  1. Is your Loropetalum one plant that spread over time or a couple of plants grown together as a screen? How far from a 6 FT fence would you plant it?

  2. Jim do you have to deal with voles. They have eaten my of my favorite hostas, weigela and my Japanese grasses. They are eating the roots, how can I protect my plants, anybody else have suggestions?

  3. It would nice to see your thoughts on the highlights from the varioius botanic gardens and arboretums you visit on your trips. Giving special focus to regionally specific plants.

  4. Hi Jim,
Please could you show how to prune Sunshine Ligustrum and Lorapetulum plants?

Also, what is the least expensive way to get more Everillo Carex? I LOVE that plant but my plant “budget” can’t handle buying quart sized containers for as many as I need.

  5. Any thoughts on swamp sunflower? I got it a nursery in Hollysprings this spring. I noticed a lot of suckers in the ground when I was cleaning out all the dead plants.. is this a good plant or is it super invasive? I’m planning on hgettibg rid of it if it is invasive.

  6. For planting aggressive growing plants in containers in the ground, I prefer terracotta. I'm in zone 9B so I don't have to worry about freezes cracking the terracotta & the porous nature of unglazed terracotta mitigates the issues with the soil being too dry or too wet that are common with plastic pots sunk in ground because the terracotta allows moisture to travel through it. I can also leave the rim of the terracotta pots a bit proud to reduce creeping over the edge without having unsightly plastic. I can maintain aggressive plants in a 12-18 inch terracotta pot in ground pretty easily by lifting them & dividing in the fall every year or 2.

  7. Just yesterday I was quoting the info you had given on a woody plant rooted in water vs soil to my neighbor. She made a bouquet of hydrangea from a strawberry sundae hydrangea in her yard, and all the branches started growing roots. We want to see if we can propagate from this. What do you think about potting the stems in loose potting medium, and overwintering in a garage, keeping the potting soil moist? If they live, we’d harden gradually next spring.

  8. I have a Yuletide Camellia (Raleigh area) that's about 10 years old that I dug out and transplanted today. I had to cut all its major roots to get it out of the ground and so now the root ball is about 4-5 big roots that were cut down to about 8 inches. Its lost the vast majority of its root mass. How much of a chance does it have to survive the winter?

  9. I've used dawn dishwashing liquid & water on my clay soil to help my lawn grow in. I saw a video explaining how that mixture breaks down some of the clay so rain can penetrate the grass roots.

  10. On the bulb question honestly the best bulbs I see are the neglected and forgotten daffodils, crocus, and squills. The hell strip as you call it is interesting as I've noticed as you go south they put the sidewalk closer to the street where as you come north minimum is like 5ft and they range up to 30ft in some neighborhoods obvious there's exceptions but overall. I suppose snow is part of the reason

  11. Would absolutely LUV to see you emcee video walk through of gardens as you travel! Your wealth of information is amazing and so helpful!

  12. Hi Jim Thank you so much for the time you spend on the videos.I have learned so much from you. I like the instructional videos you do especially on specific plants.i wish you would do a video on how and where pruning a plant effects how it grows. I know you are in control of the plant growth. For instance top pruning can encourage bottom growth ect.
Also I'm in zone 7B in MS. Overwintering marginal plants in containers. At what temp do you bring those plants into a protected space like a garage?

  13. Have you heard anything from the Plant World, if they are going to create any Disease Resistant Red Tip Photinias? Here in the Deep South. And No I do Not like Cleyeras

  14. When I had our clay tested here in SW VA, I learned it had been limed to 6.8 Native soil is maybe 5.8 tops. It will gradually drop but that reading is after no lime for at least five years. Some of our white pines look sick periodically and occasionally one dies. I read that 7 or higher kills them. I’ve used sulfur in that area, in a blueberry patch, and for our bigleaf hydrangeas.

The tests recommended NO fertilizer too. I do use some HollyTone but am mixing it now with organic pelletized nitrogen. I wonder if I should go to only the nitrogen?

  15. I have a cottage garden with numerous containers in Central Arkansas 8a (no zone change). I mix my own container medium using with old mix, peat, organic plant compost and purchased composted cow manure. I mulch the containers with finely shredded oak leaves. Each container is fertilized when planted or in early Spring and at the beginning of flowering. I use a light hand with organic fertilizer. I'm considering adding either Azomite or Rock Phosphate to my mix to mineralize the container medium. Will my mix benefit from addition minerals?

  16. I want to move my raspberry bushes in the spring. What vegetables can I plant in their previous location. read you cannot plant raspberries where potatoes and tomatoes where. Is the opposite apply?

  17. Question about compost – I am growing vegetables in 100% compost from my own compost pile (in grow bags). After the plants are spent, can I return the compost back from the grow bags to the pile for future use, or should it be discarded? Thanks.

  18. Hey Jim! Open invite to visit us here in Sherrills Ford, NC- northwest region of Lake Norman What a thrill to have you guys come walk around our yard! 😊
I did send some Before and After pics your way.
Love your videos- I’m learning so much!! Also love to have you take us along your travel stops and garden tours.
Have you ever been to the Duke Mansion gardens in Charlotte? Beautiful in the spring!
The azaleas and viburnums are fantastic!!🤗❤😃

  19. Talking about plants and how they behave; some just hang on. I have a few Pineapple Lillies that were transplanted from zone 9b Louisiana to 8b Alabama. I planted them October 2022; it went through the hard, long freeze of December 2022, long hot dry summer of July-September 2023 and it’s still hanging on. I got a few blooms in June, but the plants aren’t looking spectacular. I’m hoping we have a mild winter and the spring will have a stunning plant.

  20. 2 ideas for videos: How to prune conifers (specifically to correct shape). More videos on topiary shaping, especially doing it from scratch.
