And sure enough the majority of you voted hi I’m Chango two about two weeks ago uh we u i duck this tree and show you and ask you to vote the design that you like uh when I took it all the the ground I pretty much say this is the

Orientation I want which is the informal upright and sure enough uh the majority of you voted number three option which is this one so in respect of your uh suggestion I would do this uh tree this style and I think that’s a good choice it’s very logical Choice a number of you

Voted for number one which is the Bonin style and I tell you what I would have done if you voted for the buin style basically I was going to make this tree into a tree that’s kind of latti uh kind of in a small pot and what

I would do is I probably start off by using my reciprocal saw cutter here and then I use a h a chisel uh an axe or a wedge and a sledgehammer to to uh uh crack this Branch off this whole side off you know you can just hit it and it will

Eventually uh break off and I think that brake will make it look really natural and and that would become a very nice tree and then this one I have to work on it I may very well put it back in the ground to have some more shoots coming

Out before I work on again so what I’ll do today uh is to do the number three preference that you have recommended and um and do a uh literat style next week uh it’s another maple tree I bought at an auction uh that can be made into a

Nice uh buin style tree so you get to see both how to make a formal upright or informal upright as well as a bentry Japanese maple I think you will enjoy this the tools today I will use is really this big uh slopper uh to cut off the roots to fit

Into the uh the growing part uh that’s one thing I use and then of course my trusty little Clipper uh this one for cutting thicker branches and then this is for scraping now uh what I have done is I bought this set of tools uh that comes with this nice

Wrapper and you can see it say everything I need uh in one package very convenient so um that’s what I use part of it today if I need it but generally uh the very simple tools uh is all I need uh nothing much really uh bonai people tend to make

It too uh complicated and charge a lot of money for anything they add a we bonai to it so just whatever tools that works for you is it’s good enough so with that in mind then let me get to work I begin with by um removing a

Little bit of the soil up on top because I want to make the maximum use of the uh Roots uh in the design of the tree and uh getting rid of the uh soil on top also get rid of the uh a lot of the U weeds

That I don’t need uh for my bonai uh and I I I will probably use uh good potting soil uh for my um for my find bonai potting uh when I get to bongai potting in the bongai pot I may go and find a bonai pot to use uh to

When I finish finish it although I won’t go the detail of putting in a uh Bai pot you can see there are a lot of possibility uh with the roots uh in terms of beautiful root rootage but I will go into details um when I go to the

Next level of detail uh in reporting so let me cut off the root to uh to appropriate sizes so for example uh this route is very long but this is the fibrous Roots so if I cut it off here uh that’s about the right length in a sense apart from the

The the trunk and then um this will shoot out to become the dominant one so basically I want to cut it a round circle uh to fit in the pot uh there someday with the with the uh the uh uh size of the bones ey part in mine but

You see I tried to cut off the big fake Roots but save as much as the fibrous Roots as I can again it’s a think of as a Circumference and the thing is that I cut have now instead of later after the tree getting close to finish the design is that because then the fibrous Roots would grow out of here uh to fill the bonai PO which and I really like to have a lot of

Fibrous Roots if I can help help it uh inside the Bon part because that will feed the tree very nicely but you can see I’m starting to make a little circle around this because it will not otherwise it’s too big it will not fit into the bonai

Pot this is a u a FIS car uh I bought from Costco inexpensively but it’s really sharp and really nice to Use I cut this off the big Roots because then vious Roots May emerge to help the tree survive or Thrive inside the bonai part you can see this cutter cutter Cuts quite thick a branch this is almost oh more than between 3/4 and 1 inch uh diameter which

Is uh really quite amazing for a little cutter and this one you can see it’s cross over but that’s not very desirable so I just cut it off here so hopefully this part will shoot out and uh make it look Nice for the little crack is okay because that’s fibrous Roots May emerge from that actually uh this rot is already fusing to this route you can see it’s all together in one piece now so well since there’s a plenty other fibrous Roots I just cut off right here

Because then they may come out here to look nice in the future so you always think longterm uh let me take a saw I guess I I lied I should have included saw in the tools I in the tools I need comes this big root and all of

These hopefully we shoot out the uh vious roots to keep the tree alive so I’m not going to cut any more of the roots because uh to save it uh for the grow in a sense speed up the growth uh everything is a compromise so now let’s look at the

Roots a little bit more carefully I made a mistake to cut this partially off but you can see this has rooted out so what I would do is that I will take a chisel and cut it off here just like the tree is uh dead here I

Guess they call it Sheree but then in fact the bottom was feeding it and and hopefully this part where I cut off uh some fibrous Roots will come out here too so all of that will be very nice for the bonai pot and here we are the tree

