Oh hey I didn’t know you were here today I’m going to be sharing some essential tips with you on how to care for your flower bed before the winter sets in but before we do that I would like to go to the front of our driveway there is

A beautiful grass it’s a tiger grass and it has a beautiful plumes on it right now it has dried out and I would like to take some of those plumes and put them in a vase in the house so that they can provide some decoration in the winter I

Think they will look very beautiful so let’s go ahead and head over There look at these plumes aren’t they gorgeous I love them so we’re going to be taking some of them I’m not sure how tall I want the stems to be but I’m going to try to make them tall and then when I bring them inside I can resize them to

Whatever size I want them to be but this grass is gorgeous eventually it’s going to get out of here but I’m going to feel so sad about it because I’m going to be changing the plans for this whole area over here but for now it looks gorgeous

And I’m going to enjoy it and this grass has to be cut down before the winter comes because this grass what happens sorry we got a we get lots of airplanes it’s like an and helicopters it’s like a an airplane a minute it feels like it so

I’m just going to keep rolling because it’s it’s getting dark so when the snow comes this whole grass flops over and gets on our driveway and our neighbor’s driveway so I really need to cut it back before the winter sets or before snow starts falling and accumulating but for

Now I’m just going to take a few stems off of it to create an Endor bouquet and uh we’re just going to enjoy it and then after that on another day I’ll come out here and clear it also this grass is really sharp so I have to be careful

When I touch it I have my gloves on I always garden with gloves I just don’t like to get dirt under my fingernails that helps also for a lot of things that are rough and uh things that are are just kind of going to scratch against

Your hands and I like my hands to stay nice and clean and free of Cuts I think I need more because I may be stripping some of these leaves off the thing is these stems are pretty thick you know what I think I’ll come back tomorrow I’m going to fix them tonight in the pot in the vase I keep

Saying pot in the vase and see how they look like and then if I need more I’ll come out tomorrow but look at these plumes they are gorgeous the one downside about them is I noticed that when I get close to them I get like an allergic reaction we we’re going to have

To not shake them too much also when you bring them indoors they start dropping some of the pollen and the seeds so they can create a bit of a mess but eventually they stop and they’ll look pretty and you can leave them like that

For a long time so now let’s go over to the flower bed and hopefully we can do something before it gets dark so let’s see if we can whiz through these tips before it gets dark the first tip I have for you is that you want to clear all

Debris and plant matter from your flower beds because in that plant matter and debris you’re going to have possible pests and diseases so by clearing them out you are removing the home for the non-beneficial insects now unfortunately some of the beneficial insects also can stay in those debris but they have other

Places for them to stay for us we have a lot of woods over here and and there are plenty of debris all around us that the beneficial insects can stay in but what I don’t want to have is the non-beneficial insects staying in here and creating a problem in the future

Also some of these plants still have green foliage on them like the Shasta daisies it’s a kind of a semi Evergreen over here once it gets really cold and it starts getting into the teens then the foliage on the chassid daies dies back but as long as it’s in the upper

Teens this foliage is still here so by clearing the debr off of these plants these plants are still going to be able to get some energy from the sunlight and give it to their Roots because right now that is what is growing the roots and not so much the tops the tops have

Stopped growing and the roots are what’s growing and in case if there are evergreens like over here I have this boxwood that are going to be hindered by all these debris then by removing these debris we are making sure that none of these plants that need the sunlight are

Going to be blocked and hindered by any of the debris so that’s what we’re going to do first I’m going to just take all of this stuff out of the bed and just make sure it’s clean this is really quick and it’s not going to take much

Time but I’m not going to focus too much on it because we also want to move to our second tip tip which leads us to our second tip which is cutting back perennials now cutting back perennials is not a necessary thing but it just makes it

More uh appealing to look at when your flower bed is all clean so that’s one thing you want to consider also some perennials put out a lot of seeds and if you want to stop those seeds from spreading in your flower beds and you want to cut those back and another thing

Is that some perennials might have have some insects that are harboring in the stems and you would not know unless you pruned your perennials back so when you want to prune your perennials back you want to cut them about 2 to 3 in above soil level and then the next season when

Spring comes they will flush back up and they will be ready to bloom and Thrive for you now some perennials you don’t want to cut back until spring or a little bit B later in the spring one of those perennials for example is hardy hibiscus

And I do not cut my hardy hibiscus back until I see some growth on it and that’s because its stems when you cut them they are Hollow so the water would go in them and it would rot your hearty hibiscus so those are some plants that you do not

Want to cut back in the late fall or early winter uh but when it comes to most perennials you can cut them back during the late fall early winter or early fall uh whenever they are ready to be cut back this way you cut back also

On your spring chores and you won’t have as much to do when spring comes otherwise you would be overwhelmed with all the chores that you have for spring I know for me my Springs are always super busy and I always think oh I can do this and this and the spring and then

I ended up I I end up doing half of it because it just takes so much more than I anticipated so that’s one tip for your perennials and your flower beds now let’s move on to the third tip and the third tip that I have for you is weeding

Your flower beds before the snow falls now if your flower beds are frozen you can wait for a day when the temperatures warm up and you can weed during that time now today happens to be one of those days and if I came out here earlier I would have been able to take

Advantage of that but thankfully tomorrow is going to be another day that is going to be warm also and it’s actually going to be warmer than today it’s going to be in the ‘ 50s that’s going to be perfect because that temperature is going to thaw any Frozen

Soil that we have over here and I’m going to be easily able to weed the garden because what happens is during the fall there are weeds that grow that are perennials and Hearty uh weeds that can come back the next spring so right now they sprout and the next spring they

Will put on all their growth and spread all their seeds all over your garden so the best thing that you can do is if you are able to to get at these weeds before before they can become a pro problem for you the next season so tomorrow I’m

Going to be coming here and weeding this flower bed because right now the soil is frozen but tomorrow when the sun is out and the temperature is warm I’m going to be able to weed this flower bed if you live in a warmer climate than I am then

You are going to be able to do this a lot easier than I’m going to be able to do this and the last tip that I have for you is mulching if you have the ability to mulch your flower beds in the fall that would be the perfect time for

Mulching because in the spring season as I have said it’s you’re going to be super busy especially if you haven’t cut back your perennials and cleaned your beds and you have to do all that and then Mulch and the weeds would be sprouting and you’re Franck and or is

That even a word you’re getting frantic and you are trying to do all these things and also mulch so if you can do all these chores in the fall that would actually be a lot better because you’re going to be preparing your flower beds for for the spring and then all you have

To do in the spring is just get your plants and plant them in the ground and you’re going to thank yourself for doing that so it’s getting dark and it’s getting really blurry but there’s one more thing I want to say about mulching and that is its benefits for your soil

So when you apply the mulch right now you’re actually protecting your soil because that’s going to protect the temperature of the soil it’s going to regulate it it’s going to regulate the humidity of the soil and it’s going to protect your plants by mulching the root roots and if you have really low

Temperatures that you did not expect by mulching your flower beds right now you are going to be providing your plants with extra protection and those plants that might not have survived these super low temperatures they might be able to survive if you mulch your flower beds

Now also you are going to be protecting a lot of the Bene beneficial bacteria and and insects that are in the soil so mulching is a really good thing to do right now
