  1. In 2024, okay so I'm going to try sweet potatoes for the first time. I've grown a ton of regular potatoes, so I want to try a few sweet potatoes. Also back in October I want to say, I also planted garlic for the first time so that's overwintering right now to be harvested around the 4th of July or so. Aside from that nothing really extraordinary, I'm going to try a different variety of potatoes for one section, along with my regular varieties of potatoes.

My garden size is pretty well established at this point, I don't want to place any more land under cultivation as I have enough as is ๐Ÿ™‚.

Can't think of anything new or exciting I'm changing for next year, that's really about it. After about 8 years or so of growing food I've gotten it to where I want it to be at this point, and I've gotten good enough at this point that I don't just kill plants anymore ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜Š. I'm not even remotely seeking self-sufficiency with my garden, it's way too small for that, but it is big enough to provide supplemental food for the family. If nothing else we don't have to buy potatoes or summer squash until the spring ๐Ÿ™‚. Happy New Year ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ.

  2. you are joking! have you closed the online shop??? I wanted to buy some of your large deep potting trays? I couldn't get any last year, where can I buy the trays now????

  3. Thank you so much for all you've shared over the last year. Wishing you, your dear ones, and all those in the community the very best of the new year. I'm in the US Z5b/6a and my goals are to grow as intensively as possible with interplanting and being smarter about seed starting so I always have something at the ready to go in when space opens up (shoutout to Charles Dowding for that) and to build protective structures for my hoop house and raised beds to extend the season and do some serious winter gardening.
If you're here you'll understand-our local variety store has their seed racks up and filled! Made my heart go pitter-pat.

  4. Happy New Year Huw! Iโ€™m getting ready to winter sow my cold hardy flowers and vegetables here in chilly Michigan, USA. My humidifier requires distilled water, which is sold here in clear plastic gallon (3.79 liters) jugs. We donโ€™t have recycling nearby, so I reuse as much as I can. I cut the empty water jugs open, put potting soil and water into them, plant seeds, and then tape the jugs back together. Then I place them outdoors, on the south side of my house. The plastic jugs work like miniature cold frames, giving me a jump start on my spring garden. I transplant them into my garden once the frost is out of the ground, and the mud dries up, which usually is after the middle of April. Then I can reuse the jugs to plant more frost-tender varieties. Iโ€™ve had great success with this method, and there is far less transplant shock because the plants are already adapted to full sun.

  5. Happy New Year Huw! Thanks for the channel recommendations, I too enjoy both of their content. Good choices. Best to you!

  7. I love your channel, Huw. Happy New Year to you, look forward to what 2024 brings ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿพ๐Ÿฅ‚๐ŸŽ‰

  8. Happy New Year Huw! In 2023 I went from a casual gardener into an obsessed flower grower. For 2024, I'm hoping we can buy a house with a large yard and I can plant all of the roses and peonies which are currently in pots into the ground but more importantly, get started on turning my backyard into a food forest. I'm so looking forward to watching this years videos on permaculture.

Now I'm off to shop for seeds for plants I have zero space for. ๐Ÿ˜‚

  9. I have a huge project. For the past three years I have been preparing a sandy soil (beach sand ) Cherry Grove, Fire Island, NY, USA. With little success. But now I am going full speed after reading notes from a settler on the same island who had a wonderful garden a hundred years ago. Mixing pork manure, seaweeds and any kind of native plants to the compost pile.

  10. Happy New Year to you and your beloved ones. May the year ahead brings lots of gardening-pleasure. Like your videoโ€™s a lot. Thanks for that

  11. Thank you for all your great videos teaching us new ideas. Looking forward to 2024 and following you in the garden. From Clarence NY , happiest of New Years wishes to you!

  12. Thank you for sharing Huw. Your knowledge has been very helpful for me. Best wishes in the New Year. Jason from Melbourne Australia. This comment will be deleted within 46 hours.

  13. Great channel suggestions. Both have great practical tips and a ton of deeper knowledge. I'd also throw out @gardenlikeaviking as well. Nate does a good job giving clear and concise methods and has built a nice community of good people.

  14. Sorry to hear about the website. Be proud to have been brave enough to start a business like that. No shame in learning from experience and needing to pivot. Happy new year. ๐Ÿฅณ

  15. Hello Huw, your videos always inspire me and make me happy to get out there and do something better. My plans for the garden in 2024? Accessibility. At 70 I am actively looking for ways to get it all done in spite of my limitations. I refuse to give up! The past two seasons were rough and I almost did… but my garden is my lifeline to get up and do, and the food I produce keeps me nutritionally sound and helps feed us through the winter. So, thank you, and bless you through the new year. ~Lynda~

  16. My year ahead in gardening… the old garden beds are falling apart and taken over by convolvulus coming through the fence so I'll be ripping them out and completely redesigning them properly! That'll be my winter job, it's summer here in NZ ๐Ÿ™‚ Happy new year Huw team!

  17. HAPPY NEW YEAR, HUW AND SAM!!!! Now that your online shop has closed, is there anywhere we can buy your seed trays here in the United States?

  18. Happy New Year Huw! I'm embarking on an OPD project and connecting with like minded people who might be interested in taking up plots in the neighbourhood to build a community-like living situation or village ๐ŸŽ‰

  19. You are such an inspiration to us, and….I would love you to experiment with a one year-round bed of vegetables and flowers that have no help from tunnels, green houses, cold frames, etc. I live in the North of France where we get such gales that any structure is very quickly destroyed. I don't want to dispose of any more bent and shredded plastic. Also, winter tends to go on forever here, and temperatures often stay below 12c during the day and colder than 6c at night well into June. Wishing you a very happy new year and many thanks for sharing your knowledge with us ๐Ÿ˜Š

  20. Happy New Year!

I've just bought the hot bed and the fermentation courses as well as Sam's book. I've tried and failed at hot beds and have limited ferment success, so heres hoping 2024 is filled with triumphs both areas ๐Ÿคž

  21. So pleased to see you recommending "David the good" 's you tube channel. I've been following him for ages . Really knowledgeable and funny. I have his unique swamp water recipe to thank for my 30kg plus winter squashes on my allotment. Thanks for your great content and happy new year!

  22. Thanks for the update. I'm looking forward to following the progress of the self sufficiency garden, and everything else you are involved with in the gardening world. As a gardener I really appreciate your channel!!!!!

  23. I can only grow in containers. Iโ€™d love to see more content on growing amazing produce in raised beds and containers. Iโ€™ve always had a normal garden or an allotment. I also have a squirrel issue, little horrors, so it looks as if everything will need to be covered. Itโ€™s going to be amazing but Iโ€™m starting totally from scratch and Iโ€™m no spring chicken. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

  24. Too right Huw. Gardening is really underrated. I got into it without any thought process….my dad died, I cried, and a day later I was on my hands and knees gardening…..and I haven't stopped since!

  25. Love Jesse Frost from No Till Growers! Heโ€™s so entertaining that even my non-gardening husband likes watching him. ๐Ÿ˜€
