Villa Kuro: Fusion Of Wabi-Sabi And Mid-Century Design In Joshua Tree National Park – Los Angeles

A ranch adobe home built in 1962, some 130 miles outside of Los Angeles
in the California desert provides the starting point of this impressive project

Named Villa Kuro, this residence is not just a living space but a finely crafted work of art, embracing the Japanese philosophy of Wabi Sabi.

Drawing from the Japanese concept of finding beauty in imperfection, the dark exterior design of the house creates a striking contrast with its light and gentle interiors. Wood, ceramics, and woven details are artfully employed to construct a space that feels natural and weathered over time.

“Nothing lasts and nothing is perfect; with age, you find patina and character, a sort of deep beauty that is lost in shiny new objects,” emphasized the studio. “The design concept for Villa Kuro is inspired by Nature and Wabi-Sabi, the Japanese philosophy about finding beauty in imperfection and embracing it.”

A Japanese-style tea room has been added to the living space, serving not only as a tea-drinking spot but also as a meditation retreat. Adorned with a low coffee table and woven floor cushions, sliding glass doors by Mini Inno invite natural light, creating a welcoming atmosphere that beckons guests to linger.

Villa Kuro is more than just a dwelling; it is a vibrant work of art boasting two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a total area of 185 square meters. Embracing a rustic aesthetic, wooden beams traverse the ceilings in the open-plan kitchen and living room. In the kitchen, counters maintain their overall shape with creamy, textured tops and bentwood barstools. The undeniable harmony is accentuated by the mid-century design touches on both the interior decoration and furniture.

“Our goal was to create a serene and unique space; as it is intended to be a vacation home, we want you to feel relaxed right when you walk in.”

The outdoor areas contribute a sense of freedom to the property, including a covered patio with a dining table, a pebbled garden, a courtyard, and a space with lounge chairs, a jacuzzi, and an outdoor shower. Every detail throughout the house is carefully considered, crafting a space that is not just a residence but a living, breathing work of art, where the beauty of nature and imperfection is celebrated and revered.
