  1. SVB? Good luck πŸ€. Stay away from Pepo and Maxima and focus more on Moschata. I'm breeding a landrace sourced from retail Moschata and USDA government collections from Mexico, Egypt, Korea, Africa, etc. but still early in the process here. Also try growing Loke Squash (an improved Lagenaria siceraria β€” Peaceful Heritage Nursery) and other lookalike green squash alternatives, I remember "vining okra" as a common name mentioned around these parts for another alternative to green squash like zucchinis and I believe it's Luffa acutangula so another Luffa used young for food. As they are not true squash they won't smell or look or taste like a squash plant to SVB or squash bugs, the efficacy of this I'll be trialing locally this upcoming spring. Edit: added nursery with seeds.

  2. I love MI gardener as well. Those stripey eggplant are DELICIOUS and easy to sautΓ©e in a pan. I bought them from a farmers market nearby and want to grow them.

  3. Pop shelf has Christmas ornaments for only $1 and that’s cheaper than $1.25 at the actual dollar tree. πŸ˜‚

  4. Have you tried growing balloon flower from seed? I just reseeded them. All my other flowers germinated weeks ago and the pansies have all ready been up potted. Any help please?

  5. Sunflowers : cucumbers = kept bugs away from mine this year. Like the marigold : tomato companion plant trick = zero tomato horn worms.

  6. After having so much failure with big box store seeds, I have learned that getting the RIGHT seed is key. People like Serina and also Lisa Mason zigler tell you what seeds do well in their climates. This is key. And, of course, honing in on the actual seed starting.

  7. The best way to help with squash vine borers is to use insect netting. cover the plants as soon as the first couple of true leaves come up. Keep covered until the female flowers start blooming. You won't completely be clear of vine borers, but it gives your plants a chance to be big and strong and will give you better yields before your plants do succumb to the borer. Love MI Gardener seeds.

  8. Amanda I actually grew some cucumbers in hanging baskets with beans and peas with them. They did very good. I loved the hanging baskets hanging on my deck. They looked beautiful and it was so easy picking the vegetables. Definitely will do again next season. Love the new seed haul. Can’t wait to see them growing next year. Those tomatoes look delicious and I love the shape and color. I grow my vegetables with my flowers. I think it helps both the flowers and vegetables to grow better.

  9. Headed straight to MIgardener while watching your video and placed my order , great prices even when I convert to Canadian 😊
Barely finished cleaning up my gardens and already looking forward to next season πŸ˜‚

  10. Sorry… didn't realize you asked about seed Companies: Prairie Moon Nursery (natives); Etsy (for cheaper smaller quantities… you also sometimes can find there — particularly later in the season– seeds sold out elsewhere, including at these storefronts: SeedGeeks, SouthernSeeds, LittleSeedStoreUS, LittleSeedStore (natives), GrandmaSeedsandGifts, C2CNativePlants, LupineGardens.. a number tilt native…) I also love Harris seed… high germination rates, seeds expensive, excellent quality… Also Swallowtail Seeds for coleus and foxgloves, pinetree, parks which you mentioned, Garden Hoard, Hayefield (small time quirky, Bucks County, PA grower), Hobby Seeds, Earthbeat Seeds (quirky, medicinal and herb seeds… grown and harvested in Vermont…), Experimental Farm Network Cooperative, Pase Seeds, family-owned and operated in New York state… Seedsman, overwhelming number of varieties, Awesome Blossom Plants (Florida based… some interesting varieties…), Johnny Butterflyseed (also Florida based, mainly native seeds)…

    These are just a few…

I like to try to buy some seeds harvested in my state (at 2 tiny vendors not mentioned above) So, why not, in your case, consider buying at least a few packets from Victory Seed (they just relocated their headquarters to Texas…)? It was recently purchased by the person who used to own the site Dave's Garden, e.g., the old garden watchdog site… They live in Texas… Victory moved its operations to Irvington. The company has quite a few micro/dwarf tomatoes… I haven't had much luck in terms of taste with the micros, but I didn't buy mine from Victory… (I attended a conference and the head of Victory Seeds– Dave himself– gave a talk… He was really into the dwarf tomato project…) I live in an exceedingly humid climate so I attempt whenever possible to purchase seeds harvested in the same climate, unless it's something I absolutely can't live without or if some of the places like Earthbeat seem so delightfully quirky…. Aren't there at least 2 big native seed companies based in Texas, e.g., Douglas King Seeds and one other… more aimed at home gardener…

Hints to avoid vine borers in squash: Grow butternuts or tromboncinos for winter squash… both of these winter squash varieties are more resistant to vine borers than other winter squash varieties… The necks of the latter make excellent sweet and sour zucchini pickles.. I plant pumpkins and winter squash later than most — closer to July1 (I live in zone 7a)– and cover them up with a row cover, until they have blossoms on them… have not had problems with vine borers.

Flowers and veggies: Mix cocoa marigolds (orange) with red sage (taller varieties) grow together with peppers… red or green…

Consider adding some natives… maybe a variety of aster to your mums… don't know which ones are native to Texas– maybe fall /aromatic aster? heath aster? (both easy to grow from seed). Some of the natives, the so-called keystones– will add so many more pollinators to your garden they will boost your veggie growing project. (Purple peppers are beautiful, but they turn green once they are heated in a pan!)