Is almost done you can see the tree is now nice round that will fit into aong I part of Moder size and now I’m ready to work the top the top is going to be relatively simple because there’s not that many branches left basically the pot the soil level would be about here

Right and and maybe a little bit lower on on this side because I want to accentuate the curve and so uh this is the Apex and and this could be a branch going out that way and I leave it alone and then this would maybe come out this way and

Uh for sure you want this Branch to come this way someday maybe go this way so and this is a little bit too high relative to this so I will cut this off I’ll cover leave a little bit of a stu uh to protect the brain so it doesn’t

Get accidentally knocked off and um and that’s way too high so I’ll probably cut it off here and then uh see what happens here to worry about it the next time so so it’s potentially there will be a pad here I don’t think I want this to go inward that much

So I think this would shoot out somehow this way but this one I think I would count on this so maybe I’ll just leave it alone for now but what’s important is this Apex and this tree is here will go out that way uh I probably don’t want just

Here and hopefully this will go out that way and this Branch I think it’s beautiful the way it kind of curv around and so um I really like to probably use this Branch to take over you can see um there’s not much of a oh there’s a little um there’s a tiny

There’s a tiny little butt here so hopefully this will come out so let me cut this off and then um this will probably come out this way which is still below this which is fine and maybe I cut this one off to encourage this butt to grow

And again I leave a little stuff to Pro oh to protect this one and then I cut this off so that’s it that’s a tree and I to accommodate a little bit of the till to make sure the soil level is okay so I I’ll plant it in

The pot this way right now for growing so that this Roots would become lower so that someday I can tilt it up this way so right now I’ll put it back in the in a part this orientation so that’s the tree uh that you ordered for number three uh you can

Imagine uh what happens is that this would be the top like this coming out and then this will be coming out this way and this one will be going out this way of course all this is very conceptual uh it will materialize in 2 or 3 years but uh I

Will show this tree uh in the June uh March April time frame uh to show the tremendous growth and maybe in July time frame to cut it back and then uh we’ll keep working on it for the next 3 years it will become a manificent bonye about this size it’ll

Be absolutely beautiful so that’s the beauty about Japanese Bonza you let it reach out uh to give it a spread and that that’s what makes it makes them look magnificent so thank you very much uh for your voting and for your interest and I hope you like my video and I need

The browny points and encouragement and subscribe to our site so you can get announcements like the raffle and so forth so thank you very much see you next week and before that and don’t forget I’ll do the next week the uh leati uh Maple bonai which I

Think you’ll also like thank you very Much

I tjink this Tree will be Epic in just a few years!

    Great Work here today Milton👑🌲

  2. Thank you .. I have a Japanese Maple in the ground that I’m planning on digging up in the spring to put it in a grow box. Ive been growing it from a seedling for the last 5 years!

  3. Outside 🍃new cutting tree spicy thai (มะกรูด)different bug eat 🍃very much agree child different guppies spice tree loudly began judgment began longer Pittsburgh has what it all began netflix 😂🥰👍

  4. I got the same loppers from costco. What a deal! Lightweight and easy to use. I feel like the membership pays for itself through your savings. How do you keep the bonsai alive after you cut that many roots off? Will you replant it into the ground?

  5. Glad you chose this style although the other style where you break off the whole side of the maple, that would be very radical and make a very unique tree. Thanks for the video.

  6. I think that the overwhelming majority of your viewers don't have access to this size bush / tree… perhaps some focus on much smaller trees might be more appropriate…🤔🤔

  7. Hi Milton! For your next Q/A, I was wondering: Where in the Bay Area do you go for bonsai auctions? How often are bonsai auctions hosted? It's quite rare for me to find information about bonsai auctions.

  8. Looks very promising. Perhaps reducing that thick left branch down to the secondary branches would look better. It’s too overpowering at the height it reaches compared to the apex. You won’t be losing any important ramification.

  9. You've inspired me to make my own videos I love bonsai and I love watching experts doing what the do best❤

  10. I have two questions I hope you might address in your Wednesday Q& A. All of my bonsai trees and plants, which also include some succulents, are grown in a temperature controlled greenhouse and seem to thrive. Since they stay indoors they don’t have seasons or periods of dormancy. My questions are:

    1) since they don’t have seasons or times of dormancy is it OK to prune, cut and repot them any time of the year?

    (2) should they be moved outside when weather permits or will that be too much of a temperature and light shock when I have to bring them back inside?

I’ve not been doing Bonsai very long, so none of my plants are very old. I’m wondering what the long term affects of pruning, cutting and repotting will be on plants that are kept in a year round greenhouse.

    Thanks you so much.
