Front Yard Garden

Late Fall Garden Maintenance

Today I’ll be doing some front to back late fall garden maintenance. The question I’m often ask: Is it safe to prune in late fall? Today I will be sharing, from my 30+ years of gardening and landscaping, what is safe to prune and what isn’t plus tips. So along with a rake and a pair of gloves to get to the fallen leaves, grab your snippers and spade and let’s get to work cleaning up the garden, pruning back the dormant plants and getting your garden into shape for a wonderful re-blooming season in 2024.

Hey everyone and welcome back oh my gosh I hope you all had a beautiful Thanksgiving mine was really great it was great to get away uh the weather was not what I was expecting uh let me get through the door here I was really expecting it to be

Like in the’ 70s and granted we did have one day of the 70s so I packed completely not prep prepared for the weather anyway that’s for a whole different video what I’m going to do today is I’m going to be doing yard maintenance from the street front of my

Yard all the way to the very back of my backyard and I’m hoping to do this as quickly as possible but I’m going to show you what it looks like right now especially because I’ve been gone to l have been falling and so the yard doesn’t look its

Best but you’ll get an idea what it looks like before and then uh you’ll see after so with that you guys let’s get Started this whole area here is what I call my rock garden I don’t show this very often um because I forget all the time but I’m just going to do a really quick uh sweep on this but I will go over all the plants in this area and

What they are and what I’m going to do but uh as you can see it’s got a ton of debris all the way to the very end in into my driveway that all has to be cleaned up so right here I have some lies that uh they’re still green I’m

Amazed uh we’re at the end of uh November and it’s still green uh then I have some hop like oregano that needs to be Tri crammed uh then I have a champion Rose over here this just needs to be tidied up a little bit it’s actually even blooming can you

Believe this at the end of November and it is blooming oh my gosh and then I have some ladoria I’m saying Lilia right here uh then I have another uh Rose Wild Rose I will put the proper names on the screen here for you this one I’m going to clip

Back this this is a very hearty hearty rose bush it’s very thorny but uh it shouldn’t be in this side and then I have some lamium here just needs a little Tiding more lies that migrated here some lithodora here I have uh some lodor over here

And uh I believe I have a rock Rose somewhere here but I don’t see it right now it might have gone a gond dorment lithodora lithodora and look my lithodora is actually blooming isn’t this crazy end of November and things are blooming still so yeah uh then I’ve got more lethor this

Was uh this area right here let me back up a little bit this area right here was that Fountain uh that I was trying to grow a few years ago maybe I think it was a couple seasons ago I was trying to create a fountain well ladoria takes

Forever to grow but it’s starting to get that Fountain effect that I was looking for and so that’s really nice and once it blooms in blue it just in the springtime is just gorgeous uh let’s see let me quickly there’s some lies here that migrated

Over and then I got more lador here also In Bloom oh my God go and then I need to clean out all this so that’s what’s in for this area let’s go up here so now what I’m going to do is I’m going to go through the driveway

Over this direction so you can kind of see uh my Pian tree uh needs to be uh just covered for the winter uh and moved from this area for a more sheltered area uh I still have my hot lip Sylvia that’s still blooming doing fantastic I’m finally losing the leaves off of my

Japanese maple so I’ll probably give that a shake um just kind of clean up a lot of this stuff look at my Liles they’re still fairly green so I will be cleaning this Garden area up a little bit so just you can see it so this I will prune back quite a bit

Almost down to the bottom it grows from the ground up this is that Rose Wild Rose and it is just absolutely gorgeous I don’t think I can never kill it but uh yeah that needs to be cleaned up um I’m going to leave my uh hydranges alone but just

Clean up all the debris around here uh on this side I’m just going to clean up the leaves the last of my doole cut that off and as well as this one down to the ground I wish I would have captured this when it was actually just starting to

Really get its fall colors cuz it was gorgeous uh this Japanese maple but I didn’t but as you can see a lot of my Bishop Delia is starting to die down that naturally dies down but I will clip it all the way down to the ground today

Um and then I will be deadheading all of my hostas uh this is my red Valyrian I will be cutting that way down look at how big my Lambs here grew and it’s got some flowers it’s still blooming an’t that just gorgeous so I’m thinking I may pull

That out and then uh over winter it I’ll explain that in a later video but uh yeah just a little bit of Maintenance out here uh make sure that everything is tagged and clip all my hostas down they’re completely gone now and yeah uh this is still blooming this

