If you have room… this is the easiest way to build a compost bin and get started. The build is just fencing in a circle. Cut and bag grass and leaves and layer them into the bin. The hardest thing about composting is often just getting started.

I started this method after seeing this on your channel last year and this is how I was able to put my raised beds to rest for winter by adding in great leaf mold
Love it❤
I will do this today😊.
It's an awesome idea. Thank you !
I live in an apartment so I have zero yard. But I have found a produce distributor in my town who sells a 55-gallon drum of various types of produce they can't sell for $5 a drum. Plus I posted in a buy nothing group on Facebook asking for leaves and grass clippings… it's abit more work than walking out to your yard…. first year doing this, we'll see how it goes
This is also how I build my compost piles and it works! I also add kitchen scraps, shredded paper, etc. to it. I add to the pile even through the winter months as long as I can keep the core / center warm enough. Happy gardening! 🌷
Gary, is it really necessary to enclose the compost pile with wire mesh fencing? A simple pile is easier to turn. Nothing to fasten or unfasten, and you can get at it from all sides.
i used to drive around town and pick up neighbors bagged leaves 🙂
Good afternoon, Gary. The Geobin supports composting the same way. I have three, and they are much easier to assemble and store than fencing and wire, although that definitely works as well. It's about $35 and it's made in the USA. Can you do a special on the Geobin sometime? I'm not affiliated with them in any way, but I think it's a great product and could help our fellow gardeners.
Note, you do need at least 12 inches of material to get started, or the Geobin will collapse.
Where to start… I don't have a lot of room for composting, but I do what I can. I fill two trash cans with chopped maple leaves, mostly maple, for use as mulch later in the season. I have a 110 gallon bin that I fill with garden cuttings, leaves, and kitchen scraps (peelings, coffee grounds, egg shells). I also have a place where I pile excess leaves, and garden cuttings—on top of a rotted maple stump. I started it to fill in the sunken ground, but can now use it for garden compost. All of my unused raised beds, and grow bags have been topped with a thick layer of leaves, mostly maple with oak and dogwood mixed in. I staked out five locations for planting fruit trees. I ordered a Lapins Cherry, Bing Cherry, Stella Cherry, AU Rosa Plum, and a Yellow Golden Plum. I'm also adding an inground herb garden to my garden next spring.
