easier seed starting and more efficient

This changed my seed starting game completely.
Sandy Bottom Homestead was started to supplement our food supply. By Gardening and raising chickens we have been able to meet that goal and start to surpass it. Follow us as we continue to build out our homestead and become better gardeners.

  1. That's my standard the 3.5 inch pots for tomato's/squash and 2 inch pots of peppers with the trays that hold them. leafy greens, brassicas, and other small plants I still use the 6 packs . Trying to find the balance, 72 cell trays are to small for me , anything bigger then a 3.5 is a chore to transplant and lot of soil by volume.

I am trending towards starting seeds later and using smaller size pots/cell trays. I always start seeds to early and end up with huge transplants i just need to wait and not get so excited an plant pre maturely.

  2. To avoid spills I bought boot mats. They're under 20 bucks and fit my tables really well. I can see how the trays would be better for transport but I have several dozen collapsible boxes from work I got for free and they're really good for multiple tasks. For moving trays and such outside I use a steel mesh cart, keeps everything flat and I can complete other chores with it as well.

I'm in South Jersey and stagger my start indoors during March and April to keep things under control, I don't have the space to start in February because I also overwinter Passion Fruit, peppers, and small citrus. Gotta manage my space. I have a window filled with Orange Hat Tomatoes, they're a micro variety but they're covered with small fruits. The goal is to move to a larger property and build a walipini (or two) so I can go crazy and grow everything I want.

  3. I still use the yogurt/cottage cheese containers as my grow out containers before they are transplanted into the garden or given away to friends and family. I have garden friends save any container that can be reused so when I give the plants away it’s no cost to me.

  4. Last spring I got a couple dozen of the 2" and 4" pot trays and lots of assorted pots and six packs from home depot for free. They had a cart covered in them with a free sign when planting season was winding down. Our local Lowes still has a couple cart loads of this kind of stuff out on the edges of the parking lot.