Is my flowering maple look at it it’s still blooming it’s we’re in the end of November this should be going dormant now let let me just uh uh let you guys know and I probably have uh said this many times before but uh this flowering Maple a beyon this one hair will stay

Evergreen if you overwinter it if it’s out in the elements it will completely go dormant as you can see my hostes are gone and just Tiding up all this stuff here uh yeah so that’s for this part Let’s uh go over here let’s see then just tidying up over

Here all my hostes have already gone dormant as you can see and uh except for maybe my June h and the uh what is that Ivory um I’ll put it down on the on the screen cuz I can’t think of it but yeah things are going dormant I will be

Cutting this back severely uh it really needs it um this is the wrong time to do it but I will explain that at a later time as to why um a lot of things are going on in my home so stay tuned for a video to come on that uh but yeah this

Needs to be really cut back and then just really tidy and cut back some of the things that need to and just really clean this whole thing up I haven’t put my canvas WS up yet I might trying to determine whether to do that right now

Or wait until mid December to do it uh and then over here I just basically need to tidy up but that’s about it hope you guys enjoyed this but uh most of all you guys thank you so much for joining me today and if you’re new my name’s wonita

I’m with Jay C thank you and welcome okay you guys I’m going to get Busy so one thing that I I want to mention and this is just my opinion but uh if you’re going to clip your lies late in the fall because they’re still green leave some Greenery this way it gets the photosynthesis that it needs for next year’s flowers so I’m clipping

Them back but I’m not clipping them all the way to the very bottom cuz I would be sacrificing next year’s flowers if I did that now I do have a rosemary bush here that I had and it was beautiful and I don’t know what happened

To it but uh it died I don’t know if it just outlived uh you know it’s just time cuz some plants you know they they just have a life span just like we do and uh maybe that was the problem so yeah as we can see the roots they’re

Pretty much dead so it was just this time so now I can just plant something there next here let this lies continue to live on in this side so one of the reasons why I’m also cleaning this area up is because the mimosa tree is right above me

Throw a ton of debris and there seedlings in the fall so if you can see there’s a lot of black seeds in there I don’t know how well you can see that but there’s some black seeds this will grow little mimosa trees if I don’t pull

These out so uh yeah I mean they’re easy to pull out in the springtime but at the same time it’s best to just get rid of the seed pods as much as possible less work to do in the spring I’m sure there’s a lot of seeds already in Here so what I’m doing with these is that I’m just cutting it to the next heal see so if I’m looking at this see how this is right here I’m just clipping it down to the next helpie and if there’s anything dead I’m clipping it all the way

Down now is this the right time to do this uh probably not but these are also extremely hearty so whatever I uh kill will be many many more next year because I’m sure the seeds have uh dropped and so yeah I mean I don’t even know where these came from because I

Didn’t plant them Here So in this area all I’m going to do is pick up the leaves I may just tidy up this fire over here my snow sickle here and my Ruby Slipper I’m leaving alone right now they got this beautiful purplish colored leaves that’s absolutely gorgeous I think the flowers bring a lot

Of winter interest and so I don’t want to touch those uh you don’t want to trim these until either uh early spring but all you want to do is take off the dead flower that’s it because everything else is going to be for this year’s BL so

Yeah so that’s all I’m going to do here uh kind of pick up the leaves shake up some of the debris on here and that’s It so you really don’t want to cut your uh echin uh I did take off some of the balloons but you basically want to top it the reason for that is because the stem it’s a little Hollow I’ll show you here I’m going to put this in an

Angle at a certain point it is hollow so you always want to cut it in an angle and where there’s some meat into it if you’re going to trim it at all typically I would do this in the screen not in the FL so when I cut my delas in the winter because I do leave them in the ground you’ll see this is the top part it’s Hollow I always cut kind of like at the Joint at the note and I cut in an angle where it’s meteor because this way as

Long as we’re having sunny and decent weather even though it’s cold out it’s like in the the 50s it’ll still have time for it to scab over and then it will protect your delas that way so that’s just something if you do keep them in the ground you may want to keep

In mind but I would still mulch over it so most trees go dormant in the winter and uh Japanese maples also uh go dormant so when you’re removing leaves if you do do that and you see any dead limbs this would be a good time to cut

