them, then to start all the way from seed again.

Plant Propagation Tips:
1. Make clean cuts right underneath a leaf node. This is where the new roots will grow.
2. Some plants root easy in water, others do not. Experiment to find out what works best for you.
3. If rooting in soil – please please please try to use a “soilless” medium. Regular soils or compost are full of various pathogens that will infect/rot out your cuttings.
4. Use a rooting hormone powder to speed up and be more successful rooting cuttings.

If you have any favorite products or techniques when it comes to rooting cuttings, please share in the comments.

  1. Or if you are limited in garden space all those rooted cuttings could be shared with family, friends, or neighbors if your original plants come through the cold just fine.