Those off that’s why you see me doing that so if there’s a foliage in the bottom but yet it looks dry and brittle up here I just keep it but just if it uh snaps or something then you know to cut it be a good way to eliminate some of

The work over for the spring time this part you really don’t need to do I’m just doing it because uh I want it to look nicer over the winter month it’s the next day I had to quit yesterday for a couple of reasons one the window washers came to wash our

Windows our exterior windows and so I had to kind of work around them but the other reason is also because I ran out of battery so needless to say I wasn’t able to film and capture some of the stuff but the most important part any

Way is just being able to see the before and after but I want to show you what I did uh that didn’t get caught on film so I’m going to walk over to uh my backyard and then you can see a little bit about what I’m doing and then I will continue

With this side uh and also so do part of the front so let me let me turn the camera around and then show you what I did basically what I had to do is I had to uh move over to this area because I knew the temperatures were going to drop

I wasn’t expecting it to be 40 today I was hoping it was sunny but I wanted to hurry up and trim some things before we got our first hard Frost and so I trimmed my hot lip siia over here here as you can see my lies are they never

Even got to bloom because basically they covered them up and so that one grew extremely vigorous this year but I left some flowers just so that the hummingbirds can continue to feed off of them or whatever Birds I’ve been getting quite a few Birds lately and uh then I

Just kind of started cleaning up I cleaned up my Yaro and took out the Dead uh blackeyed Susan and some of my conb flowers that were here I just kind of uh cleaned them up over here I didn’t do a perfect job but you know I was trying to

Work around these guys right here I have some blue shrimp that haven’t even died down I’m really surprised because they are a spring flower so and then I transplanted them over here so I’m kind of surprised that they’re still lingering on but that’s a good sign

Um in fact is this did this one kind of Bloom I’m getting oh quite a few blooms oh it looks like it wanted to bloom but uh yeah this has been really crazy weather in fact uh this just goes to show about global warning um because I’ve never had things

Flower this late in the season but right here is uh chosis uh pot of go right in this area I just want to ahead and chopped it down and then I just kind of cleaned around here and uh look like this uh Russian sage is doing really well it’s

Got a lot of buds on the stems as you can see look at all those buds it’s really confused and it goes all the way down to the ground so that’s promising for next spring and then I just kind of started cleaning up as you can see this is where I left off

Okay so let’s go back to the side yard where I was working so I think I was about right here uh talking to you guys or taking the leaves off of here when the window washers came so I was able to work a little bit around them where I took out

All of my delas over here and uh just lightly cleaned up around there not much much and then now I’m going to start doing the hostas taking those down the red Valyrian over here I’m thinking of leaving it for a little bit longer it’s actually even blooming look at the it’s blooming still

It still has quite a few buds you see that so I’m thinking I may go ahead and leave that for right now and then just start continuing to work this way so basically when you our trimming hes you want to wait until this is completely yellow now you can clip some of them

Periodically like if you start seeing them turn yellow you can just pull out one of the stems out they’re very easy you’re not going to pull the plant out anyway you can just yank it off uh also it makes them stronger now you can leave

The foliage and just let it sit over the winter months but personally I don’t like to do that because I get a lot of slugs and snails and if I do that there could be some uh diseases that are on the ground on the mulch it could be um eggs that have

Hatched and you know ready to come back out and I want to eliminate the problem and not uh add to the problem so that’s why I cut them down but if you don’t deal with a lot of slugs and stuff then you you can always leave them but yeah

And this one as you can see it very muched on from all of the snails and slugs so yeah and that’s a good reason to you know get rid of it and all I do is just grab it and chop it now one thing that I do do a lot of

People leave a little bit on the ground up I always take it straight down because that’s all going to die down anyway has nothing to do with the new growth so I cut it way way down and it doesn’t hurt it so it’s a preference you can do um as

You choose but that’s how I do it and my host do have no problems coming up uh the following year so yeah and then what I do is that I have it marked this here is a blue Hosta and then I mark it that way I know that this

Area here is my hostess it’s really great way to get to know because once uh it gets really cold even these little little stems that are sticking up you’re not going to see them so uh yeah it’s always good to Mar at least in my opinion now the other reason why I think

It’s a good idea to pick up uh leaves and mulch around especially around your hostes and cut those dead foliage off it’s because mosquitoes like to Harbor underneath uh moist uh leaves and if you’re in a rainy season like I am uh that is very likely to happen and I

Really don’t want to deal with mosquitoes it’s really nice to work in the yard and not have to deal with that so that’s one of the uh one of the other main reasons why I like doing That So in this area I’m just going to tidy it up a little bit and not going to go into great length because my Coral Maple uh Japanese maple over here is still losing its fish isn’t this just beautiful I mean oh my gosh let me take

Let me take you further back so you can see this look at how gorgeous look at how gorgeous that looks and the Fall colors were so beautiful so the one nice thing about hostas when they turn yellow like this is that they’re just very easy to just

Yank out you don’t need your Nippers Necessarily Oh I got a lot of mushrooms here they’re not edible but they’re mushrooms look at this almost look like a almost look like a coral not a coral uh like maybe uh chake mushrooms if you guys know what what these are let me know if you’re a

Mushroom hunter I wouldn’t eat them uh but certainly can identify them and see what they are exactly but I wouldn’t eat them out out of my yard because you know I I have a dog that that pees so I’ll identify that let you know so right now I’m just going to

Finish this little area I’ll give you a walkout and after I rake the the lawn and uh I’ll be done now this is not the right time to be cutting your leg lavender but I’m going to do it anyway and it’s actually blooming crazy weather we’re having it actually Frost last night and

Uh my uh with a a light frost which I was expecting but a couple days from now not last night and uh my uh rra in the front that I planted uh last or this late summer they look like they really got frostbit but looks like they’re perking back up I also got

To finish that so that’s going to be next and then we’ll I’ll give you the walk about [Applause] Okay so let me give you a walk about cuz it’s getting really late you can see I mean you can probably see just from a distance how much better it looks but I’ll give you a walkout really quick and then I’ll take you to the side but at

Least a good portion of my garden is picked up and uh ready for next spring so that’s my main goal so yeah let me let me bring you up real Co This is what it looks like now much much better I mean it’s not perfect cuz it is winter or getting into winter but it looks so much better than it did before I did also cut my uh just barely trimmed it uh this St John’s for

Last night night and then I cleaned up the Claus off of uh my perula here uh cleared out the pots I had some uh basil here so that I cut out pulled out rather and then I just kind of cleaned up a lot of the dried leaves from the Tanga

Claus then over here I just cleaned out all my chuses still need to cut a couple of those flour uh from the hostess and um yeah and just cleaned up my hostes you can’t even see them anymore uh and that’s all I did here I didn’t pull out

That uh um colas but that’s okay another day uh I did want to come back here to just explain a little bit uh these two hostas this is here’s a a blue ivory and then this one is a June hosta those two I left because they are still going into

Dormant I don’t want to disturb that so that’s why I did that as well as this other Blue Angel over here so those I kind of left as far as hostes go but everything else is tagged and cleaned out okay and then uh cleaned out my hosta

Here uh my Blue Angel hosta from here all of my guacamole Eden and plantain over here they’re all plantains by the way it’s just that they have a specific variety and I don’t know the variety of this one uh let’s see and then just picked up

A lot of the leaves and stuff left my red valan alone still looks pretty for now and then I just picked up a lot of the debris cut my hosta out there you didn’t see me do this but this is all of my Bishop delus that I uh transplanted over

Here early in the springtime beautiful flowers but it’s time to say goodbye and then uh all my day lies of course were gone pretty much so they’re they’re cleared out and then over here I didn’t really do anything uh I did take out my doo Delia

From here and right here and then over here I just pretty much picked up all the leaves but the leaves again are falling so kind of hard to keep up with that for now uh and then picked up all the leaves from this little garden here

Area now I still need to clean up this area stay tuned for next week for this one cuz it is dark out so I won’t be doing this plus I can’t do it anyway even if it was light out because I can’t squeeze one little bit into my uh

Recycling can so it’s going to have to wait until that gets emptied out so stay tuned for that I will talk about how these plants weather through the winter months especially when we get uh snow and ice and so yeah we’ll talk about that and uh probably will go over it

Again if that happens but uh uh yeah and if you’re new to my channel and just clicking in thank you for watching don’t forget to hit that uh subscribe button and that notification button so you catch me on all my videos because you guys there’s some exciting things that

Are going on behind the scenes and I can’t wait to show them to you fingers crossed and uh yeah lot of things are are in the works so so um stay tuned for some great news hopefully down the road so say some prayers for some good news

Um but yeah let’s take care of this next time until then love you and I’ll see you guys on the next one thanks for watching bye-bye
